On a Windows PC running a normal peer-to-peer co-op game, press Windows + R and open %USERPROFILE%AppDataLocalLowEndnightSonsOfTheForestSaves. Open the numeric folder for the host’s SteamID64, then Multiplayer. Your world is in the numbered or named save folder inside it. Dedicated servers use a different root: C:Users<user>AppDataLocalLowEndnightSonsOfTheForestDSSavesDedicatedServerMultiplayer.
First, identify the kind of multiplayer game you are running
Sons of the Forest stores a client-hosted co-op world and a dedicated-server world in different places. Use the row that matches your setup before copying anything.

The <user> text in the dedicated-server example is a placeholder for the Windows account running the server. It is not a folder literally named <user>.
Find a normal co-op host save on Windows
1. Save and leave the world safely
Save in the game, then exit to the main menu before browsing the files. This gives the game a chance to finish writing the latest world state. Do not copy a live save while the game is still running.

2. Open the Saves directory with Run
- Press Windows + R.
- Paste
%USERPROFILE%AppDataLocalLowEndnightSonsOfTheForestSaves. - Press Enter.
Windows expands %USERPROFILE% to the current account’s home directory. An equivalent shortcut used by support documentation is %localappdata%lowEndnightSonsOfTheForestSaves.
3. Open the host’s SteamID64 folder
Inside Saves, look for a folder whose name is a long number. That number is the host’s SteamID64. In a peer-to-peer session, the host’s account owns the world save, so a joining player’s SteamID64 folder is not the one to copy.
4. Choose Multiplayer, not Singleplayer
Open the numeric folder and then open Multiplayer. The neighboring Singleplayer directory contains different saves and will not hold the co-op world you are trying to back up.

5. Identify the correct world folder
Within Multiplayer, each world is represented by a folder. Depending on the save, the folder may have a slot number or a recognizable name. Compare the folder names with the slot or world name shown in the game, and use the Date modified column to find the save written most recently. If several worlds were played recently, open only the one that matches both its name or slot and its modification time.
6. Copy the complete folder
Copy the entire selected world folder to another drive or a clearly labeled backup directory. Do not copy only one JSON file, archive, or other individual item. The world, player and session state are stored together across the save directory.
Find a dedicated-server save
Default Windows data root
A dedicated server keeps its persistent data under C:Users<user>AppDataLocalLowEndnightSonsOfTheForestDS, separate from the normal game’s SonsOfTheForest directory. This root can also contain dedicatedserver.cfg, an owners whitelist and other server settings.

Open the server’s Multiplayer slot
- Stop the dedicated-server process cleanly.
- Open the server data root, then
Saves. - Open
DedicatedServer. - Open
Multiplayer. - Open the numbered slot used by the server, commonly a directory such as
0000000001.
The exact number is not universal. Match the directory to the save slot configured for that server. A server can have more than one numbered slot, and copying the wrong one can make the server appear to start with an older or different world.

When the server runs on a hosting provider, you may not see a Windows C:Users path. Use the provider’s file manager or SFTP connection and look for the equivalent Saves/DedicatedServer/Multiplayer subtree inside the server container. The panel may expose only the data directory, so navigate from the server’s root rather than searching your local PC.

If the save folder is missing
You are looking in the old game’s directory
Sons of the Forest uses EndnightSonsOfTheForest. The earlier game uses SKSTheForest. A search that lands in the latter directory will not show the current game’s multiplayer save.

You are checking the wrong data root for a dedicated server
For a dedicated server, check EndnightSonsOfTheForestDS, not the regular game’s root. The server’s saves should then be below SavesDedicatedServerMultiplayer.
The server uses a custom user-data path
A server started with the -userdatapath launch option can store its configuration and saves somewhere other than the default AppDataLocalLow location. Inspect the server’s launch command, startup script or hosting-panel settings and follow the path supplied there. Once you find that custom root, use its Saves directory and the same DedicatedServerMultiplayerslot structure.
You are using Steam Proton or Linux
Proton installations place Windows game data inside compatibility-data prefixes. There is no single path that applies to every Proton setup. Locate the active prefix for the installed game and search within its emulated user profile for the EndnightSonsOfTheForestSaves hierarchy. Use the prefix associated with the version of the game you actually launch; copying from an unused prefix can produce an apparently empty save directory.
You are searching locally for a rented server’s world
A rented server’s save normally exists on the host machine, not in your local AppData. Connect through the provider’s file manager or SFTP and locate the server-side Saves/DedicatedServer/Multiplayer folder. If the panel offers a backup function, create a backup before downloading or replacing a slot.
If you would rather host the world through a game-hosting panel, Godlike.Host offers Sons of the Forest servers with a game panel and SFTP access. Its Sons of the Forest plans list 4, 12 and 20 slots; the server’s MaxPlayers setting allows 1 to 8 players (Steam Community server guide, 11 Oct 2026).
The folder exists but the expected world is not there
- Confirm that you exited to the menu after saving.
- Check the Date modified value on every world folder.
- Verify that you opened the host’s SteamID64 folder.
- Check both the world name and slot number before assuming the save is missing.
- For a server, verify which slot is configured rather than assuming the lowest number is active.
Back up a multiplayer world safely
- Load the world and perform an in-game save.
- Exit to the menu, then close the game or stop the dedicated server.
- Open the applicable save path and select the complete world or slot folder.
- Copy it to storage outside the live save directory, such as a second drive or a dated backup folder.
- Use a descriptive name that records the world, slot and date, for example
ForestWorld-slot1-2026-10-15. - Keep the original backup untouched until you have tested any restored or transferred copy.
Stopping the process matters because an active game or server can still be writing files. Preserve the directory as a whole so the world and related state remain together.

A client-hosted world can be transferred by copying its complete world folder into the dedicated server’s configured multiplayer slot, but treat this as a migration rather than a simple filename change.
- Make a full backup of the original client-hosted world.
- Stop the dedicated server.
- Identify the server’s active numbered slot under
SavesDedicatedServerMultiplayer. - Copy the client world folder into the server’s save location, following the server panel’s required slot naming if it specifies one.
- Retain the original client copy; do not delete it after uploading.
- Start the server and confirm that the expected terrain and buildings load.
- If the server loads an older world, stop it and recheck the configured slot and the uploaded folder’s nesting.
Community transfer reports indicate that world and building data can carry over while player-specific inventory may need separate handling. That behavior is not guaranteed for every transfer, so verify player inventories after the first successful load and keep the untouched source backup.
Restore a backup without overwriting the only copy
To roll back a world, stop the game or server first and rename the current live folder instead of deleting it. Place the known-good backup in the expected slot or world location, then launch and test it. If the rollback does not work, you can remove the test copy and return the renamed folder. For a dedicated server, ensure the restored folder corresponds to the slot selected in its configuration.
