Treat unexpected calls, texts, emails, and links as untrusted; if your information or benefits appear compromised, use the right official recovery channel rather than responding to the person who contacted you.
Secure access to your my Social Security account
Start at SSA.gov and use Login.gov or ID.me
Go to SSA’s account creation page or type SSA.gov into your browser and navigate from there. SSA currently uses Login.gov and ID.me for sign-in and identity verification. Legacy SSA username sign-in ended June 7, 2025, so use one of those providers rather than an old username flow. SSA says account creation requires you to be at least 18 and have a valid email address. Its guidance describes Login.gov as suitable for most U.S. users and ID.me as available to users inside or outside the United States; either can provide access to my Social Security. Choose based on your circumstances and the provider’s current identity-proofing and authentication options, not on an assumption that one is inherently more secure. Turn on multifactor authentication
Use a supported multifactor authentication (MFA) method so a password alone is not the only barrier to access. Available methods vary by sign-in provider. SSA lists security keys, landlines, and backup codes among alternatives for people who do not want to use a mobile phone. Check your provider’s current instructions before choosing a method or buying a security key; SSA does not endorse a particular brand or model. - Use a unique email address for your account; SSA discourages sharing an account or email address.
- Keep your password private and do not reuse a password exposed in another service. Change it promptly if you suspect it has been exposed.
- For accounts created on or after September 18, 2021, contact information generally must be updated through the sign-in provider. Keep recovery details current there.
SSA says Login.gov and ID.me can help with password changes, contact details, MFA methods, and identity-proofing problems. SSA itself can block or unblock electronic access, deactivate an account, and provide phone identity verification for most users. If you are locked out, use the provider’s official support or SSA’s published contact options—not a caller or message offering to repair your account. SSA account help guidance

Recognize Social Security impersonation scams
Scammers may pretend to be SSA, another familiar institution, or a real employee. Caller ID can be spoofed, and official-looking images or names do not prove a contact is genuine. Watch for a made-up emergency or prize followed by pressure to act immediately.
- Threats of arrest, legal action, benefit suspension, or seizure of your bank account or other funds.
- Instructions to move money into a supposedly “protected” account, keep the matter secret, or stay on the phone while you do it.
- Requests for payment by gift card, prepaid debit card, wire transfer, cryptocurrency, precious metals such as gold, or cash sent through the mail.
- Unexpected requests for sensitive personal information through social media, email, or text message.
SSA says it will not ask for sensitive personal information through social media, email, or text. For an unexpected contact, do not click links or attachments, share information, or pay. End the conversation and reach SSA independently through its official website. Report Social Security-related scams to the SSA Office of the Inspector General (OIG).

Respond if your account or personal information may be compromised
If you can still sign in
- Use SSA.gov to reach my Social Security; do not use a link in a suspicious message.
- Change the password through Login.gov or ID.me if you think it was exposed, and review or update the provider’s recovery details and authentication methods.
- Check your account and benefit information for changes you did not make. If electronic access itself needs to be blocked or restored, contact SSA through its published help options.
- If other accounts used the exposed password, change those passwords too.
If a scammer took money or stole personal information
If money was taken, stop communicating with the person and block them. SSA advises reporting the crime to local police and following the FTC’s scam-recovery guidance. If personal information was stolen, secure or create your my Social Security account, change exposed passwords, and contact Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion about placing a fraud alert. Report identity theft at IdentityTheft.gov, which provides a recovery plan. SSA directs identity-theft cases to the FTC rather than handling them itself. If you cannot pass identity verification
A fraud alert on your credit report can affect identity proofing. SSA’s guidance says you can ask the identity services provider about removing the alert or arrange an appointment at a local Social Security office; it also says ID.me can be used without removing the alert. Report the problem to the right agency
The correct destination depends on what happened. Misuse of your identity and suspected wrongdoing in an SSA program are different issues:

Protect direct-deposit changes carefully
SSA reported on March 12, 2025, that approximately 40 percent of Social Security direct-deposit fraud was associated with someone calling SSA to change bank information. This is an SSA-published figure, not a general estimate of all Social Security fraud. The agency said bank-information changes required either two-factor authentication through my Social Security or in-person identity verification at that time.
