Then interpret the columns in that view and check any eligibility minimums attached to a record list. NHL.com’s stats interface provides player tables and reporting controls; Records.NHL.com is the League’s destination for official records and history.
Start by checking what the number covers
A total is only comparable when its reporting scope matches the other total. Before comparing players, identify whether the table shows a career, season, or single-game view and whether it covers the regular season or playoffs. NHL.com’s skater stats page provides all-time, season, and game reporting views; use its controls to select the relevant view.

For example, career regular-season points should not be compared directly with a single-season total or a playoff total. State the scope whenever you quote a figure, and confirm current figures in the live table because totals can change as games are played.
How to read the main skater columns
The skater table combines scoring totals with other categories. These fields answer different questions, so no single column should be treated as a complete measure of a player’s contribution.
#1 Best Overall
| Column or group | What it helps you see |
|---|---|
| GP, G, A, P | Games played, goals, assists, and points. Read games played alongside scoring totals to see how much playing time the total spans. |
| P/GP | Points per game, a rate that provides context when players have appeared in different numbers of games. |
| +/-, PIM | Additional categories displayed alongside scoring. Consult the NHL glossary for formal definitions and recording details. |
| EVG/EVP, PPG/PPP, SHG/SHP, OTG, GWG | Categories that distinguish even-strength, power-play, shorthanded, overtime, and game-winning goals or points. Check the NHL glossary for exact category definitions. |
| S, S% | Shots and shooting percentage, separate measures of shot volume and conversion. |
| TOI/GP, FOW% | Average time on ice per game and faceoff percentage, additional context fields in the table. |
The NHL’s all-time regular-season skater table displayed Wayne Gretzky with 1,487 games, 894 goals, 1,963 assists, and 2,857 points when retrieved. Those are figures shown in that all-time view, not a substitute for checking the live table when current standing matters. See the NHL all-time skater table.
For formal meanings of abbreviations, use the NHL stats glossary. The labels alone do not establish every calculation or recording rule.

How to read goalie statistics
Goaltender tables use a different set of fields from skater tables. Separate game outcomes from workload and rate measures when interpreting them.
| Group | Fields shown | Reading cue |
|---|---|---|
| Results | W, L, T, OT | Game outcomes, which should be read in the selected season or career and game-type scope. |
| Workload | GS, SA, Svs, TOI | Games started, shots against, saves, and time on ice provide volume or playing-time context. |
| Goals allowed and rates | GA, Sv%, GAA | Goals against and rate statistics are not interchangeable with wins or workload totals. |
| Shutouts and scoring | SO and goalie scoring fields | Separate categories in the goalie table; check the selected view before comparing. |
The NHL goaltender stats page lists these categories. When comparing goalies, pair a rate or outcome with at least one workload field, and match the time span and game type. Use the NHL glossary for formal definitions rather than inferring formulas from abbreviated labels.

Check record eligibility before comparing leaders
Some record lists set minimum opportunities so a rate statistic is not ranked on a very small sample. The NHL’s regular-season goaltender records page specifies these minimums for the categories shown:
- Career goals-against average and save-percentage categories require at least 100 games.
- Season goals-against average and save-percentage categories require at least 25 games.
- Shootout save-percentage categories have shot minimums as well; check the particular leaderboard for its threshold.
Read the threshold attached to the exact category you are using. A record comparison that omits its minimum can make a short or limited sample appear equivalent to a more established one. See NHL goaltender records: regular season.

A practical method for fair comparisons
- Match the reporting scope. Compare career with career, season with season, or game with game. Keep regular-season and playoff records separate.
- Check opportunity and workload. For skaters, note games played alongside scoring totals. For goalies, consider games and starts or shots faced alongside rates and outcomes.
- Choose statistics that fit the question. For skater scoring production, consider goals, assists, points, and points per game together. For goalies, keep workload visible alongside wins, rate statistics, and shutouts.
- Check record eligibility. Confirm the minimum games or shots on the specific record list, especially for rate-stat leaderboards.
This method helps make the comparison fairer; it does not mean any one statistic captures a player’s overall value.

Where to find NHL statistics and historical records
NHL.com/stats provides skater and goalie tables with all-time, season, and game views. Records.NHL.com organizes official individual and team records, milestones, trophies, draft history, and other League history. The NHL announced in 2018 that the digital records site replaced its annual printed Guide & Record Book and that online records update as games are played. For an active record position, use the live site rather than relying on an older printed snapshot.
Best Value
The NHL reported in 2017 that its digitization added more than 15 million new player and game data points, covering more than 24,000 games from 1917 through 1987. That is the NHL’s description of data added by that project in 2017, not a current count of the entire database. The announcement is available in the NHL Public Relations release, “NHL Offers Online Access to 100 Years of Player, Team, Game Stats.”
The NHL’s stated goal for the digital history destination was to bring fans closer to the game’s history. Russell Levine, NHL vice president of Statistics and Information, said in 2018: “Our goal with Records.NHL.com is to continue to bring NHL fans closer to the game’s history,” as reported in the League’s announcement of the new online home for League history.
What a printed guide can—and cannot—tell you
A printed edition can serve as a historical reference or collectible, but its figures are frozen at publication. The NHL says the online records destination replaced the annual printed guide and updates as games are played, so use the current site for active-player totals. The publisher describes the 2018 NHL Official Guide & Record Book as covering statistics, retired players, prospects, and current players.
