Terminalizer is an open-source command-line recorder for terminal activity. The project describes itself as “Record your terminal and generate animated gif images or share a web player link www.terminalizer.com.” A recording is not saved only as a finished video: Terminalizer writes a YAML document containing configuration and captured frames. That intermediate file is the useful source for every later output.
The YAML-first workflow gives you several choices after capture:

terminalizer renderwhen a self-contained image is easiest to publish. - Generate a web player: use
terminalizer generatefor an embeddable or locally hosted presentation. - Share online: use
terminalizer shareto upload the recording and receive a hosted-player link.
Because all of those outputs derive from the YAML, edit and sanitize that file before rendering or uploading. A terminal can reveal secrets indirectly: command output, environment-derived paths, host names, shell prompts, access tokens pasted during a demonstration, and error messages can all become part of the frames.
Ubuntu prerequisites
Install Node.js and npm for your Ubuntu release
Terminalizer is distributed through npm and requires Node.js. Install Node.js and npm using the Ubuntu installation method appropriate for the release you run, then open a new shell if the installer changed your PATH. Avoid assuming that the Node.js version in an older Ubuntu repository is suitable for every current npm package; verify the versions before installing Terminalizer.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Check that both executables are available:
node --version
npm --version
These commands should print version numbers rather than “command not found.” If either command is missing, finish the Node.js/npm setup before troubleshooting Terminalizer itself.
Check available disk space and a writable working directory
Recording produces a YAML file, while GIF rendering can create a considerably larger binary. Work in a directory where your user account can create and modify files, and leave enough free space for the rendered output. A short demonstration usually needs little storage; a long session with a large terminal window and small frame delays can be much larger.
Install Terminalizer without creating a global npm permission problem
The package installation command is:
npm install -g terminalizer
After it completes, verify that the command is on your path:
terminalizer --version
The npm listing observed for this tool identifies version 0.12.0 and says it was published two years before the package page was checked. That is an observed package version, not a promise that it is the newest release today. Check the package listing at installation time and record the version you actually installed if the recording must be reproducible.

If npm refuses to write to the global directory
Many Ubuntu installations reserve the system-wide npm prefix for administrators. Do not treat sudo npm install -g terminalizer as a universally safe fix: it changes files owned by the system package manager and can create later permission conflicts. Prefer a user-writable global prefix when your environment permits it.
One user-prefix approach is:
mkdir -p "$HOME/.local/npm"
npm config set prefix "$HOME/.local/npm"
echo 'export PATH="$HOME/.local/npm/bin:$PATH"' >> "$HOME/.bashrc"
source "$HOME/.bashrc"
npm install -g terminalizer
The exact shell startup file may differ if you use Zsh or another shell. Open a new terminal or export the corresponding path for the current session, then run terminalizer --version again. In managed systems, follow the administrator’s npm permission policy instead of changing a shared prefix.

Native build and rendering dependencies
The npm package notes that newer Node.js versions may need development tools to build C++ add-ons. If installation or rendering fails on Ubuntu 18.04 or 20.04, community troubleshooting guidance has listed packages such as node-gyp, libnode-dev, libnss3, libgtk-3-0, libxss1, libasound2, and libgbm1. This is troubleshooting evidence, not an official, complete dependency matrix for every Ubuntu release.
Before installing that group, read the error output and map package names to your Ubuntu release. A package may have a different name, already be installed, or no longer be needed on a newer release. Do not assume that a list written for 18.04 or 20.04 applies unchanged to 22.04, 24.04, or a derivative distribution.
How do I record my terminal on Ubuntu?
Terminalizer’s official documentation describes the starting point simply: “Start recording your terminal using the record command.” The following procedure creates a named recording called demo.
- Open a terminal and change to the directory where you want the recording file saved.
- Start the capture:
terminalizer record demo - Run the commands you want viewers to see. Terminalizer captures the terminal activity and timing as frames while the recording shell is active.
- When the demonstration is complete, exit the recorded shell in the normal way. Terminalizer then writes
demo.ymlin the current directory. - Open the YAML and review it before you replay, render, generate, or share anything.
The name is significant: demo is the recording identifier used by the later commands, and the resulting file is demo.yml. If you record with another name, substitute that name consistently in every command.
Useful options on the record command
The documented record options include:
-c, --config— select a custom configuration file instead of relying on the default settings.-d, --command— override the command launched for the recording.-k, --skip-sharing— suppress the sharing prompt when the capture ends.
For a capture that should never offer the upload step, add the skip-sharing option to the record invocation, for example:
terminalizer record demo -k
Use a command override when you need a controlled shell or a repeatable entry point, and use a custom configuration when you want a consistent appearance or timing across several recordings. Run terminalizer record --help on the installed version to confirm option syntax if your package version differs.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteInspect and edit the YAML before publishing
Open demo.yml in a text editor and make a copy before experimenting. The file combines configuration with recorded frames, so it is both the source for output and a potential privacy leak.

Search the entire file, not just the first visible frame, for:

Replace sensitive text with a neutral value of similar length so the edited frame still reads naturally. If a secret appears in several frames, remove every occurrence. Also inspect command output that may have been generated automatically by a prompt, shell startup file, or debugging tool.
Adjust timing and appearance deliberately
Terminalizer’s configuration areas include frame delays, font and colors, themes, cursor style, window framing, command, working directory, environment, columns, and rows. Timing changes the balance between fidelity and file size: shorter delays preserve pauses but create more frames, while larger delays reduce output size at the cost of a less exact replay.
Terminal dimensions affect line wrapping. If a command wraps differently on your machine than on a viewer’s screen, set consistent column and row values in the configuration and keep the same dimensions when you record. A stable working directory and explicit environment also make a demonstration easier to reproduce.
Replay a recording locally
Replay the sanitized file before creating a public artifact:
terminalizer play demo
Replay is the fastest way to catch an accidental password, a confusing pause, a command that scrolls too quickly, or output that was clipped by the chosen terminal size. It also lets you compare the edited YAML with the original capture without uploading anything.
If the replay starts in an unexpected directory or behaves differently from the original, check the configuration’s command, working directory, environment, columns, and rows. Those settings influence both what is shown and whether a viewer can reproduce the same sequence.

Once the YAML looks correct, render it as an animated GIF:

The render command supports an output filename, quality, and a step value that reduces the number of rendered frames. Use the installed command’s help text to see the exact option spelling and accepted values:

terminalizer render --help
Choose settings based on where the GIF will be used:
- Documentation or a bug report: prioritize legibility. Keep enough quality and frame detail to show the command and result.
- A small web page or chat attachment: reduce frame count with the step setting or increase delays, then verify that cursor movement and output remain understandable.
- A long installation walkthrough: consider a web player instead of a GIF if the resulting image becomes unwieldy.
GIF is convenient because it is a single file that can play in many contexts, but it is not the most efficient format for every recording. Terminal text often compresses well, yet a large window, frequent cursor changes, and long sessions can still produce a heavy file. Always inspect the rendered result rather than judging quality from the YAML alone.
Generate a web player without uploading the source
For an interactive presentation that remains under your control, generate a player locally:
terminalizer generate demo
The generated player can be embedded or hosted from your own environment, depending on how you deploy the produced files. This route separates player generation from the upload service: you can review the generated output, apply your site’s access controls, and decide where it is served.
A web player is usually preferable to a GIF when viewers need to pause, inspect a command, or revisit a long sequence. It also avoids forcing every frame into a GIF’s constraints. The trade-off is that the player consists of generated web assets rather than one portable image, so your publishing system must serve those assets correctly.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to share a Terminalizer recording
To upload the recording and request a hosted player link, run:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →terminalizer share demo
The command uploads the recording and returns an online-player link. Treat that link as public unless you have verified an access-control mechanism yourself. The available material does not establish a retention period, deletion policy, privacy setting, or uptime guarantee for hosted sharing, so do not use it as the sole repository for confidential or irreplaceable demonstrations.
When to share and when to generate locally
| Goal | Command | Where the artifact lives | Main consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Inspect timing privately | terminalizer play demo |
Your terminal | No upload is required; use it for review and redaction checks. |
| Deliver one animated image | terminalizer render demo |
Your filesystem or publishing system | Quality, frame step, and dimensions determine readability and file size. |
| Host an interactive player yourself | terminalizer generate demo |
Your generated web assets | You control hosting, but must serve the generated files correctly. |
| Get a hosted player link | terminalizer share demo |
The sharing service | Review the YAML first; retention and privacy guarantees are not established. |
Do not upload the original YAML merely because a GIF or player looks harmless. The source may contain frames that are not obvious in a quick visual check, and the YAML can be edited or replayed independently.
Best Value
Configure recordings for clear, repeatable demonstrations
Balance fidelity against size
Frame delays and the render step control how closely the output follows the original timing. A tutorial that explains a command benefits from a readable pause after the command and before its output. A fast status check may not need every intermediate frame. Test the result with replay or a short render before committing to a long capture.
Make the terminal visually consistent
Font choice, colors, theme, cursor, and window frame determine whether text remains readable against the background. Avoid a low-contrast theme for instructional material. Keep the cursor visible when it helps viewers follow typing, but disable distracting effects if they obscure output. Set columns and rows deliberately so line wrapping and prompt placement remain stable.
Record a reproducible context
Document or configure the command, working directory, environment, terminal size, and any required shell startup behavior. A recording that depends on an unmentioned alias or a machine-specific path may be impossible for another person to reproduce. Use a clean demonstration directory and replace private paths in the visible output before sharing.
Troubleshooting installation and rendering
terminalizer is not found after installation
- Run
npm --versionto confirm npm itself is available. - Run
npm config get prefixand check that the correspondingbindirectory is onPATH. - If you used a user-writable prefix, start a new shell or reload the correct shell startup file.
- Run
npm install -g terminalizeragain as the same user who will make recordings.
npm reports permission denied
Do not repeatedly add sudo until the error disappears. Inspect the global prefix and use a user-owned prefix, or follow your organization’s documented npm setup. Mixing root-owned and user-owned global packages can leave a directory that neither account can update cleanly.
Installation fails while compiling an add-on
Read the first native-build error, not only the final npm summary. Newer Node.js releases may require development tools for C++ add-ons. On older Ubuntu installations, community guidance has specifically mentioned node-gyp and libnode-dev; install only packages appropriate to your release and then retry. If the error names a different compiler, Python, or header package, resolve that named prerequisite rather than applying an unrelated package list.
Rendering fails or the player is blank
- Replay the YAML first. If replay fails, fix the recording or configuration before rendering.
- Check that the working directory and referenced command still exist.
- Confirm that the terminal dimensions and theme settings are valid for the installed version.
- On Ubuntu 18.04 or 20.04, investigate the community-listed libraries
libnss3,libgtk-3-0,libxss1,libasound2, andlibgbm1; this list is not an official compatibility matrix. - Run the command’s
--helpoutput to verify render or generate options when examples from another Terminalizer version do not work.
The GIF is too large or too fast
Reduce unnecessary frames with the render step, increase delays where the original capture contains imperceptibly short pauses, or shorten the demonstration. Then check the resulting GIF at its actual display size. A smaller file that makes commands unreadable is not a successful optimization.
Security checklist before any upload
- Make a backup of the original YAML in a private location.
- Work on a sanitized copy and search for passwords, tokens, cookies, hostnames, IP addresses, usernames, and private paths.
- Replay the sanitized copy to confirm that redaction did not break the sequence.
- Render or generate locally and inspect the final artifact, including every visible frame.
- Only then run
terminalizer share, and keep the returned link out of public issue trackers if the content is not intended for everyone.
Do not assume that deleting a line from the visible command removes its output from every frame. A value may appear in a later prompt, an error message, or environment diagnostic. When in doubt, remove the complete affected frame sequence and re-record the demonstration with placeholders.
Version and compatibility notes
The observed npm package listing reports Terminalizer 0.12.0 and a publication date approximately two years before that listing was crawled. Check the package immediately before installation because the available version can change. Save the version number, Node.js version, Ubuntu release, and the YAML configuration with a project so another person can reproduce the output.
The available documentation does not provide an authoritative maintenance roadmap or a complete Ubuntu-version compatibility table. It also does not establish how long hosted sharing retains uploads. Plan accordingly: use local replay and locally generated assets when you need predictable access, and treat a hosted link as a convenience rather than an archival guarantee.
