Look for the data collected, purpose, recipients, retention period, deletion controls, and any use for advertising, analytics, recommendations, or AI training. Virtual try-on tools do not all handle images the same way.
What to check before you upload
Start with the notice and consent screen attached to the specific app, retailer, and try-on feature. A general privacy policy may not explain how that particular feature handles an image. A camera-based experience may process live frames on your device, while another feature may transmit a selected photo to a provider. Do not infer the data flow from the words “virtual try-on.”

- What leaves your device? Look for whether the service receives a photo, live video frames, or only information needed to render a result.
- What data is created? The notice may cover the original photo, generated images, account identifiers, or measurements and features derived from the image, such as face geometry.
- Why is it used? Check whether the stated purpose is limited to producing your preview or also includes recommendations, analytics, product development, advertising, or model training.
- Who receives it? Look for named providers, vendors, or other recipients, and any stated storage location.
- How long does it remain, and how can you remove it? Check the retention period for both the photo and the generated result, whether you can delete them yourself, and whether account deletion also removes copies held by processors.
If the purpose, recipients, or retention are unclear and those details matter to you, do not upload. If the service offers a local-processing or no-upload option, compare it before proceeding.
What different try-on policies disclose
These examples show why a provider’s own notice matters. They are company statements, not independent audits, and they are not a ranking of services.

The examples differ in what they describe: some discuss selfie or face-geometry processing, one separates web, in-store, and hand-scan retention, and others specify automatic deletion or storage until user action. A stated deletion period is useful when comparing services, but it is not proof of how a system behaves in practice.
Why derived data and recipients matter
A photo may be accompanied by measurements or features derived from it. TRESemmé’s notice, for example, says Image Data may include face geometry, while also saying it does not use that data to recognize or identify a particular customer. That distinction matters: do not assume every photo-based try-on performs identity recognition, and do not assume a provider handles only the visible image.

Check which companies receive or process the image, not just the brand whose site or app you use. The examples above include vendors, Perfect Corp for Coty’s described biometric hand-scan processing, and Fashn for LetsTryOn image generation. A named provider is a disclosure to consider, not an endorsement.

What official guidance says about image storage
The Federal Trade Commission’s 2012 staff report, Facing Facts: Best Practices for Common Uses of Facial Recognition Technologies, discusses an eyeglass try-on example in which a user uploads a photo, a service locates the face and eyes, overlays glasses, and stores the image for later use. The staff report recommends reasonable security, a specified retention period, disposal when images are no longer necessary, clear information at upload about storage purpose and access, and deletion rights. It also says a materially different future use, such as advertising, should require affirmative express consent. Read the FTC staff report.

The FTC’s May 2023 announcement on its biometric policy statement says biometric technologies raise privacy and data-security concerns as well as potential bias and discrimination. It identifies issues such as unexpected collection or use and failure to evaluate third-party providers among factors relevant to its policy statement. The agency describes biometric information as data depicting or describing physical, biological, or behavioral traits or measurements relating to an identified or identifiable person’s body. This guidance does not establish that every photo-based try-on is unlawful or that every such service processes biometric identifiers. Read the FTC announcement.

If you have already uploaded a photo
- Find the exact service’s current notice. Use the privacy or help link in the try-on feature, app, or account rather than assuming another service’s rules apply.
- Use the available deletion control. Remove the photo and generated result if the service offers separate controls. If you want to stop further processing, look for a consent-withdrawal option or contact the service using its stated privacy channel.
- Check what account deletion removes. Confirm whether deleting your account also deletes uploaded images and results, and whether the notice explains deletion of copies held by service providers.
- Ask for deletion if the control is unclear. Identify the try-on feature and the image or result, and ask what data remains, for how long, and whether deletion covers processor copies. Available rights and procedures vary by service and jurisdiction.
The FTC’s staff report specifically recommends deleting stored photos when they are no longer necessary, including when a user deletes an account. Whether a particular provider’s account-deletion process removes every copy depends on that provider’s terms and implementation.
Make the decision on the exact flow
Before consenting, make sure you can answer three practical questions: what image or derived data is sent, who can access it and for what purpose, and when and how it can be deleted. If the service does not answer the questions that matter to you, choose not to upload or use a clearly explained alternative. Privacy notices describe a provider’s commitments; they are not independent verification of system behavior, and policies can change. Check the current notice and consent flow for the exact tool and your jurisdiction.
