How to Put an ISP Router in Bridge Mode and Use Your Own Router

A practical, provider-aware guide to bridging an ISP gateway, connecting your own router, avoiding double NAT, and recovering when settings or services change.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To use your own router behind an ISP gateway, first confirm that your provider and exact gateway model support bridge mode or an equivalent IP-passthrough feature. Record the gateway’s current settings, follow the provider’s model-specific procedure, connect the gateway’s designated Ethernet port to your router’s WAN port, and configure the new router with any required PPPoE, VLAN, or other connection details. The gateway may lose Wi-Fi or other services, and the correct port and menu names vary by provider.

What bridge mode does

An ISP gateway commonly combines several functions: the modem or other access equipment that links your home to the provider, a router that assigns local IP addresses and performs network address translation (NAT), and one or more Wi-Fi radios. Bridge mode disables some or all of the gateway’s routing role so a separate router can perform that job.

In the usual arrangement, the gateway passes the provider connection to the personal router. The personal router then supplies DHCP, NAT, firewall rules, Wi-Fi, and its LAN ports. Your phones, computers, televisions, and smart-home devices should connect to the personal router rather than to the gateway.

The main reason to do this is to avoid two routers translating traffic in sequence, a setup commonly called double NAT. Double NAT can complicate inbound connections, some multiplayer games, VPNs, port forwarding, and device discovery. It is a configuration problem, not a promise of faster service: the available vendor guidance does not establish a general speed, latency, security, or Wi-Fi-coverage improvement from bridge mode.

Providers do not implement the feature uniformly. One gateway may offer a menu item called Bridge; another may call the function IP Passthrough, Modem-only, or something else. Those labels do not guarantee identical behavior. Some gateways retain management or voice functions, while others turn off Wi-Fi or make their local administration address unavailable.

Check compatibility before changing anything

Identify the exact equipment

Read the label on the gateway or its administration page and write down the provider name, model number, hardware revision, and firmware version. Also identify the access type: cable, DSL, fiber, or fixed wireless. A procedure for one model family can be wrong for another model sold by the same provider.

Search the provider’s current support documentation for that exact combination. If the setting is missing, greyed out, or not documented, ask the provider whether bridge mode or passthrough is supported on your service. Do not substitute a guessed VLAN ID, login, or port.

Check the services that may depend on the gateway

Before enabling anything, determine whether the gateway supplies telephone service, television, a provider-managed guest network, mesh nodes, or other features. Ask which functions remain available in the supported mode. For example, Verizon’s documented Internet Gateway procedure says its Wi-Fi radios turn off when IP Passthrough is enabled. That behavior should not be assumed for every provider.

  • Save any provider-supplied PPPoE username, password, VLAN ID, static-IP details, or other connection parameters.
  • Note which Ethernet port currently feeds any important wired device.
  • Keep the provider’s reset and bridge-mode reversal instructions available on a phone or another computer.

Some gateways lose their normal management address after bridging, so do not rely on being able to undo the change from the same browser session.

Bridge mode, IP passthrough, and double NAT

Arrangement Who routes the home network? Typical implications
Conventional bridge mode Your personal router The gateway’s routing and NAT functions are disabled or bypassed to the extent defined by the provider. Gateway Wi-Fi, LAN ports, or other services may change.
IP passthrough Usually your personal router, while the gateway still retains selected functions The provider forwards the public address or upstream traffic to a chosen device. Exact behavior, port selection, and retained services are provider-specific; the name alone does not prove it is identical to a transparent bridge.
Normal gateway plus a second router Both devices Usually creates double NAT. It can work for ordinary browsing but may complicate port forwarding, VPNs, gaming, and device-to-device discovery.

TP-Link explains the goal this way: “If you have a DSL modem router and a second router, to avoid double NAT, you can switch the modem router into Bridge mode.” Treat that as a configuration objective rather than a requirement for every household. Some people deliberately keep two routing layers for isolation, and some providers do not offer a true bridge.

Universal setup procedure

Use this workflow only as a framework. The gateway’s own instructions take precedence over the generic wording below.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Power and connect the equipment as it is now. Confirm that the gateway itself has service and that you can open its administration page. Do not begin by disconnecting every device; you may need the existing connection to recover from a mistake.
  2. Locate the provider-supported setting. In the gateway interface, look under Internet, WAN, Network Connections, Advanced networking, DSL, or a similarly named section. If the provider calls it IP Passthrough rather than Bridge, follow that provider’s description and selection rules.
  3. Apply the exact model and firmware procedure. Select Bridge, Modem-only, or the documented passthrough option. Enter a VLAN ID or other value only when the ISP specifies it for your service. Save the change and wait for the gateway to restart; do not interrupt power during the restart.
  4. Use the specified Ethernet port. Run an Ethernet cable from the gateway port named by the provider to the personal router’s WAN or Internet port. Port choice is not interchangeable in every implementation. Verizon’s Internet Gateway instructions, for example, specify LAN2 for IP Passthrough.
  5. Put the personal router in router mode. In its setup wizard, choose Router rather than Access Point or Bridge mode. NETGEAR’s installation guidance likewise tells users to place its router in router mode after enabling bridge mode on the ISP gateway.
  6. Enter the ISP connection method. Select automatic/DHCP when the provider uses it. Select PPPoE and enter the supplied credentials when required. Add VLAN tagging or a static address only according to the provider’s current instructions.
  7. Configure the personal LAN. Choose a private LAN range that does not duplicate another network you must reach, set a Wi-Fi name and password, and enable the router’s DHCP server unless your design specifically requires another DHCP server.
  8. Move client devices. Connect household equipment to the personal router’s Wi-Fi and LAN ports. Leave the gateway’s other ports unused unless the provider documents that they remain active for a particular service.
  9. Test before tidying cables. Confirm that the personal router reports an Internet/WAN address, that a wired client can browse, and that a wireless client can browse. Then test any work VPN, game console, cameras, voice service, or television service that matters to your household.

Provider and device examples

TP-Link DSL gateways

TP-Link’s April 18, 2025 support article covers listed VX220-G2v and VX420-G2 variants. After verifying the hardware revision and ISP requirements, its model-specific process is to open the web interface, go to the DSL WAN or DSL section, create or edit the Internet connection, choose Bridge, enter a VLAN ID if the ISP requires one, and save.

TP-Link AC1200 Gigabit Dual Band WiFi Router (Archer A6) | MU-MIMO Wireless Internet Router, 4 x Antennas, OneMesh and AP Mode, Long Range Coverage
  • Dual band router upgrades to 1200 Mbps high speed internet (300mbps for 2.4GHz plus 900Mbps for 5GHz), reducing buffering and ideal for 4K stream
  • Full Gigabit Ports - Gigabit Router with 4 Gigabit LAN ports, ideal for any internet plan and allow you to directly connect your wired devices
  • Boosted Coverage - Four external antennas equipped with Beamforming technology extend and concentrate the Wi-Fi signals
  • MU-MIMO technology - (5GHz band) allows high speeds for multiple devices simultaneously
  • Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home

Those menu names and the VLAN requirement apply to the listed variants and service conditions, not to every TP-Link gateway or every DSL provider. If your provider uses PPPoE, the personal router may need the PPPoE credentials after the gateway is bridged.

Verizon Internet Gateway

Verizon’s September 29, 2026 guide for the Internet Gateway describes IP Passthrough rather than assuming a universal transparent bridge. In the gateway’s Network Connections settings, enable IP Passthrough, allow the gateway to restart, and connect your personal equipment by Ethernet to LAN2.

Verizon says the gateway’s Wi-Fi radios turn off while passthrough is enabled. Connect wireless clients to your own router after the restart. These instructions are specific to the Verizon Internet Gateway described by Verizon; another Verizon device or service may expose different controls.

Motorola cable gateways

Motorola documents bridge-mode procedures by model. Follow the section matching the exact gateway rather than selecting a nearby model. Motorola also notes that some modem-only MB models are already bridge modems and therefore do not need a separate bridge-mode switch.

  • COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.

For supported gateway models, Motorola warns that a provider reset or firmware update can restore combined modem-router mode. If that happens, your personal router may suddenly sit behind NAT again, so recheck the gateway setting and the cable connection.

Rogers and other providers

Rogers publishes its own bridge-mode and third-party-router guidance. Use the current Rogers instructions for your gateway and plan, including any service-specific limits. Other providers may use passthrough, a support-side change, or no supported bridge at all. An absent menu is a reason to contact the ISP, not to improvise undocumented settings.

Configure the personal router correctly

Choose router mode, not access-point mode

Access-point mode is appropriate when the ISP gateway should remain the only router. It is not the normal choice when you have successfully bridged or passed through the gateway. In a bridge arrangement, router mode lets the personal device receive the upstream connection and provide the home LAN’s DHCP, NAT, firewall, and Wi-Fi.

Match the provider’s WAN requirements

  • DHCP/automatic IP: Select this when the provider supplies an address automatically after the gateway is bridged or passthrough is enabled.
  • PPPoE: Enter the exact username and password supplied by the ISP. A correct bridge setting cannot compensate for missing or incorrect credentials.
  • VLAN tagging: Enter the VLAN ID only when the provider specifies it for your service and router. DSL and fiber services can differ by region and account.
  • Static addressing or special options: Copy the provider’s values exactly, including gateway, DNS, or authentication settings when supplied.

If the router shows a private WAN address when the provider says it should receive the public address, check the selected gateway port, the passthrough device-selection setting, and whether the gateway actually restarted. Do not assume that every provider exposes a public address directly to the personal router.

Verify the finished installation

  • In the personal router’s status page, confirm that the WAN link is up and that it has an address, gateway, and DNS information appropriate to the ISP’s method.
  • On a wired client connected to the personal router, open several unrelated websites.
  • On a wireless client, verify that the new Wi-Fi name is used and that the old gateway network is no longer the active path.
  • Check local functions such as printing, file sharing, smart-home control, and casting.
  • Test work VPNs, online games, inbound services, cameras, voice, or television services that your household depends on.
  • Recheck after the gateway and personal router have both been powered off and restarted once. Some providers reprovision settings during a reboot.

Do not promise that the old gateway administration address will remain reachable. In some bridged configurations, management is available only through a provider-specific address, a dedicated port, or the ISP’s support channel.

Troubleshooting when it does not work

Symptom Likely checks
No WAN connection on the personal router Confirm that the gateway finished restarting, use the provider-specified Ethernet port, check the WAN cable, and verify DHCP versus PPPoE or another required method.
Router receives a private address or double NAT remains Check that the gateway is truly in bridge mode or that passthrough targets the personal router. Reboot the gateway first, then the personal router. Do not run the personal router in access-point mode unless that is intentional.
Wi-Fi disappeared This may be an expected side effect. Verizon documents that its Internet Gateway radios turn off during IP Passthrough. Use the personal router’s Wi-Fi or reverse the provider setting if gateway Wi-Fi is required.
DSL or fiber service fails after bridging Verify the ISP’s PPPoE credentials, VLAN ID, authentication type, and any required WAN tagging. Never guess a value from another provider or model.
Voice or television service stopped Check whether the provider requires the gateway to retain those services or whether a particular port must remain connected. Contact the ISP before changing more settings.
The gateway returned to router mode later Motorola notes that provider resets or updates can restore combined mode on supported models. Recheck the setting and ask the provider whether a remote update caused the change.
Cannot open the gateway’s admin page Use the provider’s documented management address or recovery procedure. If necessary, temporarily reconnect a computer according to the ISP’s instructions; do not factory-reset without knowing how to restore service credentials.

What you give up or change

Bridge mode changes the gateway from the center of your home network to an upstream access device. Depending on the provider and model, the change can disable gateway Wi-Fi, remove access to some LAN ports, alter management access, or affect guest networking, mesh features, voice, or television. The only reliable list is the one attached to your exact gateway and service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Your personal router now becomes the device you must maintain: update its firmware, protect its administrator account, configure its firewall, and troubleshoot its Wi-Fi. The ISP may support the gateway-to-line connection but decline to troubleshoot every setting on a third-party router.

How to choose a personal router

Choose a category rather than a model based on unsupported performance claims. The router should have an Ethernet WAN/Internet port, support the connection method your ISP requires, and provide enough LAN ports and Wi-Fi coverage for your home. Consider the number of simultaneous clients, wired backhaul or mesh support if needed, guest-network controls, VPN features, and the manufacturer’s update policy.

An Ethernet cable is required for the documented gateway-to-router link. Use a cable suitable for the port speeds involved; the bridge procedure itself does not increase the speed supplied by your ISP.

How to undo bridge mode safely

  1. Disconnect or power down the personal router if the provider’s recovery instructions require it.
  2. Use the gateway’s documented management method or the provider’s support channel.
  3. Disable Bridge or IP Passthrough and save the change.
  4. Wait for the gateway to restart fully.
  5. Restore the gateway’s recorded Wi-Fi and LAN settings, or reconnect the personal router in access-point mode if you still want to use its wireless coverage.
  6. Test Internet access and provider services before reconnecting every household device.

Keep the recovery notes with the gateway’s label and service credentials. A provider reset can erase custom settings, and a firmware update can change the available menu or restore the gateway’s combined mode.
