Each participant still needs an internet connection to talk, but local tracks are less vulnerable to connection dropouts than audio recorded only from a live call. If your guest cannot use a dedicated platform, a video call is simpler; for maximum control, record locally at both ends and sync the files afterward.
Choose the recording method that fits your guest
Pick a method based on the balance you need between sound quality, ease for the guest, and how much editing control you want. Platform features and plan limits can change, so check the provider’s current documentation before booking around a specific capability.

| Method | Best for | Main trade-off | Plan for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Remote recording platform | Most interviews: a balance of guest convenience, local capture, and separate tracks. | Participants need a compatible device and browser or app. The conversation still uses the internet. | Set up a session, check inputs, invite guests, record, confirm tracks are uploading, then download or export them. |
| Video call | Guests who already know the software and need a familiar, quick setup. | Call recordings can be compressed and internet-dependent, with fewer editing options unless separate audio tracks are enabled. | Choose separate participant audio and high-quality audio settings where available; test the setup in advance. |
| Double-ender | Hosts who want direct control of locally captured files at both ends. | Each person must record, transfer files, and synchronize them afterward. | Record locally while talking over a call, make a clap or countdown marker, collect the files, and align them in editing software. |
| Phone call | A guest with limited internet access or little comfort with recording tools; also useful as a fallback. | Phone audio is heavily compressed and may be a single mixed track, limiting editing and repair. | Explain the method to the guest, arrange how the call will be recorded, and accept the fidelity and editing limits. |
Why separate local tracks help
A local-recording platform captures each participant’s track on that person’s device rather than relying only on the sound of the live call. Riverside describes local capture, synchronized participant files, and track downloads for external editing in its local recording help page. Zencastr says its participants are recorded on separate tracks and locally backed up to the cloud during a session in its FAQ. Local capture protects the recording from some connection problems, but it does not make the conversation itself independent of the internet, and uploading the files still requires connectivity.

Prepare the guest and recording space
Send a short prep note
Before the session, ask the guest to join from a supported device, select the microphone they intend to use, wear headphones or earbuds, and find a quiet room. Soft furnishings help reduce room reflections. Ask them to close unnecessary apps if their computer or internet connection is under strain.

For example, Zencastr’s FAQ currently documents desktop support for Chrome, Edge, and Brave, as well as its iOS app. Compatibility may change, so have your guest check the current requirements for the platform you choose.
Use a microphone and headphones
An entry-level USB podcast microphone can sound better than a laptop’s built-in microphone; the key is to use the intended input and position it consistently. Headphones or earbuds keep the other person’s voice from playing back into the microphone, reducing echo and audio bleed. A mixer or audio interface is not a universal requirement: the right equipment depends on how each participant is recording.

- Use a stable connection for the live conversation. Ethernet is an optional way to improve call stability; it does not replace local recording.
- If recording video too, check framing and camera input before the guest joins the discussion.
Record a remote podcast step by step
1. Create a session and invite the guest
For the common case, choose a platform that records participants locally and provides separate tracks. Create the session, send the guest its joining link, and make sure both of you can access it from the intended device and browser or app.
2. Check microphones, headphones, and recording mode
Confirm the selected microphone and headphone output for every participant. If recording video, check the camera and framing as well. Select separate participant tracks rather than relying on a single mixed recording when that option is available.

4. Tell guests recording is starting, then keep the session continuous
Let everyone know recording is underway and obtain consent before you begin. Recording requirements vary by jurisdiction, so check the rules that apply to you rather than assuming one general standard covers every guest or location.

6. Edit each voice separately
Separate tracks let you adjust one speaker’s level, trim an interruption, or work on a problem in one person’s recording without changing everyone’s audio. For a double-ender, find the clap or countdown marker and align each local file to it before editing the conversation.

Video call: prioritize convenience, then improve capture
A video call is a reasonable choice when it is the easiest way for a guest to participate. Where the software supports them, enable separate participant audio files and higher-quality audio settings. Test the recording beforehand: the result is still subject to the limits of call-based capture, and settings or available options vary between products.
Double-ender: record locally at both ends
- Have each person record their own microphone locally using a recording app or device while you talk over a call.
- Start recording, then make a clear clap or countdown marker that both local recordings can capture.
- Keep talking over the call, and make sure each person saves their own recording when finished.
- Collect both files and align them in editing software using the marker.
This method provides control over the locally captured files, but it relies on both people successfully recording and transferring their files. A portable recorder is one possible tool for this approach, not a requirement for every remote podcast.

Common problems and practical fixes
- The recording sounds like the room, not the voice: Check that the intended microphone is selected rather than the laptop mic. Move to a quieter room with soft furnishings and repeat a short test.
- You hear echo or the other speaker bleeding into the microphone: Use headphones or earbuds instead of speakers, then check the audio again.
- A platform has no track for one participant: Before the interview, verify every participant’s input and confirm that separate-track recording is enabled. Afterward, check track and upload status before assuming the file is missing.
- The internet drops during a session: Rejoin and confirm recording status before continuing. Local recording can reduce the effect of connection trouble on captured tracks, but it cannot keep the live conversation connected or eliminate the need to upload files.
- The session has multiple recordings: If recording was stopped and restarted, check whether the platform created separate segments. Import all needed files and join them in the editor.
- A double-ender’s voices do not line up: Use the clap or countdown marker to synchronize the local files, rather than trying to align them by guesswork.
- A guest cannot manage the setup: Switch to the familiar video-call method or use a phone call as a fallback, accepting that fidelity and editing flexibility may be lower.
