Create a plain-text FFmpeg concat file listing your video paths in playback order, then use FFmpeg’s concat demuxer to feed compatible files into an encoder output connected to YouTube Live. The playlist file contains media paths—not your YouTube stream key. This guide covers the file format, compatibility checks, connection workflow, common failures, and a cloud alternative if you do not want a computer running continuously.
What an FFmpeg playlist file does
Here, “playlist” means a local FFmpeg concat script: a text file that tells FFmpeg which media files to read, in what order. It is not a YouTube HLS playlist. The concat demuxer joins compatible input streams and adjusts timestamps so each file follows the previous one; it does not simply make any collection of videos compatible.

Create the concat playlist
Write the file
- Create a plain-text file in the directory containing your media. Name it, for example,
playlist.ffconcat. - Put this exact header on the first line, with no leading spaces or byte-order mark, then add one file entry per video:
ffconcat version 1.0 file 'clip-01.mp4' file 'clip-02.mp4' file 'clip-03.mp4' - Save the file as plain text. Keep each path relative to the playlist’s directory, as in the example, or use an appropriate full path. The demuxer reads entries in their listed order.
The header enables format auto-detection only when it is exactly ffconcat version 1.0 at the beginning of the file. FFmpeg documents quoting and escaping rules for paths; filenames with apostrophes or other special characters need particular care. Consult the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation and test unusual paths before relying on the playlist for a long stream.

Keep the stream key out of the file
The concat file should list media paths only. Do not put a YouTube stream key in the playlist, a public script or repository, a screenshot, or a log. Configure the key privately in the encoder output settings.

Check whether the videos can be concatenated directly
The concat demuxer works at the packet level, so its inputs need compatible stream structure: the same streams, codecs, time bases, and related properties. A shared file extension such as .mp4 does not establish compatibility. The FFmpeg FAQ distinguishes this demuxer approach—useful when compatible inputs can be joined without re-encoding—from the concat filter, which is the appropriate direction when re-encoding is needed.
- Use the concat demuxer when the files have compatible streams and you want to avoid re-encoding.
- Normalize or re-encode incompatible files before concatenation, using a filter-based workflow where appropriate.
- Check durations as well as codecs and streams. The demuxer uses file durations to place later inputs; inaccurate or estimated durations, including metadata affected by truncation, can create timestamp gaps or artifacts. A
durationdirective can override a stored duration when you know a reliable value.
For options available in your installed build, check ffmpeg -h demuxer=concat. This helps confirm the local tool’s behavior; it does not replace checking that the media itself is compatible.

Send the loop to YouTube Live
The command pattern below shows the concat input and real-time reading option, but it is illustrative—not a tested, universal command. You must supply encoding, muxing, and destination settings appropriate for your FFmpeg build and the protocol configured for the YouTube stream:

Use it only when you trust the playlist and its paths. Do not treat the ellipsis as a usable command: the output options and destination must be configured before running FFmpeg.

- Copy the stream server URL and stream key shown for that stream into your encoder’s private output configuration. Keep the key confidential.
- Start FFmpeg and check that YouTube receives the encoder signal.
- For a scheduled stream, check the preview in Live Control Room and select Go live when ready.
YouTube’s encoder guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is a YouTube policy detail and may change; confirm the current wording in YouTube’s encoder setup help before planning around archive behavior.
Do not confuse concat files with HLS playlists
An FFmpeg concat file is a local text input that lists files to join. YouTube HLS ingestion is a separate network protocol with its own segment and playlist requirements. YouTube’s HLS setup guidance specifies TS segments and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP. Those HLS requirements do not apply to the local concat script described here.

Troubleshoot common failures
FFmpeg does not recognize the playlist format
Check that the file begins with the exact header ffconcat version 1.0, with no blank line, leading spaces, or byte-order mark before it. Confirm that the input filename in the command points to the saved playlist.

Check the working directory and whether each relative path is relative to the playlist location. Apply FFmpeg’s documented quoting and escaping rules, especially for apostrophes and special characters. Test troublesome filenames in a short run.

The output has gaps, timestamp artifacts, or concatenation errors
Compare the inputs’ streams, codecs, time bases, and structure; matching extensions are not enough. Also check that durations are accurate. If the files are structurally incompatible, normalize or re-encode them and use a filter-based concat workflow instead of assuming the demuxer can join them cleanly.
YouTube does not receive the stream
Verify that the output is configured with the server URL and stream key for the correct stream in Live Control Room, and that FFmpeg’s output protocol and muxing options match that configuration. Keep the key private while checking settings and logs. Use the installed FFmpeg demuxer help and YouTube’s current encoder guidance rather than copying an incomplete example command.
