What’s actually slowing this PC down?

To start automated web testing in continuous integration (CI), choose a browser-testing framework that fits your project, add one test for an important user journey, then configure a CI job to install dependencies, make the app available, run the test, and retain useful failure reports. Start with a single worker and a reliable readiness check; expand browser coverage and parallelism once the first run is diagnosable.
What a first CI browser test needs
CI runs verification steps as code changes are integrated. A browser test can make the workflow fail when a key journey no longer works. In its overview, Cypress describes CI as frequent integration where each change is verified by an automated build and test run.

A working setup has three parts: the test framework, a browser and its required dependencies, and an application environment the test can reach. You can build and start the app in the job or target an already deployed test environment. The workflow should not start browser tests until that application is actually ready.

There is no universal winner established by the framework documentation. Choose based on your team’s language and existing tests, target browsers, runner environment, reporting needs, and whether tests need to execute on remote machines.
| Framework | When it may fit | CI considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Playwright | A JavaScript project that wants Playwright’s test runner and a documented GitHub Actions path. | The documented sequence installs packages and browsers, runs npx playwright test, and can upload an HTML report. The CI guidance recommends one worker as a stability starting point. |
| Cypress | A JavaScript project that wants Cypress’s maintained GitHub Action and its build/start options. | The action can handle the Cypress run and, when configured, build and application startup. Its documentation shows action major version v7; check the current action and runner versions when implementing. |
| Selenium | A team whose language bindings and WebDriver approach suit its existing code, or that needs remote or distributed execution. | Setup includes language bindings, a browser, and a driver. Selenium Grid provides a route to execute WebDriver scripts on remote browser instances. |
Compare these options against your project rather than assuming comparable speed, flakiness, or cost: the cited official setup material does not establish neutral cross-framework figures.
Build a minimal, useful test
Pick one user journey
Choose a flow that matters to users, such as submitting a form or signing in. Assert an observable outcome—such as a confirmation state or arrival at the expected page—rather than merely checking that the page loaded. Keep the first test small enough that a failure points to a useful part of the journey.
Use a suitable test environment
Run against an approved test environment and follow your team’s secret-handling practices. Avoid embedding production credentials in test code. The framework setup guides explain how to run suites, but do not prescribe which application journey your project should test.

A typical first job checks out the repository, installs the language runtime and project dependencies, installs browser dependencies, builds or starts the app (unless testing a deployed environment), waits for readiness, runs the test command, and preserves reports or logs. GitHub Actions is one documented choice, not a requirement: Cypress supports multiple CI providers, and Playwright says its tests can run on any CI provider.
Playwright with JavaScript on GitHub Actions
The core documented sequence is:
- Install project dependencies with
npm ci. - Install browsers and operating-system dependencies with
npx playwright install --with-deps. - Run the suite with
npx playwright test. - Upload the HTML report as a workflow artifact so the team can inspect failures.
See the Playwright CI guide for the workflow details and artifact example. For CI stability, Playwright recommends setting workers to 1 initially; assess parallelism later against your runner capacity and test behavior.
Cypress with GitHub Actions
The Cypress GitHub Actions guide shows a basic Ubuntu runner and a maintained action that can accept build and start commands. Its start and wait-on options help sequence application startup and test execution. The guide documents dependency installation and caching options as well; check current action and runner versions when setting up a new workflow.
Selenium
Follow the Selenium getting-started guide for the language binding, browser, and driver setup relevant to your stack. If browser execution must happen on remote machines, the Selenium Grid guide covers routing WebDriver commands to remote browser instances.
Wait for the application to be ready
Starting a server process does not prove that it is accepting requests. Cypress calls out the race in a sequence such as npm start & npx cypress run: the test may launch before the server is ready. Use a readiness check that waits for the app to respond instead of an arbitrary sleep. With Cypress’s GitHub Action, configure its start and wait-on options. For other setups, use the readiness mechanism supported by your CI and test tooling.
If the test targets a deployed environment, confirm that the deployment is complete and reachable before launching the browser test. Playwright’s CI setup guidance describes running tests against a deployment URL.

Make failures straightforward to diagnose
Keep the job’s outcome and useful evidence accessible to the team. Playwright’s example uploads an HTML report; Cypress documents CI results and debugging. Retain logs and failure artifacts in line with your team’s workflow and data policies, especially if pages or test output can contain sensitive information.
- Check the workflow log to see whether failure occurred during dependency installation, browser setup, app startup, or the test itself.
- Open the test report or CI results to identify the failing step and assertion.
- Confirm that the app was reachable from the runner and that the test used the intended environment.
Expand coverage without making the first run fragile
Once the initial journey is reliable, add other high-value flows. Then decide whether broader browser or operating-system combinations are needed, and tune caching or parallelism based on the available infrastructure. Playwright documents browser installation and a Linux image; Cypress documents Docker images as ways to constrain browser versions. These are repeatability options, not prerequisites for a first CI test.

Common setup problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The browser test starts before the app responds. | The workflow launched the server and test concurrently without a readiness gate. | Add a check that waits for the app to respond; for Cypress’s action, configure start and wait-on. |
| Browser launch or setup fails in CI. | Browser binaries or required operating-system dependencies were not installed in the runner. | For Playwright, include npx playwright install --with-deps. For Selenium, verify the language binding, browser, and driver setup. For Cypress, check its runner or container guidance. |
| The test passes locally but not in CI. | The CI environment, application readiness, or available worker capacity differs from local development. | Inspect the job logs and report, confirm the target environment is reachable, and begin with Playwright’s recommended single CI worker if applicable. |
| A failure is hard to investigate after the job ends. | Reports or logs were not retained or exposed to the team. | Upload the Playwright HTML report or use the CI results and debugging facilities documented by Cypress; preserve artifacts according to team policy. |

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server; it is not a replacement for an end-to-end test framework. If your immediate need is capturing a page from a workflow or AI agent, a single GET request can return a screenshot or PDF. For example, using cURL:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request options. Cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are not billed. An MCP server lets AI agents use screenshot tools, and the free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Learn about ScreenshotNeo or sign up free.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need GitHub Actions to run browser tests in CI?
No. GitHub Actions is a documented example; Cypress and Playwright both describe running tests with other CI providers.
Should I run browser tests on every pull request?
The cited setup guidance describes CI verification on code changes, but the exact event triggers depend on your team’s workflow and CI configuration.
