How to Quickly Check Whether Your Tap Water Is Safe

Quick water checks depend on the source and hazard. Check utility alerts, test private wells through a certified lab, and follow local instructions during advisories.

There isn’t one quick test that can confirm every kind of drinking-water hazard. If you use public water, check your utility’s annual water-quality report and current alerts. If you use a private well, arrange testing through a state-certified laboratory and ask your health department which contaminants matter locally. During an active advisory, follow local officials’ instructions instead of relying on a home test.

Choose the check that fits your water source

Situation First check What it can tell you
Public water, no specific concern Your utility’s annual water-quality report and utility or local-government alerts The report provides context about monitored water quality; alerts are the place to check for current problems. Public water utilities must meet EPA standards and notify customers when water does not meet them. CDC prevention guidance
Public water with an unusual change or other concern Contact your water utility or health department and ask whether testing is appropriate A change can warrant follow-up, but appearance, taste, and smell cannot establish whether water is safe. CDC prevention guidance
Private well Ask your health department about local risks, then use a state-certified laboratory Testing should cover the recommended baseline and any additional contaminants relevant to the well’s location. CDC well-testing guidance
Active boil-water notice Follow the local notice; use bottled or boiled water as directed A boil-water advisory concerns germs. CDC’s general instruction is a rolling boil for one minute, or three minutes above 6,500 feet. Local instructions take precedence. CDC advisory overview
Suspected fuel, chemical, or radioactive contamination Use another safe source and contact local authorities Boiling or disinfecting does not make water containing fuel, toxic chemicals, or radioactive materials safe. CDC emergency guidance

Public water serves most U.S. residents: the CDC reported that 9 out of 10 people in the United States get tap water from a public water system in 2024. CDC, “Water Quality and Your Health”

How to check a public-water report and alerts

Find the utility’s annual water-quality report

Look on your water utility’s website for its annual water-quality report, sometimes called a Consumer Confidence Report. It gives information about monitored water quality; it is not a real-time reading of what is happening today. Use it as background, not as a substitute for checking current notices.

Sign up for current notices

Subscribe to alerts from your water utility or local government so you can learn about advisories and other urgent conditions. If a notice is active, use the instructions in that notice even if the annual report shows compliant results. Current precautions depend on the specific event and may differ from routine guidance. How to check private-well water

Use a state-certified laboratory

Private wells are not covered by the rules that protect public water systems, so owners are responsible for testing. CDC recommends testing at least once a year for total coliform bacteria, nitrates, total dissolved solids, and pH, using a state-certified laboratory. Ask your local health department which additional germs or chemicals may be relevant where you live; the right panel is not identical for every well. CDC well-testing guidance

Ask how to collect the sample

Follow the laboratory’s instructions for the sample container, collection point, handling, and delivery. The specific procedures and available tests vary by laboratory, so confirm them before collecting water. If a result identifies a concern, ask the lab or health department how to interpret it and what steps to take.

What a change in water can—and cannot—tell you

Water that changes color, taste, or smell is a reason to contact your utility or health department and ask whether testing is appropriate. But sensory checks alone cannot identify or rule out harmful germs or chemicals. Clear water with a normal taste and smell is not proof of safety, and a change does not by itself identify the hazard. A generic strip or meter that measures only a limited set of properties cannot serve as a general safety clearance. For public systems, CDC directs consumers to utility information and alerts; for private wells, it recommends locally informed testing by a state-certified laboratory. Match any test to the specific contaminant of concern rather than treating one reading as an all-purpose answer. CDC prevention guidance CDC well-testing guidance

What to do during a drinking-water advisory

Boil-water advisory

Follow the local notice for which uses require bottled or boiled water. CDC’s general guidance is to bring water to a rolling boil for one minute, or for three minutes at elevations above 6,500 feet. Even water passed through a household filter must be boiled during a boil-water advisory. CDC describes boiling as “the best way to kill germs in water.” CDC emergency guidance CDC advisory overview

Do-not-drink or do-not-use advisory

These notices are not interchangeable with a boil-water advisory. A do-not-drink notice may require bottled water, while a do-not-use notice may require avoiding contact with the water. Follow the exact local instructions, including any limits on cooking, bathing, or other uses; do not assume boiling resolves the problem. CDC advisory overview

Possible chemical contamination

Do not try to make water safe from fuel, toxic chemicals, or radioactive materials by boiling or disinfecting it. Boiling and disinfection do not remove many chemical hazards, including heavy metals and salts. Use another safe source and contact local authorities for instructions.
