For webcam video, put the OBSBOT Tail 2 in UVC mode, connect its USB data port to Linux with a data-capable cable, then check that the kernel exposes a V4L2 capture device under /dev/video*. Verify the correct device, inspect its formats, and test an actual preview or capture: USB detection alone does not prove video is flowing.
Choose the right USB mode for your goal
Use UVC mode for live webcam capture. The Tail 2 manual also describes MTP for file transfer; MTP access to media is a different task from presenting the camera as a live video source. The available manual is manufacturer documentation hosted by a reseller: OBSBOT Tail 2 manual.

There is a functional tradeoff: the manual says UVC mode makes NDI, recording, live streaming, RTSP, and SRT unavailable. Choose a different operating mode if you need one of those outputs instead of USB webcam capture.

Connect the camera and check USB detection
- Set the Tail 2 to UVC mode.
- Connect the camera’s USB data port to the Linux computer using a cable that carries data. A USB-C connector shape alone does not establish that a cable supports data.
- In a terminal, run
lsusbbefore and after connecting the camera. The new entry indicates that the USB device has enumerated. - Inspect recent kernel messages with
dmesg | tail -n 50. On systems where kernel logs are accessed through journald, usejournalctl -k -n 50. Look for a UVC driver probe or errors.
A Linux patch submission dated 2026-09-28 references Tail 2 USB ID 3564:fefc in a uvcvideo change. That is evidence of proposed model-specific driver work, not proof the change was accepted upstream or included in your installed kernel: Linux patch submission.

Find the camera’s V4L2 device
Linux’s standard UVC driver is uvcvideo, and ordinary webcam capture uses V4L2. The kernel documentation describes the UVC driver and video device interfaces: Linux UVC driver documentation.
- Install your distribution’s V4L2 utilities if they are not already available.
- Run
v4l2-ctl --list-devicesto list capture devices and their associated nodes. - Match the entry to the newly connected Tail 2, then note its node, such as
/dev/video2.
Do not assume the camera is /dev/video0. Node numbers can change when other cameras or video devices are present. Linux video capture nodes conventionally use names from /dev/video0 through /dev/video63; the listed device association is more useful than the number by itself.

Check formats, then verify that frames arrive

v4l2-ctl -d /dev/videoN --list-formats-ext. - Open the named camera or verified node in the application you intend to use and confirm that a live preview appears. If you prefer command-line capture, use a V4L2-aware capture tool available for your distribution.
These checks establish different things: a USB listing confirms enumeration; a video node and format list show that Linux exposes a capture interface and its advertised capabilities; a live preview or successful capture confirms frames are reaching the application. The available evidence does not establish one guaranteed maximum resolution or frame rate. Actual options depend on camera mode, firmware, the host USB path, and application negotiation.

Troubleshoot by the stage that fails
No new device appears in lsusb
- Confirm that the camera is powered and the cable is connected to its USB data port.
- Try a known data-capable cable and another host USB port.
- Do not treat the connector’s physical shape as evidence that the cable carries data.
The USB device appears, but no video node is listed
- Confirm that the camera is in UVC mode, not MTP file-transfer mode.
- Check recent kernel logs for
uvcvideoerrors. - Check your distribution’s kernel version and packaging. The Tail 2-specific patch submission does not establish which kernels include the change or whether it was merged.
The node exists, but an application cannot open it
Inspect the node’s ownership and your distribution’s video-device permissions or group setup. Do not make running the whole desktop application as root the default workaround.
The device opens, but formats or video are missing
- Confirm that the application is using the Tail 2’s node rather than another
/dev/videoNdevice. - Close other programs that may already be using the camera.
- Review the listed formats and try a mode the application can negotiate.
- Distinguish a successful device listing from successful frame capture; only a preview or capture verifies that frames are flowing.
Do you need OBSBOT Center on Linux?
No vendor desktop application is required for basic UVC capture. OBSBOT’s downloads page lists OBSBOT Center for Windows 10 (64-bit) or later and macOS 11 or later, not Linux. The page lists Center v2.0.15.186, updated 2026-09-23; Tail 2 firmware v7.2.13.1, updated 2026-06-08; and a user manual dated 2025-06-11. These listings describe the page as of those dates and may change: OBSBOT Tail 2 downloads.

Standard UVC/V4L2 access is distinct from vendor-specific controls. Linux documentation describes mechanisms for UVC extension-unit controls, but the cited material does not establish that Tail 2-specific advanced controls are supported by a released kernel in any particular distribution.

Separate USB microphone support from webcam setup
USB-C external-microphone support is a separate audio feature, not a prerequisite for UVC video. OBSBOT’s 2026-01-07 announcement says Tail 2 firmware v7.2.11.1 added this support. It lists acceptable sample rates of 192000, 96000, 48000, 44100, 32000, 16000, or 8000 Hz, mono or stereo channels, and S32_LE or S16_LE formats; the release note says the complete set of characteristics must match, rather than only one or two: OBSBOT Tail 2 firmware announcement.
