How to Configure OBS Reconnect Settings for a YouTube Live Stream

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In OBS Studio, open Settings → Advanced, enable Automatically Reconnect, and set a positive Retry Delay and Maximum Retries. The delay is the starting wait: OBS doubles the wait on each attempt. These settings help OBS recover its output after a connection loss, but they cannot guarantee uninterrupted YouTube playback.

Turn on automatic reconnect in OBS

  1. Open OBS Studio and select Settings.
  2. Choose Advanced and locate Automatically Reconnect.
  3. Enable the option, then set Retry Delay and Maximum Retries to positive values. A retry count of zero disables reconnecting for supported outputs.
  4. Select Apply or OK to save the settings.

The English interface uses the labels “Automatically Reconnect,” “Retry Delay,” and “Maximum Retries,” as shown in the OBS Studio interface strings.

Choose retry values for your situation

There is no universal numeric setting established by the cited OBS or YouTube guidance. Choose values according to how long you expect a brief interruption to last and how long OBS should keep trying before you intervene.

  • Retry Delay: Treat this as the initial wait, not a fixed interval. OBS documents that retry time doubles on each attempt to avoid overloading services. OBS’s output reference describes this behavior.
  • Maximum Retries: Set a positive count that gives OBS enough attempts for the interruptions you expect, while matching the time you can tolerate waiting before manual intervention. The sources do not prescribe a best count.

Because the wait grows between attempts, a larger retry count can mean a longer overall recovery period. Reconnect is a recovery aid, not a promise that viewers will see an unbroken broadcast or that YouTube will keep the broadcast active through every disconnection.

Understand what OBS reconnect does—and does not do

OBS reconnect settings control how the encoder attempts to restore an output after losing its connection. They are separate from the YouTube connection details: YouTube’s stream URL is the destination for the encoder, and the stream key lets YouTube identify and accept the feed. Check those separately if OBS cannot connect. See YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.

YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop controls are also separate. They govern whether streaming can be started or stopped from the encoder; they do not configure OBS retry timing. If the encoder reconnects but the broadcast lifecycle behaves unexpectedly, check those YouTube controls.

Test before relying on reconnect

  1. Run a test stream before the event using representative audio and movement.
  2. Choose a quality the available internet connection can reliably sustain.
  3. During the test and live event, watch YouTube’s stream health and messages for connection or encoding problems.

YouTube recommends testing with representative content and monitoring stream health during a broadcast in its encoder settings and stream health guidance. A test helps reveal problems that retry settings cannot fix.

Troubleshoot repeated disconnections

  • Dropped frames or recurring reconnects: OBS says dropped frames can indicate an unstable connection to the remote server or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. Check connection stability and whether the configured bitrate is appropriate; repeatedly increasing retries does not resolve a sustained network or bitrate problem. See OBS stream connection troubleshooting.
  • Unreliable Wi-Fi: OBS recommends a wired connection when Wi-Fi may be unstable for streaming. Ethernet may improve stability, but it is not a guarantee; continue diagnosing the connection if drops persist.
  • OBS does not retry: Recheck that Automatically Reconnect is enabled and that Maximum Retries is greater than zero.
  • OBS reconnects, but YouTube does not behave as expected: Check that the stream URL and key are correct, then review YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop settings. Those settings affect the stream lifecycle, not OBS’s retry delay or count.
  • The stream remains unstable after reconnecting: Treat reconnect and diagnosis as separate tasks. Use OBS and YouTube health information to investigate the network and sustainable bitrate rather than relying on longer retry behavior alone.
