You can build useful app-store competitor intelligence without subscribing to a data vendor by collecting public listing details, comparing apps within the same storefront, and saving dated snapshots. This reveals how competitors position and update their apps—not their verified downloads, revenue, conversion rates, or market share.
What free app-store intelligence can—and cannot—tell you
Public product pages and catalog search can show what a potential customer sees: an app’s name, publisher, category, description, screenshots, visible price or in-app purchase cues, ratings, reviews, and release information when displayed. These are observations about a listing at a particular time and place, not proof of business performance.
Apple describes ratings and reviews as elements that appear on product pages and in search results, and notes that they may influence search rank. Its search experience can also include categories, editorial content, in-app events, and custom product pages, so a basic catalog result is not the whole discovery picture. Apple’s official documentation puts developer analytics and sales reporting in App Store Connect. Google’s Play Developer APIs likewise cover authorized developer-account operations, rather than a documented free feed of competitors’ performance. A repeatable workflow for free app intelligence
1. Define a comparable market slice
Before searching, note the country or storefront, the category or user problem, the search terms, and the date. Keep the storefront, language, and query consistent when comparing apps. Results and localized listing metadata can vary by country; Apple’s catalog search supports a country parameter. Apple’s archived iTunes Search API search documentation
2. Discover candidate apps
For Apple, the archived iTunes Search API documents public App Store catalog search and ID-based lookup. Its search construction uses parameters such as term, country, entity, and limit; the software media type and software-related entities are relevant to apps. The API returns JSON, which you can parse to retain app IDs and listing links for later checks. Apple describes the API as a way to search for store content: iTunes Search API overview, understanding search results, and search construction.

Apple also documents a Search Apps API for finding public apps by name or content provider and retrieving localized metadata. It appears in Apple Ads documentation, but that context should not be mistaken for open campaign access: Apple says campaigns are limited to apps owned by the organization. Apple Ads Search Apps API
For Google Play, inspect public listings in a browser and preserve the listing URL and package identifier. The official Android Publisher API documentation is oriented to developer-account publishing and management. The reviewed review-retrieval method requires Android Publisher authorization plus an app package name and review ID; it is not open competitor-review access. The sources cited here do not verify a broad unauthenticated official competitor-search endpoint. Android Publisher API · Google Play reviews.get method

3. Make a compact observation sheet
Use one row per app and keep the original listing link. Capture the storefront and observation date so later comparisons do not accidentally mix markets or time periods.
- App name, developer or publisher, category, and store ID or package name.
- Short and full descriptions, screenshots, and any preview video.
- Visible price, in-app purchase or subscription statements, and other monetization cues.
- Rating and review count as displayed, plus a few representative review themes.
- Version or update information if the listing shows it; note explicitly when a field is absent.
Compare the apps on audience and problem, promise and feature framing, creative presentation, monetization cues, review themes, and visible listing freshness. Do not infer actual installs, conversion, retention, or revenue from a listing or its reviews.

4. Repeat the same checks and log changes
Run the same queries weekly or monthly and save dated snapshots of the same fields. A change log can show shifts in wording, screenshots, displayed ratings and reviews, or visible release details. It cannot reconstruct historical downloads or rankings. Apple’s archived Search API documentation advises caching for large sites and gives an approximate limit of 20 calls per minute, explicitly subject to change; verify current operational constraints and applicable terms before automating around that figure. 5. Use account analytics for your own app
If the question is how your own app is performing, use App Store Connect’s analytics, sales reporting, customer reviews, and app-management tools for the developer account. Google Play’s developer APIs similarly support authorized operations for your own apps and reviews. These tools serve account owners; they are not substitutes for a public competitor-performance feed. App Store Connect · Google Play Developer API

How to avoid misleading conclusions
- Label each record with the storefront and date; do not compare listings captured in different markets as if they were identical.
- Separate visible facts from interpretation. “The listing says it includes a subscription” is observable; “the app earns substantial subscription revenue” is not.
- Do not treat search position, ratings, review counts, or listing changes as install or revenue estimates.
- For automated Apple catalog collection, remember that the documented rate limit is approximate, archived, and subject to change; cache appropriately and check current terms and behavior before relying on it.
- For Google Play, do not treat an authorized review endpoint as public access to competitors’ reviews or performance data.
