A rotating 3D map is still showing mapped ground, but its angled camera can make screen directions differ from compass directions. Check the compass before judging which way is north, then use the separate controls for moving, zooming, rotating, and tilting. If the perspective gets confusing, reset the heading or switch to a top-down view.
What changes when a 3D map rotates?
A 3D map can be understood as a 2D map viewed from an angled camera above the ground. Apple’s MapKit documentation describes the camera using four properties: center, the map point shown at the middle of the screen; altitude, the camera’s height; pitch, its angle relative to the ground; and heading, the direction it faces. At zero pitch, the camera looks straight down for a standard flat view. Apple Developer’s MapKit documentation explains this model; individual apps may use different labels.
When heading changes, the map’s top edge may no longer point north. A road that appears to run left-to-right on screen has not necessarily changed direction on the ground. Read the compass or orientation indicator before using screen-left and screen-right to describe real-world directions.
Know the four basic map actions
- Pan: Move the map’s center to look at another place.
- Zoom: Change how much area is visible.
- Rotate or change heading: Turn the camera’s facing direction around the map.
- Tilt or change pitch: Raise or lower the viewing angle, shifting between a straight-down view and a more oblique perspective.
These actions affect different aspects of the view. For example, panning changes the place at the screen center, while rotation changes which direction the camera faces.

Find your orientation again
The compass is the quickest recovery tool in the documented interfaces below. In Google Earth, clicking the compass returns the globe to a true-north-facing view; Apple Maps on iPhone uses its compass to show north after rotation. If perspective still makes nearby places or routes hard to compare, return to a flat or top-down view. Then rotate again in smaller increments if you need an angled view.
Navigate in Google Earth on a computer
Google Earth’s desktop controls are product-specific; the gestures are not a universal standard for every map app. Google for Developers’ Navigate the globe guide and Google Earth Help’s computer guide document these controls.

Navigate in Apple Maps on iPhone
Apple documents these touch gestures for iPhone Maps. Its immersive map features are not available in every country or region. Apple’s iPhone guide to immersive map views describes the controls and availability caveat.
- Move the view: Drag the map with one finger.
- Zoom: Pinch open or closed. You can also double-tap, then drag up or down to zoom.
- Rotate: Touch and hold with two fingers, then rotate them.
- Tilt: Drag two fingers up or down to adjust the angle of a 3D map.
- Show north: Tap the compass after rotating the map.
- Return to a flat map: Tap 2D. Zooming out may change the map into a globe, which you can drag to rotate.
Recognize controls on a web 3D map
Google Maps JavaScript API’s 3D map controls include options for zooming, moving the map center, changing camera heading, adjusting tilt, and resetting to a northerly heading. Those labels describe an API interface, not the exact controls or gestures in every consumer map app. See Google’s 3D map controls and exploration documentation for that web API.

Choose the view that makes the map easiest to read
Use a top-down or 2D view when perspective makes the relationship between places, roads, or directions difficult to judge. Use an angled 3D view when the extra perspective helps you inspect an area. Before interpreting direction in either view, check the orientation indicator; when uncertain, reset north and continue from there.
Controls vary by app, device, and platform, so use the instructions for the interface you have open rather than assuming one mouse or touch gesture works everywhere. Three-dimensional imagery and immersive features can also vary by location and product.
