To read Instagram messages without sending a “Seen” receipt, turn off Show read receipts in the Instagram mobile app. Current guides report a setting for all chats and a separate option for an individual conversation, though labels and availability can vary by account and app version.
Turn off read receipts for all chats
To apply the setting broadly, use Instagram’s mobile app. The reported path is:

- Open your Instagram profile and tap the menu.
- Open Messages and story replies.
- Tap Show read receipts and switch it off.
This control was reported after Instagram announced read-receipt opt-outs in January 2024. The current menu may look different on your device or account; check the settings available in your app if a label or option is missing. Turn off read receipts for one conversation

- Open the Instagram conversation.
- Tap the chat name at the top.
- Open Privacy & safety.
- Switch off Read receipts, if the option appears.
That is the per-chat alternative to changing the broader setting. The option may not appear in every account or interface. Engadget’s January 2024 report described both chat-level and all-chat controls; Guiding Tech’s guide describes the conversation settings route.
What changes when read receipts are off?
A 2026 guide reports a reciprocal trade-off: with read receipts disabled, you also cannot see whether other people have read your messages. Treat that as reported behavior rather than a guarantee for every chat type or account, because Instagram’s current official help material does not establish the behavior for all configurations. Read receipts are not Activity Status
Activity Status indicates whether someone is active or recently active; it is not the “Seen” indicator in a conversation. Instagram says that people who follow or message you may see your activity status, and turning Activity Status off also means you will not see other people’s status. To hide message read receipts, look for the separate read-receipts control. Instagram Help Center: Activity Status.
Are notification previews or airplane mode reliable alternatives?
Do not rely on notification previews, opening or expanding a notification, airplane mode, or similar workarounds as guaranteed ways to avoid a receipt. Instagram’s notification help explains how to manage which interactions and posts generate push notifications, but it does not guarantee that a preview will show a complete message or that interacting with a notification will never mark it as read. If the setting is missing
- Check both Messages and story replies in app settings and Privacy & safety inside the chat; guides report separate global and per-chat controls.
- Check the labels in the current app rather than assuming every account has the same menu or rollout.
- Do not assume that behavior is identical in group chats, message requests, on desktop, or across regions; current evidence does not establish those cases.
Secondary guidance describes the setting as unavailable on computer, but that platform limit is not confirmed by the official help material cited here. If the mobile controls are absent, Instagram’s interface for your account is the best indication of what is currently available.
