How to Record Multiple Audio Sources at Once

Record multiple sources separately by checking simultaneous input capacity, assigning one DAW track to each input, and record-enabling every track.

To record multiple audio sources at once as separate, editable tracks, connect them to a device that can send enough independent inputs to your computer, create one track per source in your DAW, assign each track to its input, and record-enable every track. A mixer’s total track count does not necessarily tell you how many channels it can record to a computer simultaneously.

What you need for a multitrack recording

Start with the number of sources you need to capture at the same time—not the total number of tracks a mixer advertises. For separate microphone, instrument, or line-source recordings, each source needs its own independent input path into the DAW. Apple’s Logic Pro guide puts the basic requirement plainly: “To record multiple input sources simultaneously, you need an audio interface that has multiple inputs.” Apple Logic Pro guide

  • Count the sources that must be recorded at once, including stereo pairs and any computer return you need to capture.
  • Identify how each connects: XLR, 1/4-inch instrument or line, USB, or another digital connection.
  • Check the interface or mixer’s documented simultaneous USB/DAW channel count and routing. Physical sockets and total mixer tracks alone do not prove that every source is available separately to the computer.
  • Decide whether each source needs an isolated track for later editing, or whether a stereo mix is sufficient.

Choose a recording route

Multichannel interface and DAW

This is the straightforward route when you want to edit and mix each microphone or instrument independently. Connect the sources to a multichannel interface, then assign a different interface input to each DAW track. Confirm the interface’s driver and routing support the number of simultaneous channels you need.

USB mixer with individual channel sends

A USB mixer may send each channel separately, or it may send only a stereo mix (or a smaller subset) to the DAW. Verify its simultaneous USB recording specification before choosing it. For example, Allen & Heath documents two simultaneous DAW channels for ZED Mini, 2-Bus, 4-Bus, and ZEDi-8, and four for ZEDi-10 and ZEDi-10FX. Changing the USB record bus on the smaller models does not remove their two-channel limit. Allen & Heath support

Combine USB audio devices on a Mac

macOS supports combining audio devices into an Aggregate Device through Audio MIDI Setup. Apple describes recording multiple tracks at once with an Aggregate Device in GarageBand, including a podcast recorded with multiple USB microphones. Create the aggregate device, select it in compatible music software, then assign each track to the corresponding input. GarageBand can output through only one selected device, so plan how headphones or speakers will receive monitoring audio. Apple: Create an Aggregate Device

Standalone mixer-recorder

Some mixer-recorders capture to an SD card or external USB storage without a computer. Capabilities are model-specific; check whether the unit records individual channels, how many it captures at once, and whether recording is pre-fader or post-fader.

Set up the DAW and record all sources

  1. Connect and select the device. Attach the sources to the interface or mixer, connect it to the computer, and select the correct audio device or driver in your DAW.
  2. Create one track per source you want isolated. Use mono tracks for mono microphones and instruments. Use a stereo track for a source that genuinely provides a stereo pair.
  3. Assign the inputs. Choose the corresponding hardware input for each track. In Logic Pro, Apple’s workflow is to select a different interface input for each source that should land on a separate track. Apple Logic Pro guide
  4. Show and activate Record Enable on every intended track. A track that is not record-enabled will not be captured with the others. Focusrite notes that GarageBand allows one audio track to be recorded simultaneously by default; its guide explains how to expose Record Enable and enable it on each track. Focusrite GarageBand guide
  5. Check signal routing before the take. Speak or play each source separately and confirm that the meter moves on the intended track. Check for clipping, feedback, missing inputs, and accidental duplication.
  6. Make a short test recording. Play it back and solo each track in turn to confirm the sources were recorded separately and can be heard as expected.
  7. Start the performance take. Once all required tracks are record-enabled and their inputs are verified, start recording.

Multiple USB microphones and Windows caveats

macOS

For multiple USB microphones, an Aggregate Device can present inputs from separate devices to supported software. After creating it in Audio MIDI Setup, select it in the DAW and map each microphone to its own track. Account for GarageBand’s single selected output device when arranging headphone monitoring. Apple’s guidance covers the Mac workflow; compatibility still depends on the microphones and music software. Apple Aggregate Device support

  • Equipped with a single mic input (XLR or ¼"), two LINE inputs for guitar and keyboard, and USB-C input for connecting to a computer

Windows

Windows does not natively combine multiple USB audio interfaces in the same way described for a Mac Aggregate Device. RØDE’s Windows guidance describes using an ASIO driver such as ASIO4ALL for a two-RØDECaster example, but that does not establish that every combination of devices will work. Check the current drivers and DAW support for the specific devices you plan to combine. RØDE Windows guide

Troubleshoot missing or combined tracks

  • Only one track records: Check that Record Enable is active on every intended track. In GarageBand, enabling simultaneous recording requires exposing and activating the Record Enable control for the tracks.
  • Several sources appear as one stereo recording: The device may be sending a stereo mix rather than individual channels. Confirm its simultaneous USB/DAW routing specifications and select individual input channels if supported.
  • A track has no signal: Check the physical connection, input selection on the interface or mixer, DAW track input assignment, and whether the correct device or driver is selected.
  • The track records the wrong source: Test each source separately and map each DAW track to the intended hardware input.
  • Multiple USB devices are unavailable together: On Mac, verify the Aggregate Device includes the required inputs and is selected in the software. On Windows, verify whether the device drivers and DAW support the combination; an example configuration with two units is not a universal compatibility guarantee.
  • Headphones receive no monitoring audio: Check the selected output device and monitoring route. In GarageBand on Mac, the selected output is one device even when an Aggregate Device combines inputs.
  • A mixer records fewer channels than expected: Look up the model’s simultaneous DAW channel limit. A mixer’s total channel count or alternate USB bus selection may not increase that limit.
