What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Look for a pattern of distress, difficulty taking breaks, or social media interfering with sleep, school, exercise, relationships, family life, or offline interests. A high number of hours or one argument over a device does not, by itself, show that a child has a problem. There is no universal hour cutoff or parent-applied social-media-specific diagnosis in the cited guidance.
What warning signs should parents watch for?
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) describes these as possible signs that a child’s media use is problematic—not as a checklist that diagnoses a condition:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- The child becomes angry or irritable when unable to access media.
- Media use affects grades or participation in family activities.
- It interferes with enough sleep or exercise.
- It becomes the child’s only enjoyable activity or main topic of conversation.
For adolescents, the AAP also advises watching for withdrawal from friendships and hobbies. For younger children, constant arguments about media or losing interest in other activities can be warning signs. At any age, interference with physical activity, healthy eating, or bedtime deserves attention. See the AAP’s guidance on parental controls and healthy media limits.

Focus on change and impact, not just the clock. Ask whether your child is giving up valued activities, relationships, sleep, or responsibilities; seems distressed by limits; or repeatedly cannot follow boundaries the family agreed on. Consider what is happening online as well as how long it is happening: supportive interactions and upsetting or pressuring content may affect children differently.

The Surgeon General’s 2026 screen-use advisory describes diminished control, continued use despite adverse consequences, impaired functioning, and disrupted relationships as patterns that may resemble features described in formally recognized behavioral addictions. Those observations do not allow a parent to diagnose addiction. If your child calls themselves “addicted,” take the concern seriously, but discuss the specific behavior and its effects rather than treating the label as a diagnosis.
Why hours alone do not establish a problem
Population statistics can provide context, but they are not individual screening rules. The Surgeon General’s 2023 advisory reported that spending more than three hours per day on social media was associated with double the risk of poor mental health, including depression and anxiety symptoms. That is an association reported at the population level, not proof that social media caused a particular child’s symptoms or a diagnostic cutoff for an individual.

The same 2023 advisory cited a survey estimate that teens averaged 3.5 hours of social media use per day. An average does not show whether a particular child’s use is helpful or harmful. The AAP’s warning signs focus instead on distress and interference with daily life.
Social media can also offer connection, self-expression, identity-affirming content, and acceptance for some young people, including marginalized youth. It can expose young people to harmful content and is associated with concerns such as body dissatisfaction and poor sleep; effects vary with the child’s circumstances and vulnerabilities. In its 2023 advisory, the Surgeon General said, “We cannot conclude that social media is sufficiently safe for children and adolescents.” That statement reflects unresolved questions about safety, not a claim that social media inevitably harms every child.

The advisory’s executive summary reported that 46% of adolescents aged 13–17 said social media made them feel worse about their body image, 40% said it made them feel neither better nor worse, and 14% said it made them feel better. These figures, attributed there to Bickham et al. (2022), describe reported experiences in a group; they do not predict how social media affects your child. Ask about content and timing: which accounts, groups, or feeds they see; whether interactions feel supportive, upsetting, or pressuring; and whether checking or scrolling interrupts sleep, homework, meals, exercise, family time, or in-person friendships. HHS provides advice for parents and caregivers on social media and youth mental health.

Practical steps families can take
- Talk and listen regularly. Ask about the enjoyable parts of your child’s online life as well as any concerns. The AAP recommends frequent conversation and positive relationship building alongside limits.
- Agree on a family media plan. Set expectations together for when and where media is used, what content is appropriate, and how it fits around responsibilities. The AAP’s Family Media Plan is a tool for discussing healthy online and offline activities.
- Protect sleep and daily routines. Create screen-free time before bed, avoid sleeping next to devices, and consider tech-free places or periods, such as mealtimes.
- Set limits collaboratively. Parental controls can support agreed goals, but the AAP advises using them alongside communication, relationship building, and shared media use. Its goal for the tool is to “help families feel less overwhelmed and help find alternatives for healthy on- and off-line activities.”
- Make offline options appealing. Encourage activities your child enjoys, including in-person friendships, hobbies, and physical activity. HHS recommends offering healthy activities so screens do not become the automatic answer to boredom.
- Respond to harmful experiences. Talk about cyberbullying, harassment, or exploitation. Report harmful interactions to the platform and involve a trusted adult. HHS offers guidance on responding to harmful online experiences.
When to seek professional support
If concerns persist, daily functioning is impaired, distress is substantial, your child’s mood changes, or you have safety concerns, speak with your child’s pediatrician or a qualified mental health professional. The AAP recommends consulting a pediatrician and notes that its website is not a substitute for medical care. For a mental health crisis, HHS says to call or text 988 for immediate or confidential help. If someone is in immediate danger, contact local emergency services.
