To hide personal information in a Windows 11 screenshot, press Windows key + Shift + S, capture the relevant area, then use Snipping Tool’s Text actions > Quick redact for detected email addresses and phone numbers. For other details, use a solid opaque cover in an image editor, save a copy, and inspect it before sharing. Quick redact is not documented as covering every type of sensitive information.

Redact email addresses and phone numbers with Snipping Tool

  1. Press Windows key + Shift + S to open the Snipping Tool capture overlay. Choose a rectangular, window, full-screen, or freeform snip. Capture only the area you need when doing so excludes unrelated private details.
  2. In the Snipping Tool editor, select Text actions. Microsoft says text recognition identifies text in the snip and offers Quick redact for detected email addresses and phone numbers. Choose the Quick redact option for the supported details you want to cover.
  3. Review the entire image yourself. Microsoft’s instructions name email addresses and phone numbers for Quick redact; they do not establish that it detects every occurrence or covers names, street addresses, account identifiers, access codes, or other confidential text.
  4. Save the edited snip with Ctrl + S. Reopen or inspect the saved file at normal size and check that the details you meant to hide are not readable before sharing it.

Microsoft Support says, “All text recognition processes are performed locally on your device.” This statement applies to text recognition; it does not establish how every file, clipboard item, backup, or sharing action is handled. Microsoft’s Snipping Tool instructions document the capture shortcut, Text actions, Quick redact, saving, and sharing.

Cover other sensitive details with an opaque shape

For information Quick redact does not cover, open the screenshot in an image editor such as Paint and place a solid, opaque shape over the detail. Microsoft documents editing a snip in Paint. Windows Photos also provides crop and markup tools, but the cited documentation does not establish that ordinary annotations irreversibly remove the original image data. Do not treat a translucent highlighter or freehand pen stroke as secure redaction.

Cropping can exclude information beyond the crop boundary, but it will not hide details that remain in the selected image. When a detail is in view, cover it with an opaque block, save a new copy, and inspect that saved copy before sharing. Microsoft describes copying window or screen contents and editing photos in Windows.
