This shuffles files played by your encoder—not a playlist hosted on a YouTube watch page.
What OBS shuffle does—and what it does not
OBS’s VLC Video source plays a playlist of media files. Its Shuffle Playlist option randomizes playback rather than following the file-list order; Loop Playlist restarts playback after the playlist ends. OBS documents shuffle as off by default and looping as on by default. Its documentation does not promise a particular randomization algorithm, a different order on every loop, or that each file appears exactly once per cycle. OBS Media Sources.

This is not a way to enter a YouTube playlist URL into OBS and randomize videos hosted on YouTube. The files must be available to the encoder, and the encoder sends their playback as the live stream.
Set up a shuffled, looping playlist in OBS
1. Prepare your media and install VLC
Put the prerecorded video files somewhere the computer running OBS can access them. OBS’s VLC Video source requires VLC Media Player to be installed. If you use 64-bit OBS, OBS specifies that you need 64-bit VLC. OBS lists media sources for Windows, macOS and Linux; availability can depend on the installed VLC setup.

2. Add the VLC Video source
- Open the OBS scene that will carry the stream.
- In the Sources panel, select + and add VLC Video.
- In the source properties, add the video files you want in the playlist. Confirm that the files appear in the list and are accessible from the computer running OBS.
Use VLC Video for multiple files. OBS’s built-in Media Source is documented with a loop option for repeating one file; it is not the multi-item playlist source described here.
3. Turn on shuffle and looping
- Open the VLC Video source properties.
- Check Shuffle Playlist to randomize playback.
- Check Loop Playlist if playback should restart after the last playlist item.
- Confirm the source plays as expected in the OBS preview before sending it live.
Shuffle controls the order in which the source plays files. The OBS documentation does not state when or how often it reshuffles, or guarantee that successive cycles have different orders.

4. Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select a stream.
- Copy the stream’s server URL and stream key from YouTube into OBS’s stream settings. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions describe this connection flow.
- Start streaming from OBS, then check the preview and stream health in Live Control Room. Follow YouTube’s prompt there to go live.
If the channel has never streamed live before, YouTube says activation can take up to 24 hours. Allow for that before scheduling a first broadcast.
Plan separately for a 24/7 feed and its replay
A live feed and a watchable YouTube video are related but distinct resources: the feed is the transmission, while a broadcast can correspond to a separate YouTube video. Google’s Live Streaming API explanation describes this distinction and gives an example of an ongoing 24/7 broadcast alongside a separate completed broadcast.

YouTube’s encoder guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish that a single uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast will be archived as a replay. If you need a replay, plan around YouTube’s stated under-12-hour condition rather than assuming a continuous 24/7 feed will produce one.
Rights and stream health still matter
Shuffle and loop are playback settings, not permission to rebroadcast the files. Make sure you have the necessary rights to stream each video and its audio on YouTube; technical access to a file does not establish permission to use it.

For this playlist method, the media source is local to the encoder, so continuous playback depends on that setup and its access to the files. HLS is not required just to shuffle a playlist. YouTube’s HLS setup guidance applies when choosing HLS ingestion; it calls for compatible encoder output and segment settings and notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it sends video segments rather than a continuous stream.

Or let it run in the cloud
If you want the videos to keep streaming without leaving a computer running at home, StreamNeo is a cloud service for looping uploaded videos on YouTube. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It runs the stream from the cloud, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. StreamNeo’s shuffle controls are not established here, so choose this option for cloud looping rather than assuming it duplicates OBS’s documented shuffle toggle.
