Protecting your privacy in an AI study app starts with checking what the specific service collects, how it uses and shares that information, how long it keeps it, and how you can access or delete it. Then share only what is needed for the learning task. If a school provides the app, its approval and the rules governing student information matter; a personally chosen app may be treated differently.
Start by identifying who provides the app
Find out whether the app is provided by your school, approved for school use, or chosen independently for personal study. Those are not interchangeable situations. The U.S. Department of Education’s guidance on online educational services addresses services provided to schools and distinguishes that use from a student’s personal-capacity use outside school.

If your school provides the tool, ask who reviewed it, what agreement or legal exception permits the use of student information, and whether the provider is limited to the school’s educational purpose. The Department of Education’s student privacy guidance explains that FERPA generally restricts disclosure of personally identifiable information from education records, subject to specified exceptions and conditions. FERPA is not a blanket guarantee for every app or every piece of information a student enters.

Read the privacy notice and terms before entering information
Use the current privacy notice and terms for the particular app, not a general description of AI tools. Look for clear answers to these questions:

- What information is collected? Check for account details, prompts, uploaded files, and any other categories the policy identifies.
- Why is it used? Determine whether the stated uses are limited to providing the study service or include other purposes.
- Who receives it? Look for disclosures to service providers or other third parties, and what those recipients may do with the information.
- How long is it kept? Find the retention rules for account data, prompts, uploads, and deleted material.
- How can you review or delete it? Check the process for access, correction, or deletion requests and who to contact if the process is unclear.
- What security information is provided? Look for an explanation of safeguards and a route for questions or complaints.
The Federal Trade Commission’s COPPA FAQ advises schools evaluating providers to ask about collection, uses, commercial purposes, review and deletion, security, and retention. These are useful questions for any privacy review; they do not establish what a particular AI app does.
Minimize what you put into prompts and uploads
Give the app the material it needs to help with the lesson, but remove details that are not necessary. Before submitting text, a photo, or a document, check for:

- Names, student ID numbers, grades, or school identifiers.
- Location details or other information that could identify you or someone else.
- Sensitive personal information and personal information about classmates, teachers, or family members.
- Education records belonging to another person, unless there is a clear need and you have authorization to share them.
For example, a question about a history concept usually does not need your full name, school, or a classmate’s grade. Replace identifying details with generic labels where possible. This is a practical data-minimization step, not a claim that any particular app has a privacy setting or will use the information in a particular way. UK Department for Education guidance on generative AI in education is specific to the UK, but also treats privacy as a consideration when using generative AI for education.
Check the app’s actual account and history controls
Review the settings available in the app you are using. If it offers controls for saved conversations, account details, or uploads, read what each control changes and whether it applies to existing data. Do not assume that removing a conversation from view deletes every retained copy: the service’s retention and deletion policy should explain what happens and how to make a formal request.

When the policy does not explain a control or deletion process clearly, ask the provider or, for a school-provided account, the school. A visible delete button alone does not answer how long other copies are retained.
Take extra care with children under 13 and school accounts
COPPA covers certain services directed to children or services with actual knowledge that they collect personal information from a child under 13. Its application depends on the service and circumstances, so the age threshold alone does not establish whether a specific app complies or what consent arrangement applies. The FTC’s COPPA FAQ and guidance for ed tech companies and schools explain that when a school authorizes use, the school’s authority is limited to educational use and benefit, not another commercial purpose.

If a child under 13 will use the service, ask a parent or the school to review the provider’s notice and the applicable consent arrangement before creating an account or uploading information. For school use, ask how the tool was approved and how a student or parent can request access to or deletion of information. The FTC puts the principle plainly in its consumer guidance: “Kids shouldn’t have to give up their privacy rights to do their schoolwork or go to class remotely.”

If you are choosing between services, use the same criteria for each rather than relying on a broad claim such as “private” or “safe.” FTC and Department of Education guidance supports comparing the following areas; the list is an evaluation framework, not a finding about any named app.
