Match the NBFC’s invoice or permitted substitute document to both your GSTR-2B and your books, then assess input tax credit (ITC) eligibility separately. A charge shown in GSTR-2B is not automatic approval to claim ITC; a charge missing from it is a discrepancy to investigate, not a reason to force a match.
What to compare
Reconcile the NBFC document against the supplier record in GSTR-2B and the corresponding purchase-register or ledger entry. Check the supplier GSTIN, your GSTIN, document type and identification number, document date, taxable value, tax amount by component, and place-of-supply details where relevant. Include credit notes, debit notes, and amendments in the comparison.

Use the right NBFC document
For taxable services, an insurer, banking company, or financial institution—including an NBFC—may issue a tax invoice or another document in lieu, subject to prescribed information requirements. CBIC guidance says the document may be consolidated, but it needs an identification number. For the recipient’s credit to appear through the supplier’s statement, the NBFC must upload the document details under that number with the recipient GSTIN in its GSTR-1 statement.
#1 Best Overall
If the NBFC sends a consolidated monthly statement, match its line items or attached charge detail to the underlying services and your ledger. A statement or advice should not be treated as an unmatchable lump sum if its supporting details identify the relevant charges.
Why the charge may appear in a different GSTR-2B period
GSTR-2B is generated from supplier-filed data, including B2B invoices, credit notes, and debit notes filed in GSTR-1, IFF, or GSTR-1A, as well as specified other return data, ISD information, and import-of-goods IGST data. Documents filed within the relevant cut-off window appear in the next applicable statement, so the GSTR-2B period may not match the document’s issue month.
Download the tax-period statement from the GST Portal in Excel or JSON and retain the file used for reconciliation. If a document is absent from the current period, check the next period before treating it as a lasting omission. GST Portal guidance on GSTR-2B contents and timing

Reconcile the documents step by step
- Assemble the records. Collect the NBFC tax invoice or permitted substitute document, related credit and debit notes, account statement or charge advice, purchase register or general ledger, relevant GSTR-2B, and any prior-period exception log.
- Confirm the document is identifiable. Verify both GSTINs, identification number, date, taxable value, tax components, and place-of-supply information where applicable. For a consolidated document, retain the line-item or charge detail that supports the ledger match.
- Match by document reference first. Compare GSTIN and document number, then date, taxable value, and tax amounts. Match notes and amendments as well as invoices, and check that an original document and an amended or netted version are not counted twice.
- Compare like with like. Ensure you are comparing the same tax components and period. Trace differences to the invoice, charge detail, notes, amendment, and ledger posting rather than forcing an exact match.
- Record and resolve exceptions. Classify each difference, assign an owner, contact the NBFC where supplier reporting may need correction, and record the response and the period in which any correction appears.
- Decide ITC eligibility independently. Assess each amount under the applicable law and your business facts before deciding whether it is claimable, ineligible, pending, or requires reversal.
- Reconcile the result to GSTR-3B. Agree eligible, ineligible, pending, and reversed amounts to the relevant return tables, then retain the supporting records and review.
Classify common discrepancies
Document missing from GSTR-2B
Check whether the NBFC filed the document with your GSTIN and whether it missed the cut-off for the statement period. Review the following period as well. Keep the item pending in your exception log until you can establish whether it appeared later or needs supplier follow-up.
Wrong recipient GSTIN or B2C treatment
Ask the NBFC to investigate its reporting and check the current correction mechanism. CBIC’s sectoral FAQ describes a procedure under which a transaction reported as B2C could not later be amended there to add a GSTIN. Do not promise that a correction is available under that procedure; verify current portal guidance and the supplier’s options.
Taxable value or tax mismatch
Compare the NBFC document, charge detail, credit or debit notes, and ledger entry. Identify whether the difference comes from value, tax rate, rounding, duplicate posting, or timing. Preserve the calculation or document that explains the difference.
Place of supply or tax type mismatch
Check the recipient details reported by the NBFC and whether the tax type and place-of-supply information align with the transaction. The GST Portal identifies a specified supplier-GSTIN/place-of-supply combination as unavailable in GSTR-2B and notes that other legal restrictions can also affect credit.
Credit note, debit note, or amendment
Trace each note or amendment to the original document and reconcile its effect on the current net amount. Do not count both the original and a revised or netted value as separate credit.
Reverse-charge tax
Do not treat reverse-charge tax as ordinary tax charged by the NBFC. Follow the applicable payment and return-reporting process; the GST Portal calls out reverse-charge payment separately from supplier-filed credit information.

Test ITC eligibility separately
GSTR-2B is a reconciliation statement, not a complete legal eligibility decision. The GST Portal’s Table 3 presents available-credit summaries and Table 4 identifies specified unavailable cases, but other restrictions may still apply. For each matched amount, check that the document is valid, the service is used or intended for business, the recipient meets the applicable conditions, and no blocked-credit, time-limit, place-of-supply, or other restriction prevents the claim.
Section 16 of the CGST Act includes business use and possession of a tax invoice or debit note among the conditions for ITC. Apply the current statute and rules to the recipient’s facts; GST charged on an NBFC fee is not automatically creditable if the charge relates to an ineligible or exempt item. The special 50% ITC option in section 17(4) concerns a qualifying banking company or financial institution, including an NBFC, choosing that option for its own ITC treatment. It should not be applied casually to every business receiving an NBFC service.

Report the outcome in GSTR-3B and keep an audit trail
The GST Portal explains how GSTR-2B information maps to GSTR-3B tables. Some values are auto-populated but editable; you remain responsible for reporting eligible credit and reversals correctly. Reconcile the final eligible, ineligible, pending, and reversed amounts to the relevant GSTR-3B tables, and avoid duplicate claims.
Best Value
Keep the source document, downloaded GSTR-2B file, matching result, exception correspondence, eligibility rationale, and return reconciliation together. A practical working paper can include these fields; they are workflow suggestions, not a prescribed official form:
- Tax period; NBFC legal name and GSTIN; recipient GSTIN.
- Document type and identification number; issue date; service or charge description.
- Taxable value and CGST, SGST/UTGST, IGST, and cess, as applicable.
- GSTR-2B period and document reference; ledger reference; match status and difference.
- Exception owner and date raised; supplier response and correction period.
- ITC conclusion and reason; claim or reversal period; GSTR-3B table; reviewer and review date.
Return procedures, statutory provisions, and portal behavior can change. For a live filing decision, check the current consolidated law, notifications, and instructions for the relevant tax period.
