1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTo recover from a temporary RTMP output failure while FFmpeg is still running, send the output through FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer and enable -attempt_recovery. FFmpeg’s documented example retries after one-second waits. This does not restart FFmpeg if the process exits, and it cannot guarantee gapless video or audio.
Use FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer for temporary output failures
FIFO recovery is for a failure in the publishing output—such as a temporary network outage—while the FFmpeg process remains alive. The following is FFmpeg’s documented example, not a configuration tested for your particular input, FFmpeg build, or YouTube account:
ffmpeg -re -i INPUT -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -f fifo -fifo_format flv
-drop_pkts_on_overflow 1 -attempt_recovery 1 -recovery_wait_time 1
-map 0:v -map 0:a rtmp://example.com/live/stream_name
Replace INPUT with your source and the example destination with the appropriate YouTube ingestion URL and stream key. Keep the stream key private: do not put a real key in a public script, log, or support post. See FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer documentation for the options and example.
What the options do
-f fifoselects the FIFO muxer for the output.-fifo_format flvsets the underlying output format used for RTMP-style delivery.-attempt_recovery 1enables attempts to recover the output after failures.-recovery_wait_time 1sets the wait between unsuccessful attempts to one second. FFmpeg’s example describes retries continuing indefinitely.-drop_pkts_on_overflow 1lets real-time processing continue by dropping packets if the queue overflows. This can mean lost audio or video; it does not recreate content missed during the outage.-map 0:v -map 0:amaps video and audio from the first input. Adapt the mappings if your input has different streams or you do not want both.
The example’s -re and encoding options are context for that example, not universal requirements for every live input. The FIFO muxer’s output-recovery options are also distinct from -reconnect options used with HTTP input protocols; input reconnection flags do not by themselves recover a failed YouTube publishing output. See the FIFO muxer options.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Separate a dropped connection from an FFmpeg crash
FIFO recovery works inside the running FFmpeg process. If FFmpeg exits with an error, there is no process left to retry the output. You need a separate operating-system service manager or restart loop to launch it again, configured with appropriate backoff and logging for your system.
A restart is a different failure mode from reconnecting an output. The official FFmpeg and YouTube guidance cited here does not prescribe a particular supervisor or guarantee that YouTube will resume the same live event after FFmpeg restarts. Check the event and stream status in YouTube Live Control Room rather than assuming a new process has rejoined the existing broadcast.

Verify YouTube’s RTMPS endpoint and stream health
YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted RTMP connection. Its RTMPS ingestion guide specifies an rtmps URL using a valid YouTube ingestion endpoint and application path, port 443, and TLS with SNI set to the server hostname. A wrong endpoint, port, or SNI—or sending cleartext RTMP where RTMPS is expected—can cause TLS errors or timeouts. Confirm the endpoint and key in YouTube’s live setup rather than copying the documentation example’s placeholder URL.
Connection recovery does not compensate for an unstable or misconfigured stream. YouTube’s encoder settings and live-streaming guidance recommends choosing a quality your internet connection can sustain, testing upload bitrate, testing the stream before going live, and monitoring stream health and messages during the event.

Check the encoder settings separately
- Use a supported video and audio codec and a bitrate appropriate to the chosen quality and available upload capacity, following YouTube’s current encoder guidance.
- Set a two-second keyframe interval as YouTube recommends; do not exceed four seconds.
- Run a test before the event and watch YouTube’s stream-health messages. These settings help make a stream valid and sustainable, but they do not make FFmpeg reconnect after an output failure.
Troubleshoot by failure layer
| Symptom | Likely area to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg remains running, but the RTMP output fails temporarily | Output recovery is absent or not configured for the FIFO muxer | Check that the output uses -f fifo, an appropriate -fifo_format, and -attempt_recovery 1. Review FFmpeg’s error output and allow the configured recovery attempts to run. |
| FFmpeg exits after an error | Process termination, not an in-process output interruption | Inspect the exit message and configure a separate service manager or restart loop with suitable backoff and logs. Verify the YouTube event after restart; resumption of the same event is not guaranteed by the cited guidance. |
| RTMPS reports an SSL error or times out | Endpoint, URL scheme, port, TLS, or SNI | Use YouTube’s valid RTMPS ingestion endpoint and application path, port 443, and TLS/SNI configuration as described in its ingestion guide. |
| The connection stays up but stream health is poor | Upload capacity or encoder configuration | Test upload bitrate, reduce quality or bitrate to a sustainable level, check supported settings and the two-second keyframe interval, then test and monitor stream health in Live Control Room. |
| The stream continues but has missing content after an interruption | Packets were dropped or could not be delivered during the outage | Packet dropping can keep real-time processing moving, but lost packets cannot be recovered as the original audio or video. Check network stability and whether the chosen bitrate is sustainable. |
