That usually means the encoder or streaming computer, the network equipment that provides internet access, and any camera or audio gear the stream needs. Size the inverter and compatible battery from the equipment’s measured wattage and the number of hours you need to keep streaming. An inverter can maintain power at your church, but it cannot keep the stream online if your internet provider’s network also goes down.
What must stay powered for the livestream to continue?
Start by tracing the signal and power chain from the service to YouTube. List only equipment that must remain on for the stream to continue, then include each item in the backup plan.

- Encoder: the streaming computer or dedicated hardware encoder. Without it, the stream stops even if the router remains on.
- Network equipment: router, ONT or modem, and any network switch or access point the encoder depends on. Keeping a router powered does not necessarily keep a computer or camera running.
- Essential production equipment: camera, audio mixer, capture device, or other AV equipment required by your setup. Decide what is essential to preserve the live picture and sound.
YouTube says network disruption can break a live stream and recommends a reliable connection, upload headroom, and testing the setup before going live. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and troubleshooting guidance. A wired Ethernet connection from encoder to router can reduce local reliance on Wi-Fi, but it cannot prevent an upstream internet outage.
How to size an inverter and battery for your church stream
There is no sound universal inverter size for a church livestream: the required capacity depends on the actual equipment load, the desired runtime, and the inverter and battery characteristics. Do not select a system from battery amp-hours or inverter VA alone.

1. Measure the essential load
Make an inventory of the devices that must stay on and find their actual power consumption in watts. Use measured operating consumption where possible; a device’s label rating may describe a maximum rather than its typical draw. Add the essential loads together. If some lights, displays, or other equipment are not needed to maintain the stream, leave them off the backed-up circuit to reduce the load.
2. Set the backup duration
Decide how long the livestream must continue without mains power. The required runtime might be the remainder of a service or another duration chosen by the church; there is no single appropriate target for every site. The longer the target and the higher the load, the more usable battery energy the system needs.

3. Match the inverter and battery to the load and runtime
Check the inverter’s output capacity in watts and its power factor, then confirm that the selected battery configuration can support the load for the target duration. Battery sizing must account for inverter losses, battery depth of discharge, age, and temperature. Runtime should be checked against the manufacturer’s discharge data at the intended load, not inferred from a headline capacity figure. Choose a backup arrangement for the whole chain
One inverter or UPS for production and networking
A single appropriately sized system can keep the essential AV and network equipment operating together. Add the measured loads of all devices that must continue, then verify the inverter and battery configuration against the runtime target. This is the more complete approach when the church needs the encoder and network equipment to remain powered as one working system.
A dedicated router UPS plus separate production backup
A compatible UPS or DC mini UPS can keep a router and ONT/modem powered, but it will not power the encoder, camera, or other production equipment unless those are backed up separately. Check device voltage, connector, polarity where applicable, and the expected runtime against the product labels and manuals. APC’s India reseller guidance discusses router and modem backup as a use case, but it is secondary commercial guidance: APC India support.

Check that internet service survives the outage
An inverter can preserve power to your church’s networking devices; it cannot supply internet if the ISP’s local equipment or upstream network loses power or service. Ask your provider whether its connection remains available during local outages and what equipment at your site must be backed up. A wired connection may make the local link more dependable, but it does not fix a provider-side interruption.

Install and test the system before a service
Installation and battery safety
Choose a dry, well-ventilated location and follow the exact inverter and battery manuals. Have a qualified local electrician assess wiring, earthing, changeover arrangements, and ventilation, and handle installation. Exide recommends listing essential devices such as computers and Wi-Fi routers before choosing an inverter, and consulting its calculator or a dealer for matching: Exide home inverter guidance. Do not improvise battery wiring or assume a battery is compatible because its voltage appears suitable.
Rehearse a mains failure
- Complete the installation and confirm that every backed-up device is on the intended circuit.
- With the stream running in a test or rehearsal, disconnect mains power to the backed-up load using the proper procedure for the installed system.
- Check that the encoder, camera and audio chain, router, ONT/modem, and any required switch or access point stay on through the changeover.
- Inspect the YouTube live preview and confirm picture, sound, and connection status.
- Restore mains power and verify that the equipment returns to normal operation without interrupting the setup.
YouTube recommends testing the setup and previewing the stream before starting. A rehearsal can expose both changeover problems and weak links in the network or AV chain before a service depends on them.
Troubleshooting: what can still stop the stream?
- Router stays on, but the stream ends: The encoder, camera, or required AV equipment may not be on backup power. Recheck the full load inventory and test every essential device during a simulated cut.
- All local equipment stays on, but YouTube loses the stream: The ISP or upstream network may be unavailable. Check with the provider about outage resilience; local battery backup cannot repair a provider-side interruption.
- The inverter trips or the equipment shuts down at changeover: The load may exceed the inverter’s usable watt capacity, or the changeover arrangement may not suit the equipment. Have the installed capacity and transfer behavior checked by a qualified electrician.
- Runtime is shorter than expected: Actual load, conversion losses, battery condition, temperature, and depth of discharge affect runtime. Recheck the load and battery against manufacturer discharge data at the intended operating conditions.
- A router mini UPS does not power the network device: Voltage, connector, or polarity may be incompatible. Verify specifications in the manuals before reconnecting it.
- Picture or audio fails after power changes: Check the full production chain and YouTube preview, not just whether the encoder is still on. Test the camera, capture device, mixer, and connections during rehearsal.
