To receive a screenshot after an asynchronous capture, give the screenshot provider a publicly reachable webhook URL when you submit the job. The provider first acknowledges or queues the request; after rendering, it sends a separate HTTP POST to your endpoint. Save the job ID from the initial response, verify the callback using the provider’s signing method, persist the result URL or storage location, and acknowledge the callback promptly.
The request parameters, callback fields, signature headers, error notifications, and delivery guarantees vary by provider. The examples below use the documented behavior of ScreenshotOne and ScreenshotMAX; don’t assume their conventions apply to another API.

How the screenshot webhook flow works
- Make a receiver available. Configure an endpoint that the provider can reach and that accepts POST requests. Use HTTPS in production. A local-only server cannot receive callbacks from an external provider unless you expose it through a suitable public development tunnel.
- Submit an asynchronous screenshot request. Include the provider’s asynchronous-mode option and your webhook URL. The initial response means the job was accepted or queued, not that the screenshot is ready.
- Record the job ID. Save the request or render ID from the initial response so you can associate a later callback with the operation that started it.
- Receive and verify the callback. Keep the raw request body available until signature verification is complete. Verify the signature using the provider’s documented header and signing secret before trusting or processing the payload.
- Persist the result and acknowledge. Store the job ID, completion state, and result URL or storage location. Return a successful 2xx response promptly; move slower downstream work to a background worker.
- Handle failure and duplicate delivery. Implement a failure state as well as success handling. Make processing safe to repeat, using a stable event or job identifier for deduplication when the provider supplies one.

Build a receiver that verifies and records callbacks
Receiver requirements
- Expose a POST route at the exact URL submitted with the capture request.
- Capture the raw request body before JSON parsing if the provider’s signature validation requires it.
- Validate signatures before triggering trusted downstream actions. Keep the signing secret separate from the API key when the provider specifies a separate secret.
- Persist the job identifier and result location, then return a 2xx response quickly.
- Make repeated processing safe. Providers’ retry and duplicate-delivery behavior differs, so check the selected provider’s documentation rather than assuming a retry schedule.
Provider-specific signature details
ScreenshotOne documents the X-ScreenshotOne-Signature header and HMAC SHA-256 verification with a secret key that is different from the API key. ScreenshotMAX documents optional signed webhooks using X-Screenshotmax-WebHook-Signature, HMAC SHA-256, and the exact raw JSON body. The header names and signing conventions differ; follow the provider’s verification instructions rather than transplanting code or key handling from another service.

After successful verification, parse the provider’s documented payload and map its fields into your own job record. For example, ScreenshotMAX’s documented example has id and file fields. ScreenshotOne’s JSON response mode can provide screenshot_url; its storage example needs storage_return_location=true to return the storage location. Treat these as provider-specific schemas, not interchangeable payloads.

Handle failed jobs, retries, and acknowledgments
Failed captures
Do not assume every failed render will call your endpoint. ScreenshotOne says error callbacks are not sent by default; set webhook_errors=true if you need error details. Its documentation describes error codes and messages in the JSON body when JSON response mode is used, as well as error headers. ScreenshotMAX documents checking request status as done or failed in its dashboard. Build your monitoring and recovery path around the behavior documented by the provider you use.
Fast acknowledgment and duplicate-safe processing
Return a successful 2xx as soon as the callback has been authenticated and safely recorded or queued. If processing involves downloads, database work, or other slow tasks, enqueue them and let a worker handle them after the acknowledgment. OpenAI’s general webhook guide recommends quick acknowledgments, background processing, and event-ID deduplication; it says OpenAI may retry events for up to 72 hours with exponential backoff and that duplicates can occur. Those timing and delivery statements describe OpenAI’s webhook system, not screenshot API providers.

Troubleshoot callbacks that do not arrive or process
- The provider cannot reach the endpoint: Confirm the URL is publicly reachable, the route accepts POST, and any firewall or gateway permits inbound traffic. A localhost URL by itself is not reachable from the provider.
- The initiating request returns acceptance but no image: This is expected in asynchronous mode. Check your callback receiver and correlate its event using the job ID saved from the initial response.
- Signature verification fails: Preserve the exact raw body, confirm the provider’s exact header name and signing secret, and follow its documented HMAC procedure. Do not verify a reserialized JSON body if the provider requires the raw bytes.
- The callback has no screenshot URL: Check the selected response mode and storage options. For ScreenshotOne’s storage workflow, its docs specify
storage_return_location=true; JSON mode can providescreenshot_url. - A failed job has no callback: Check whether error callbacks are enabled. ScreenshotOne requires
webhook_errors=truefor error details; ScreenshotMAX documents status inspection in its dashboard. - Your receiver times out or reports an error: Record or enqueue the verified event, return 2xx promptly, and perform long-running work asynchronously. Consult the provider’s own documentation for its response and delivery behavior.
