You can protect privacy on an Echo Show by switching off its camera and microphone, limiting who can use Drop In, and reviewing Alexa voice-history controls. The exact camera options vary by model: some Echo Shows have a physical lens shutter, while the Echo Show 8 (2025 release) and Echo Show 11 (2025 release) also have a software Camera Access setting. Check your model before relying on a particular control.
Turn off the camera
Echo Show 8 (2025 release) and Echo Show 11 (2025 release)
On these models, Amazon documents an on-device software control. Open Settings → Privacy & Permissions → Camera Access, then turn off Camera. In the Alexa app, open Devices → select your Echo Show → Settings → Camera Settings. Amazon says the camera is enabled by default on these models. Menu wording can vary with the Alexa interface, including whether the device uses Alexa+ or the original Alexa interface. See Amazon’s instructions for Camera Access.

Turning off Camera Access affects camera-dependent features. Amazon lists Live View, Drop In video and Visual ID among functions that use the camera on these models. Audio communication may still be available, depending on the feature and device settings.
Echo Show models with a physical shutter
Amazon’s setup guides identify a camera shutter with an on/off slider on the Echo Show 5 (3rd Generation) and Echo Show 8 (3rd Generation). Closing it physically covers the lens, but does not mute the microphones. The shutter is not a universal Echo Show feature, so check the setup information for your exact generation rather than assuming your device has one.

Mute the microphone
Press the microphone button to disconnect the microphone. Amazon says a red light appears, and voice commands stop working until you switch the microphone on again. On screen models with a combined microphones-and-camera button, pressing it turns off both inputs; it does not offer independent microphone and camera control through that button. Amazon’s support page explains the behavior in Turn Your Echo Device’s Microphones On or Off.
If your model has a separate shutter, remember that closing it covers only the camera lens. For a stronger pause in device listening, use the microphone control as well.

Choose who can use Drop In
Drop In is an optional feature that starts an audio or video connection automatically when permission allows; it is not simply a request that you must answer. Review the setting for each Echo Show and the permissions for individual contacts.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- In the Alexa app, open Devices, select the Echo Show, then open its Communications settings and turn off Drop In for that device if you do not want it available there. Labels can differ by app version.
- Review Drop In permissions on applicable contact cards. Contact Drop In requires permission from both parties, according to Amazon’s How Does Drop In Work with Alexa?
- Decide whether Drop In should be available among household devices, named contacts, both or neither. Avoid leaving permissions enabled for people or devices you do not want to reach this Echo Show.
When someone drops in on a supported Echo device, Amazon says you hear an audio tone and see a visual indicator. You can end the connection on screen or say, “Alexa, hang up.” Supported video Drop Ins also have a privacy blur, and turning off video can leave the audio conversation active. See Amazon’s Alexa and Alexa Device FAQs for its description of Drop In and related controls.

Review and delete Alexa voice history
Camera and microphone buttons do not replace account-level voice-history controls. In the Alexa app, open the Alexa Privacy area and look for Review Alexa History to review or delete voice recordings associated with your account. You can also look for Alexa Privacy controls in Echo Show settings; menu locations may change over time.
Amazon says an audible or visual indicator signals when an Echo detects the wake word and streams audio. Its FAQ describes the recording indicators and history controls, but this is Amazon’s account of its own features, not an independent audit of device behavior.

Which controls should you use?
| Privacy choice | What it controls | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Close a physical camera shutter | Covers the lens on models that have a shutter, including the Echo Show 5 (3rd Generation) and Echo Show 8 (3rd Generation). | Does not mute microphones; availability varies by model. |
| Turn off Camera Access | Software camera access on Echo Show 8 (2025 release) and Echo Show 11 (2025 release). | Camera-dependent features such as Live View, Drop In video and Visual ID are affected. |
| Press the microphone button | Disconnects the microphone; a red light indicates it is off. | Voice commands do not work until it is turned back on. On combined-button screen models, camera and microphones switch off together. |
| Disable Drop In or narrow permissions | Limits automatic audio or video connections for a device or permitted contact. | Device-level settings and contact permissions are separate; check both where relevant. |
| Review Alexa voice history | Lets you review or delete recordings associated with your account. | Does not itself disable the camera, microphone or Drop In. |
Amazon’s cited support pages cover these examples, not every Echo Show generation. To decide which settings to rely on, confirm your model’s physical controls and available software menus, then choose how much access to keep for camera features and Drop In.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Call encryption depends on how Alexa is used
Amazon says default Alexa calls and Drop Ins between Alexa-enabled devices or the Alexa app are end-to-end encrypted. If Enhanced Features such as group Drop In are enabled, Amazon says calls are decrypted for cloud processing and re-encrypted. Calls to telephone numbers include a telephone-network segment that is not encrypted. This describes Amazon’s stated treatment of those call types; it is separate from the camera and microphone controls above.
