How Quicklime Heating Was Studied for Rapid HIV-1 Detection

Quicklime was used as a heat source in research on an HIV-1 nucleic-acid test. The study showed a promising portable platform, not a consumer-ready HIV test.

Quicklime does not detect HIV by itself. In a 2012 study, researchers used calcium oxide reacting with water to heat an HIV-1 nucleic-acid test called RT-LAMP. The chemical heater was a research platform with potential for point-of-care testing—not an established, consumer-ready quicklime HIV test.

How the chemical heater was used

Calcium oxide, commonly called quicklime, releases heat when it reacts with water. Curtis and colleagues used that exothermic reaction to warm an RT-LAMP assay, a method that amplifies HIV-1 genetic material at a steady temperature rather than cycling through temperatures in a conventional laboratory instrument. The study is described in the CDC Stacks record for the 2012 PLoS One article.

The heat supplies the conditions for the test reaction; it is not itself a signal of HIV. A chemical heater could, in principle, reduce reliance on powered laboratory equipment, but the method still depends on the assay and its handling, not on placing quicklime near a person or specimen.

What the study found—and what it did not establish

The CDC-hosted record reports stable temperatures during amplification and consistent results among three separate chemical heaters and a thermal cycler. The researchers also evaluated the method using whole-blood specimens from people with HIV-1. These findings support the feasibility of the setup under the study conditions.

The authors concluded that RT-LAMP combined with chemical heating offered a portable, rapid and robust nucleic-acid amplification platform with potential to facilitate HIV-1 testing in resource-limited and point-of-care settings. That is a research conclusion, not evidence of regulatory clearance or broad clinical performance. The record does not provide a generalizable sensitivity or specificity figure, so no accuracy percentage can responsibly be inferred from it.

How this differs from a rapid HIV antibody test

The quicklime-heated method targets HIV-1 nucleic acid through amplification. A rapid antibody test instead looks for the body’s antibodies to HIV, using a different assay design. For example, the FDA listing for the OraQuick Rapid HIV-1/2 Antibody Test describes detection of HIV-1/2 antibodies in plasma and HIV-1 antibodies in oral fluid. OraQuick is not the chemical-heating RT-LAMP platform, and quicklime is not required for that antibody test.

Does heat make ordinary rapid HIV tests work?

No. A separate 2011 study assessed how heat exposure affected storage stability for seven rapid HIV antibody assays. It described six of the seven kits as relatively robust within its limited sample panel. That is evidence about how test kits withstand storage conditions; it does not show that heat detects HIV or that antibody tests use quicklime as part of their assay.

Can you buy a quicklime HIV test?

The cited evidence does not establish a marketed or consumer-ready HIV test based on the chemical heater. Buying calcium oxide would not provide an HIV test, and the study record does not establish that its experimental heater, RT-LAMP reagents, or complete assay are available as an approved diagnostic for personal use. For current testing options, use an established HIV testing service or a test authorized for its stated use rather than attempting to assemble laboratory reagents or a chemical heater.
