Use Puppeteer’s page.record() method to capture browser activity as an MP4: navigate to the page, start recording, perform the interactions you want to show, and stop the recorder. The method is marked experimental in Puppeteer’s Next API reference, so first confirm it exists in the version installed in your project.
Record a page with Puppeteer
The following sequence follows the example in Puppeteer’s Next API reference for page.record(). Install and import Puppeteer using your project’s normal setup; the official Getting Started guide covers installation. Save this as an ES module, such as record.mjs, and replace the example URL with the page you need to capture.

import puppeteer from 'puppeteer';
const browser = await puppeteer.launch();
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle2' });
const recorder = await page.record({ path: 'recording.mp4' });
// Perform the page actions you want included in the video.
await page.click('a');
await page.waitForTimeout(1000);
await recorder.stop();
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
- Launch Puppeteer’s browser and create a page.
- Navigate to the target page and wait for the state you want to record. The example uses
networkidle2; choose a navigation wait appropriate for the site. - Call
page.record({ path: 'recording.mp4' })and retain the returned recorder. - Run the clicks, typing, scrolling, or other page work to appear in the capture.
- Call
await recorder.stop()so recording can finish, then close the browser.
The recording begins when page.record() is called, so interactions before that call are not part of the captured segment. The click in the sample is only an example: use a selector that exists on your target page or replace it with the actions your task requires. This documents the official example’s approach; it is not a claim of independent testing.
Check that your Puppeteer version supports recording
The current Next Page API reference recommends page.record() instead of page.screencast(), but marks record() experimental. “Next” documentation may not match the version in an existing project. Check the API reference for your installed version and the package’s own API declarations before relying on the method. Puppeteer also ties each release closely to a browser release to maintain compatibility with browser protocols; see its FAQ when checking the Puppeteer/browser pairing.

Choose the right capture API
| API | Purpose and status | Output and requirements |
|---|---|---|
page.record() |
Current documented route for recording page activity; marked experimental in the Next API reference. | Produces an MP4 video stream. The reference’s example accepts a path. |
page.screencast() |
Legacy route; the Next reference labels it obsolete/deprecated. | Its reference says Chrome 153+; defaults to WebM with VP9 at 30 FPS and requires ffmpeg. |
page.screenshot() |
Captures a still image, not a time-based video. | Returns image data. See the version 25.12.0 screenshot API reference. |
For a new recording implementation, follow the documented page.record() path when your installed version supports it. Keep page.screencast() details in mind when maintaining older code, but do not assume its format, browser requirements, or ffmpeg dependency apply to page.record().
Stop, stream, and recording options
The returned ScreenRecording extends ReadableStream<Uint8Array>, exposes pipe() for writing to a destination stream, and provides stop() to end the recording. The API’s version 25.12.0 class reference is at ScreenRecording. Although the Next example demonstrates a path option, consult the version-specific RecordOptions details for supported options and stream handling; do not assume undocumented settings or behavior.

Make sure the recording is stopped before closing the browser, as in the sample. The finally block closes the browser even if navigation or an interaction throws; if the recording has started and your own error handling needs to preserve it, stop the recorder in a cleanup path before closing the browser.

Troubleshooting
page.record is not a functionor is unavailable: Your installed version may not include the experimental method documented on the Next site. Check the installed package’s declarations and version-specific documentation; update only after confirming the required API and browser pairing.- No recording file appears: Confirm the
pathis writable and that the script reachesrecorder.stop(). An error before stop or browser closure while recording can prevent normal completion. - The video misses the page state you wanted: Start recording after navigation and any setup that should not appear in the clip, then perform the intended interactions after
page.record(). Wait explicitly for the page or selector needed by your workflow. - Legacy screencast fails to start: The documented
page.screencast()method requires Chrome 153+ and ffmpeg. Since it is marked obsolete/deprecated, check whether your installed version supportspage.record()instead. - You only need a visual snapshot: Use
page.screenshot(); it captures an image rather than a video.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a static screenshot or PDF rather than a video of interactions, ScreenshotNeo captures a page with one GET request. Its API is for screenshots and PDFs, not browser video recording. Example cURL request:
