To free up RAM in Windows 11, first identify the applications using the most memory in Task Manager, close work you no longer need, reduce unnecessary startup and background activity, and restart if the system remains slow. Storage cleanup can recover disk space, but it cannot increase physical RAM. If your normal workload repeatedly exceeds the computer’s available memory, check whether the exact PC supports a RAM upgrade.
What “high memory usage” means in Windows 11
Random access memory (RAM), also called memory, is the computer’s short-term working space. Windows and open applications use it for data they need immediately. A browser with many tabs, an editor, a meeting application, and other open programs can all compete for that space.

Disk storage is different. An SSD or hard drive keeps files when the computer is turned off; RAM holds active working data while the system is running. Deleting temporary files or moving photos can help when the drive is nearly full, but those actions do not add installed RAM.

Quick decision guide: which fix addresses which problem?
| Intervention | Resource addressed | Reversible? | Possible trade-off | Restart needed? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Close an unneeded application or browser tab | RAM and the application’s active workload | Yes, by reopening it | Unsaved work can be lost if you close without saving | No |
| Disable an unnecessary startup app | Startup and recurring background load | Yes; re-enable it later | The app will not launch automatically after sign-in | Usually no; the next sign-in reflects the change |
| Set supported app background activity to Never | Background activity while the app is inactive | Yes; choose another setting later | Background notifications, syncing, or updates can stop | No |
| Restart Windows | Clears the current session and reloads needed services | Yes | You must save work and reopen applications | The action itself is the restart |
| Use Storage settings or Storage Sense | Disk capacity, not installed RAM | Some cleanup is recoverable only from recycle or backup locations | Files selected for removal may no longer be available locally | No |
| Install additional or replacement RAM | Physical memory capacity | Depends on the device and module design | Compatibility, maximum-capacity, and replaceability limits apply | Yes, after hardware work |
1. Find the applications using the most memory
Open the Processes view
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- If the compact view appears, choose the option to show more details.
- On the Processes tab, locate the Memory column.
- Review the applications near the top of that column. Give priority to programs you recognize and are not currently using.
Task Manager can also show CPU and disk activity. If memory use is modest while CPU or disk activity is the obvious bottleneck, closing RAM-heavy programs may not solve the slowdown.
Close work safely
Save documents and other work before closing anything. Exit browser tabs, launchers, editors, chat clients, virtual machines, or other applications you opened but no longer need. Closing a large application releases its active working data, although Windows may continue to use some memory for system operations.
Do not end an unfamiliar Windows process simply because its memory number is large. Ending a required system process can cause instability or make you lose work. Start with applications whose purpose you know, and use the application’s own Exit or Close command when available.
Check again after a change
After closing one or two unnecessary applications, watch the Memory column again. This confirms whether that application was contributing to the pressure. If the same program quickly grows back to a high level when you use it, the issue may be its workload or configuration rather than a one-time buildup.
2. Reduce the number of programs that start with Windows
Startup applications launch when you sign in. They can lengthen startup and continue running in the background, consuming memory even before you open your main work. Disable only programs that do not need to be ready immediately.

Use Windows Settings
- Open Settings.
- Go to Apps > Startup.
- Review the list of applications and switch off entries you do not need at sign-in.
Use Task Manager’s startup information
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Open the Startup apps tab.
- Review each entry’s Startup impact information.
- Disable an entry only after confirming what it does and that you do not need it immediately after signing in.
The startup-impact label helps you decide which entries to inspect first. It describes startup behavior; it is not a promise of a specific amount of RAM saved. A program that is useful during work may still be worth launching manually rather than automatically.
What not to disable casually
Leave security software, hardware utilities, accessibility tools, and work software enabled when you depend on them at sign-in. If you do not recognize an entry, identify the application first instead of treating its name or impact label as permission to disable it.

Some Windows 11 apps can run tasks while you are not actively using them. That can support syncing, updates, or notifications, but it also creates ongoing activity. Windows provides a per-app control for supported applications.
- Open Settings.
- Go to System > Power & battery > Battery usage.
- Find the app you want to review.
- Open More options > Manage background activity.
- Choose Never only when you can accept that the app will not continue background work while inactive.
With Never selected, the app may stop delivering background notifications, syncing data, or applying updates until you open it again. Use this setting for apps whose background behavior you do not need, not for every app listed. The control is not available in the same way for every application, so a missing menu does not necessarily indicate a fault.
4. Close browser tabs and app windows you are not using
Browsers can keep separate tabs, extensions, and web applications active. Close tabs for pages you no longer need, then exit browser windows that are not part of the current task. If you need the page later, save a bookmark or the page address before closing it.

Apply the same test to desktop applications: if you are not using a project, meeting, game, editor, or local server right now, close it after saving. Reopening one application when needed is often less disruptive than allowing many programs to remain active all day.
If one tab or application repeatedly consumes unusually large amounts of memory, close it and reopen it. If the behavior returns, check whether that program has its own settings, add-ons, or updates that affect its workload. Avoid downloading third-party “memory cleaners” solely because a process looks large; first use Windows’ built-in process information and remove the activity you understand.
5. Restart when the session remains sluggish
After closing unneeded programs, save your work and restart Windows if the computer is still slow. Microsoft includes closing unused applications and restarting among its general performance recommendations.
- Save documents and confirm that important work is synchronized or otherwise stored.
- Close applications you do not need.
- Open Start > Power > Restart.
- After sign-in, reopen only the programs needed for the current task.
A restart gives you a clean session. It does not increase the computer’s installed RAM, and it will not permanently fix a workload that routinely requires more memory than the device has. If the slowdown returns only after a particular application or set of tabs is opened, monitor those items in Task Manager rather than restarting repeatedly.
6. Keep disk cleanup separate from RAM troubleshooting
When the problem is low disk space, open Settings > System > Storage and review the categories consuming capacity. Storage Sense can automate appropriate temporary-file cleanup. These tools address the drive, not physical memory.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Use the right tool for the symptom
- RAM pressure: Task Manager’s Memory column, closing active applications, startup review, background-activity controls, and possibly a hardware assessment.
- Low disk space: Storage settings, Storage Sense, and deliberate removal or relocation of files.
- Unclear slowdown: Compare CPU, memory, and disk activity in Task Manager before changing settings.
Removing files can help Windows updates and applications that need free disk capacity, but it cannot turn storage space into additional RAM. Do not delete personal files merely to lower the Memory figure.
7. Decide whether your normal workload needs more RAM
If high memory use returns during ordinary work after you have reduced unnecessary applications and startup activity, consider whether the workload itself exceeds the device’s practical capacity. Microsoft describes RAM as enabling a device to do more at once and gives broad workload guidance: at least 4 GB for primarily web browsing, documents, or streaming; 8 GB for longer-term use; and 16 GB or more for photo or video editing and other high-performance work. These are general recommendations, not guaranteed minimum requirements for every Windows 11 device.
Check the exact PC before buying anything
- Find the manufacturer and complete model number.
- Check the manufacturer’s specifications or service documentation for the supported memory type.
- Confirm the maximum supported capacity.
- Determine whether the RAM is replaceable or soldered to the motherboard.
- Check how many memory slots are available and whether existing modules must be replaced.
Desktop towers often provide more upgrade flexibility than compact laptops, but the model documentation is decisive. Do not assume that a module fits because it is advertised as “DDR” memory, and do not buy a universal kit based only on the Windows 11 version. A compatible RAM upgrade is a conditional option, not a guaranteed solution for every slow PC.
When an upgrade is unlikely to help
More RAM will not correct a CPU bottleneck, a storage-device problem, an application defect, or a workload that is slow for another reason. Check Task Manager while reproducing the slowdown. If memory is not the resource under pressure, investigate the resource that is.

8. A repeatable workflow for high memory use
- Reproduce the slowdown. Note which applications and browser tabs are open.
- Open Task Manager. Use Ctrl + Shift + Esc and inspect Memory, CPU, and disk activity.
- Close recognized, unnecessary applications. Save first; do not end unfamiliar system processes.
- Recheck the list. Confirm whether memory use falls and whether another application becomes the main user.
- Review startup apps. In Settings > Apps > Startup or Task Manager’s Startup apps tab, disable only nonessential entries.
- Review background activity. For supported apps, use Settings > System > Power & battery > Battery usage > More options > Manage background activity, and choose Never only when lost notifications or syncing are acceptable.
- Restart once. Reopen only what the current task requires.
- Separate storage issues. If the drive is nearly full, use Settings > System > Storage or Storage Sense; do not expect that cleanup to increase RAM.
- Assess the workload. If the same workload repeatedly fills available memory, verify upgradeability and limits for the exact PC model.
Common mistakes and safer alternatives
Ending every process with a large number
Why it fails: Some processes are required by Windows or by software you are actively using. Ending them can cause crashes or lost work.
Safer approach: Close recognized applications through their normal controls, then investigate unfamiliar entries before taking action.

Disabling every startup entry
Why it fails: You may lose security, hardware, accessibility, or work-related functions at sign-in.
Safer approach: Use startup-impact information to prioritize review, and disable only programs you do not need immediately.
Setting every background app to Never
Why it fails: Apps may stop syncing or sending notifications that you rely on.
Safer approach: Apply the control selectively and test whether the lost background behavior matters.
Deleting files to “free RAM”
Why it fails: File cleanup affects disk capacity, not installed memory.
Safer approach: Use Task Manager for RAM pressure and Storage settings for low disk space.
Buying a random memory kit
Why it fails: The PC may use a different memory type, have a lower maximum capacity, or have non-replaceable RAM.
Safer approach: Check the complete model’s specifications and service documentation before purchasing.
What results to expect
Closing an active application or tab can reduce the memory consumed by that workload immediately. Disabling an unnecessary startup app mainly prevents that program from launching automatically at sign-in; the benefit depends on what the app would otherwise load. Restricting background activity reduces work while an app is inactive, but the trade-off is lost background notifications or updates.
A restart can make a session responsive again, but it is a reset rather than a capacity upgrade. Storage cleanup can restore disk headroom, while a RAM upgrade can increase physical capacity only when the computer supports it. Use the intervention that matches the resource shown in Task Manager and the symptom you are trying to fix.
