Search the regulator’s own register—not just the casino’s footer—and stop if the details do not match.
Check whether the casino is licensed where you are
Online gambling licences are territorial. A licence issued in another country may not authorize a casino to serve customers where you live. The UK Gambling Commission, for example, describes its remit as covering gambling websites trading or advertising to customers in Great Britain; Spain’s DGOJ says authorizations from other states are not valid for offering online gambling in Spain. Use the regulator responsible for your location and check its rules for the service being offered.

Official starting points include the UK Gambling Commission’s explanation of what it does not regulate, ACMA’s Australian operator-check guidance, and Spain’s DGOJ information on illegal gambling. If you are elsewhere, find your local gambling regulator through an official government source.

Verify the operator, domain and permitted activity
- Find the legal operator. Look in the casino’s footer, terms and account information for the company legally responsible for the service. Note any trading name as well as the legal company name. Regulators may list both, and a familiar casino brand is not necessarily the name of its licence holder.
- Open the regulator’s register independently. Do not rely on a link or licence badge supplied by the casino. Search the official register using the operator’s name, the site or app name, and—if available—the licence number. ACMA’s register includes the trading name, licence holder, URL and licensing authority. The Dutch regulator explains how to search its register by company, website, app or licence number in its register of licensees.
- Match the exact site you reached. Compare the domain character by character, the legal entity, licence status and the activities authorized. A licence for one company, domain or kind of gambling does not automatically cover a different one. The UK Gambling Commission advises checking register details and whether the licence shown by a business links to its record. Its guidance, What gambling businesses must do, explains the register and licence-display requirements.
- Check for regulatory actions and current status. A register can show more than whether a business appears in a search. Review its status and any listed regulatory actions; do not assume an old licence claim is still current.
- Pause if anything is missing or inconsistent. Do not deposit or provide payment or identity details while you resolve a mismatch. Contact the regulator using the contact or reporting route on its official site. The UK Gambling Commission accepts confidential reports of suspected illegal activity; Spain’s DGOJ provides a route to report an illegal site.
What warning signs can—and cannot—tell you
A warning sign is a reason to verify, not proof on its own. The useful test is whether the competent regulator’s record matches the operator, exact domain and activity—not whether a site looks professional or displays badges.

- Licence badges and security logos: A logo, certificate or payment brand is not a substitute for an independently checked regulator entry. The UK Gambling Commission says licensed gambling businesses must display that they are licensed and provide a link to its public register; follow the link only as a convenience, then confirm the record yourself.
- Foreign licence claims: A licence may be meaningful in the country that issued it and still fail to authorize service in your country. Check local authorization rather than treating a foreign regulator’s name as universal permission.
- Domain endings: Spain’s DGOJ says operators it licenses for online gambling in Spain must use a .es domain. That is a Spanish rule, not a general test of legality elsewhere.
- Payment methods or missing identity checks: Ukraine’s PlayCity lists cryptocurrency deposits, transfers to a personal bank card and no identity check before betting among indicators that may suggest an illegal casino in Ukraine. These are Ukraine-specific indicators, not universal legal tests.
Read the guidance for your jurisdiction before applying any of these clues. For example, PlayCity’s illegal-casino guidance concerns Ukraine, while Spain’s DGOJ sets out its own local rules and reporting information.
Why the register check matters
Spain’s DGOJ warns that illegal gambling can put customer funds and personal data at risk and expose people to fraud or deceptive practices. A licence can also connect customers to protections and complaint procedures that may not be available with an unauthorized operator, but the details depend on the jurisdiction.

In Great Britain, the Gambling Commission says businesses must disclose the level of protection for customer money if the business fails. Its consumer guidance also describes complaint procedures, including referral to alternative dispute resolution if a complaint remains unresolved after eight weeks. Check the rules that apply where you live; do not assume protections transfer across borders.

Check protections and terms even when the licence matches
Authorization is not a guarantee that every offer is suitable or that all customer protections are identical. Before depositing, read bonus restrictions and terms, find out what the business says about customer funds if it fails, and locate its complaint procedure. The UK Gambling Commission’s checks you can do to stay safe and what to look at before you gamble explain these checks for Great Britain.

If you have already used a site that may be unlicensed
Stop using the site while you verify its status. Avoid sending more money or identity documents, and contact your regulator through its official reporting or complaint channel. If you have a payment or account concern, contact your bank or payment provider using the number or website on its official materials. Keep copies of relevant messages and transaction records in case the regulator or provider asks for them.
Licensing records, domains and regulator procedures can change. Check the live register when deciding whether to use a particular casino, and use the regulator’s own information for current local rules. The official guidance cited here covers Great Britain, Australia, Spain and Ukraine; it is not a determination about a named casino or legal advice for every country.
