How to Read Caffeine and Stimulant Labels on Drinks

Check servings, caffeine milligrams and ingredient sources to understand how much caffeine a drink contains—and why label rules differ by product and country.

To work out how much caffeine you will drink, check the serving size, servings per container and caffeine amount, then multiply the per-serving amount by the servings you will consume. Scan the ingredients for caffeine sources such as guarana, yerba mate and kola nut—but do not treat their presence as a measurement. Disclosure rules vary by product category and country, so use the specific package rather than assumptions about all energy drinks.

1. Check how much of the package counts as a serving

Find the serving size and servings per container before comparing caffeine figures. A number shown per serving is not necessarily the amount in the whole can or bottle. Health Canada advises consumers to check both caffeine per serving and servings per container: its consumer guidance on caffeinated energy drinks.

If a hypothetical bottle has two servings and lists 100 mg of caffeine per serving, drinking the full bottle means consuming 200 mg. That is an arithmetic example, not a measurement of a real product. If the label gives caffeine per container, use that total rather than multiplying it again.

2. Find the caffeine amount and what it applies to

Look for caffeine in milligrams (mg) and note whether the figure is for one serving, the whole container or a stated volume. The package size and serving size may differ, so do not assume a per-serving figure applies to the whole can or bottle.

If the amount is missing or unclear, do not estimate it from the ingredient list or the position of an ingredient in that list. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommends contacting the manufacturer for information. Formulations and package sizes can change, so a product’s current label is more useful than a general category estimate.

3. Look for caffeine sources in the ingredients

Caffeine may be named directly, but it can also come from ingredients that contain caffeine. The FDA lists guarana, yerba mate, kola nut, cocoa, coffee and tea among such ingredients. Their presence is a clue to a caffeine source, not a way to calculate the drink’s milligrams.

Guarana and yerba mate, for example, can appear in energy or stimulant drinks. Unless the package gives a total caffeine figure, the ingredient list alone does not establish how much caffeine the drink contains.

4. Separate caffeine from other stimulant or energy-drink ingredients

A drink may also list taurine, ginseng, B vitamins, glucuronolactone, yohimbe, carnitine or bitter orange. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) also describes guarana, taurine and L-carnitine among ingredients commonly found in energy drinks: The Buzz on Energy Drinks.

These ingredients are not interchangeable with a caffeine amount. Their appearance does not tell you how many milligrams of caffeine the drink contains, nor does an ingredient list necessarily quantify the contribution of each one.

5. Notice which kind of label the product uses

In the United States, conventional foods use a Nutrition Facts panel, while dietary supplements use a Supplement Facts panel. A drink or shot marketed as a supplement may therefore be labeled differently from a conventional beverage. The FDA explains supplement-panel conventions in its Dietary Supplement Labeling Guide.

Panel type matters, but it does not settle whether you can find a total caffeine figure. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) notes that energy drinks can be marketed as beverages or supplements and that their caffeine amount may not be easy to identify: Energy Drinks. FDA guidance adds that many packaged foods and beverages voluntarily declare caffeine amounts; caffeine added as a stand-alone ingredient must be named in the ingredient list, and most U.S. energy drinks list total caffeine from all sources. Inspect the package in front of you rather than assuming every energy drink must show caffeine in milligrams. FDA also notes that it has no regulation specific to “energy drinks”; that does not mean these beverages are unregulated, since general ingredient rules apply. 6. Compare drinks on a like-for-like basis

Compare the caffeine amount per serving, the number of servings you will drink, the package total, the volume tied to the declaration, caffeine-source ingredients, panel type and the country’s rules. Can size or front-of-package words such as “energy” are not enough to establish which drink contains more caffeine.

Reference figure What it describes
41–246 mg per 12 fluid ounces Range the FDA cited in 2024 for some energy drink brands.
54–328 mg per 16 fluid ounces General energy-drink range cited by the FDA in 2024.
23–83 mg per 12 fluid ounces Typical caffeinated soft-drink range cited by the FDA in 2024.

These are category ranges, not measurements for a particular product. They do not replace the current package’s caffeine declaration. Figures are from the FDA’s 2024 consumer guidance.

7. Apply the rules for the product’s country

United States

U.S. disclosure depends on the product and how caffeine is used. FDA says added stand-alone caffeine must appear by name in the ingredient list, but that does not mean every package must display a total caffeine amount in milligrams. The agency says most U.S. energy drinks list total caffeine from all sources; check the individual label.

Canada

Health Canada says caffeinated energy drinks are limited to 180 mg of caffeine per serving from all sources. This Canadian limit applies to that product category; it is not a universal limit and should not be assumed to govern U.S. drinks. See Health Canada’s caffeinated energy drinks page for the rule and label information.

8. Put caffeine figures in context without treating them as personal limits

The FDA cites 400 mg per day as an amount not generally associated with negative effects for most adults. It also emphasizes that sensitivity and circumstances vary, so this is context—not a target or a universal safe limit. The FDA advises discussing caffeine consumption for children and teens with a health professional. Its consumer guidance also notes that decaffeinated coffee and tea can still contain caffeine: “decaf” does not mean caffeine-free.

Do not use pure or highly concentrated caffeine powder or liquid as a substitute for labeled drinks. The FDA warns that these forms are difficult to measure and can contain toxic or potentially lethal amounts, with a very small margin between a safe and dangerous amount. Its warning includes the example that one teaspoon of pure powdered caffeine can contain as much caffeine as 28 cups of coffee; this is a hazard illustration, not a serving recommendation. See Pure and Highly Concentrated Caffeine.
