To protect your privacy when using AI-powered search on Android, review your Google Account’s Search activity controls, limit the Google app’s access to device features you do not need, and delete existing AI Mode activity from the relevant history views. These are separate controls: switching off history does not make a search anonymous, Android permissions do not delete account data, and Gemini has its own activity settings.
Start with your Google Account’s Search activity controls
Google is gradually rolling out Search Services History and Personalized Recommendations. The labels and available options can differ by account, so use the controls you actually see. On your Android phone, open Settings, tap your Google Account management option, then go to Data & privacy and review the history settings. If Search Services History is available, review it and its media-saving option. If it is not, check Web & App Activity, which may still govern Search history and personalization.

Google says Search Services History can include activity across Search services, including searches, information from sites visited using those services, generative AI responses, general location, and media associated with interactions. Google groups Search, Maps, Shopping, Flights, Hotels, Translate, and News under these settings. The controls apply to the Google Account across devices signed in to it. If you turn off Search Services History, Google offers a choice to turn it off or turn it off and delete activity. Turning a history control off concerns activity saved to your account and the uses described in Google’s documentation; it does not mean Google cannot process a query to provide search results or that the request is anonymous. Review the on-screen wording before confirming.

Understand what Save Media does—and does not do
Save Media is a narrower choice within Search Services History. Turning it off stops future Search-service media from being saved to that history, but it does not turn off the history control itself. Google says previously saved media is not deleted by switching this setting off and may continue to be used to improve Google technologies. Delete saved items separately if you want them removed.
With Save Media off, other activity can still be saved, including text-based history, voice transcripts, and generative AI media responses. In other words, treat history saving and media saving as two distinct controls. Google explains the scope in Manage your saved media in Search Services History.
How do I delete AI Mode history?
In the Google app, open AI Mode history and delete an individual interaction or all AI Mode history using the available controls. Deletion there may not remove every related entry immediately: Google says some items can remain in My Activity for a time. Also, a query that starts in AI Overview and then continues in AI Mode can produce separate Search-history and AI Mode-history entries.

For a specific interaction, check both AI Mode history and your Google Account’s My Activity or Search history, and delete any matching entries you find. Do not assume one deletion action removes every record in every history view. Follow Google’s Android instructions for AI Mode history.
Limit what the Google app can access on your phone
Android permissions control whether an app can access device resources; they do not erase activity already saved to your Google Account or replace Search history settings. To review recent access, open Android’s Privacy Dashboard and check access to location, microphone, and camera. You can then review the Google app’s permissions in Android Settings; exact menu names vary by Android version and manufacturer.
- Location: Where available, choose approximate rather than precise location if the feature does not need precision.
- Microphone and camera: Deny access when you do not need voice or camera-based features. Supported devices may also offer system-wide camera and microphone toggles.
- Review access: Use Privacy Dashboard to see which apps accessed sensitive resources recently, then adjust permissions that are broader than you want.
Android describes its location controls as letting you “Choose which apps get your approximate location and which apps get more precise information.” See Android privacy settings and permissions. These controls limit app access on the device; they do not guarantee that a service cannot infer general location from other information.

If you use the Gemini app, review its settings separately
Gemini Apps Activity is not Search Services History. If you use Gemini, review Gemini Apps Activity and its connected-app and location settings independently. Gemini’s privacy notice describes information that may include what you say or share, files and screens, Gemini Live audio or video, connected-app information, device and permission data, and location. Google says the Gemini mobile app is hosted by the Google app, so Google app permissions are relevant to access such as camera, microphone, contacts, and location.

Google Safety Center states that Gemini Apps Activity auto-delete is set to 18 months by default and can be adjusted. That figure applies to Gemini Apps Activity, not AI-powered Search or Search history. See Google Safety Center’s Gemini activity controls.

Use AI search cautiously with sensitive information
Settings can change what activity is saved or what the app can access, but they are not a reason to submit sensitive material without considering how the service handles it. Avoid entering private documents, identifying details, or images unless you understand the relevant service’s settings and data practices. If a task can be completed without those details, leave them out.
