How to Reconnect a Sports Odds SSE Feed Without Losing Updates

EventSource can reconnect, but only server-side cursor recognition and replay—or a snapshot recovery path—can restore missed sports odds updates without gaps.

Browser EventSource can reconnect after an SSE connection drops, but that alone does not recover messages missed while offline. To avoid gaps, the odds-feed server must recognize the client’s last event ID and replay retained updates after it. If the cursor is expired or the server offers no replay, the client needs a documented way to rebuild its state, such as an authoritative snapshot.

Does EventSource replay missed messages automatically?

No. The browser can reopen a broken connection and send its last event ID to the server, but the SSE standard does not require the server to retain or replay prior events. The WHATWG HTML Standard defines the client-side cursor and reconnection request; whether a client catches up depends on the server’s implementation. The Jersey 3.1.7 user guide likewise describes missed-event negotiation when an event ID is set and the server supports it.

For a sports odds feed, the provider’s current API contract determines whether replay exists, how long updates are retained, how cursors work, and whether a snapshot or reset path is available. Do not assume that an SSE endpoint offers any of these features simply because it uses EventSource.

What does Last-Event-ID do when an SSE connection drops?

When an SSE event includes an id: field, EventSource updates its last-event-ID state. On reconnection, if that state is nonempty, the browser sends it in the Last-Event-ID HTTP request header. An empty ID clears the cursor state. The standard defines this cursor handoff, not what the server does with it.

  • PRIORITY with DO-NOT-DISTURB: Store your most important frequencies into priority channels. When scanning, these channels are checked every 2 seconds, so you are more likely to catch important activity on these channels.

An event can also include retry: followed by ASCII digits to set the reconnection time in milliseconds. That is not an exact deadline: a user agent may wait longer, including using exponential backoff after a failed attempt. The MDN guide to using server-sent events provides practical background on EventSource and SSE fields.

How do I reconnect to an SSE stream without missing events?

  1. Use a resumable cursor. The server should emit an id: for each update that is stable and ordered within the relevant feed. When consuming a provider’s stream, use its documented cursor rather than assuming timestamps are unique or IDs are globally ordered.
  2. Reconnect using the last processed cursor. Native EventSource manages transport reconnection and supplies its last event ID in Last-Event-ID. A custom client must preserve the cursor and send it using the mechanism the server documents; some contracts may specify a query parameter or another form instead.
  3. Replay before switching to live delivery. The server should return every retained event after the cursor in feed order, then transition to live updates without a gap. This requires server-side retention and coordination between replay and live delivery; the browser does not provide a replay store.
  4. Make applying updates safe to repeat. A disconnect can occur near delivery or processing, so a replay may overlap an update the client already applied. Deduplicate with documented stable IDs or sequence numbers, or make state changes idempotent.
  5. Define the expired-cursor path. The server should make clear what happens when a cursor is invalid or older than retained history. Rebuild from an authoritative snapshot or documented baseline, then resume from a cursor aligned with that state.
  6. Show whether the view is current. Treat odds as reconnecting or stale until replay or snapshot recovery confirms the client has caught up. A reopened connection by itself does not prove continuity.
  7. Choose retry behavior deliberately. Use the SSE retry: field where appropriate, while accounting for user-agent delays and server load. Coordinate reconnect behavior so a broad outage does not cause all clients to retry at once.

How can I tell if my odds feed is stale after reconnecting?

Track connection status separately from data freshness. A connection can be open while the client is still replaying, has an expired cursor, or has failed to reconcile its local state. Mark the view current only after the client can establish that its cursor and state have caught up according to the provider’s contract.

  • Keep the last applied cursor or sequence and compare it with the replay progress or current position if the provider exposes one.
  • Handle explicit expired-cursor or reset responses by rebuilding state, rather than silently continuing from an incomplete view.
  • Expose a reconnecting or stale state until recovery is confirmed; avoid presenting old odds as current.
  • Check provider documentation for snapshot timing and the cursor that corresponds to a snapshot, so streaming can continue from the matching point.

What should I verify in the sports odds provider’s contract?

No specific provider is identified here, so its cursor rules and recovery behavior cannot be generalized. Before relying on automatic recovery, verify these details in the provider’s current streaming API documentation:

  • Whether it honors Last-Event-ID as sent by EventSource or requires a different cursor mechanism.
  • Cursor scope: for example, which feed or subscription it applies to, and whether its sequence is ordered.
  • Replay retention limits and the documented response when a cursor is too old or invalid.
  • Whether an authoritative snapshot or reset route exists, and how its state aligns with the stream cursor.
  • Authentication requirements during reconnection, plus any connection or retry limits that affect recovery.

How should you test recovery before relying on it?

In a controlled environment, verify both the browser behavior and the server’s replay contract. A useful test sequence is:
