To embed zero-trust networking in an application, integrate an OpenZiti Edge SDK into its code. That approach suits teams that control the application and can modify it; for fixed or legacy software, OpenZiti documents tunnelers that connect existing applications to its overlay without refactoring them. The right choice depends mainly on where you can make the integration: in the application, on its host, or at the network layer.
What embedding OpenZiti means
OpenZiti is an open-source overlay networking project with an architecture built around a controller, edge routers and fabric routers, alongside application SDKs and tunnelers. Its documentation describes principles including authorize-before-connect, continual authorization and least-privilege access. In the embedded model, the application integrates an SDK; OpenZiti describes the app as holding its identity and handling encryption. Those are the project’s descriptions of its design, not an independent security assessment. OpenZiti’s introduction and project README explain the architecture and SDK approach.

Embedding is different from simply routing an unmodified application through a network component: developers change the application to use an Edge SDK. OpenZiti’s services overview notes that this requires refactoring the application.
Choose the integration boundary first
OpenZiti documents several ways to connect applications and services. Use the boundary that matches what your team can change, rather than assuming every deployment needs an SDK inside every application.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Approach | Where integration happens | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Embedded SDK | In application code | Your team controls the application and can refactor it to use an Edge SDK. |
| Tunneler | On the application host | You want to connect existing software without changing its code. |
| SDK-based proxy | At a proxy layer | Direct embedding does not suit the service; consult the current documentation for implementation specifics. |
| Network access through routers | At the network layer | You choose a network-level integration boundary instead of changing each application. |
The SDK, tunneler and router options are described in the services quickstart, services overview and project README. The available descriptions do not establish that one approach is faster or more secure than another.
How to embed zero trust directly into an application
- Confirm you can change the application. SDK integration means modifying the application to use an Edge SDK. If code changes are off the table, assess the tunneler route instead.
- Choose the SDK for your language. OpenZiti’s services quickstart directs developers to select a language SDK and explore its samples. Setup differs by language; do not assume one SDK’s build steps apply to another.
- Follow that SDK’s integration guidance. For C, the C SDK repository points developers toward adding the project to a CMake build. For Node.js, the Node.js SDK repository describes application and web-server integration and includes an Express example.
- Plan for the service and policy configuration. OpenZiti describes service access in terms of its overlay and authorization model. The available feature description says SDK users need not specify or care about ports and IP addresses; that does not mean deployment requires no network configuration or operational planning. See the features documentation.
- Validate the complete application path. Use the language SDK’s current samples and documentation to check that the application can reach the intended service under the policies you configure. Exact setup and verification steps depend on the SDK and deployment.
When a tunneler is a better fit
A tunneler can bridge existing applications to OpenZiti without refactoring their code. OpenZiti says tunnelers intercept traffic intended for Ziti services and forward it through the overlay. They also configure operating-system service-name resolution and routes, updating those as relevant policy changes. See the tunneler documentation.

This shifts the integration point from application code to the host. It is a practical route to evaluate for legacy or otherwise fixed software; it does not imply that the application itself has been modified to embed an SDK.

- Whether your team can refactor and maintain the application code.
- Whether the project provides an SDK for your language and whether its current repository supplies suitable examples.
- Whether host-level tunneling or a network-level boundary better matches applications you cannot change.
- How the selected approach fits your service definitions, authorization policies and operational responsibilities.
SDK repositories and setup instructions can change. Check the current language-specific repository and OpenZiti documentation before settling on implementation details.
