To protect your health data in a sexual health app, check what it collects and shares before signing up, enter only what you need, limit permissions and connected accounts, secure your device, and use the app’s account-deletion process when you leave. These steps reduce exposure but cannot guarantee privacy: an app may collect information in the background or retain data after you delete it. In the United States, HIPAA usually does not cover an app you choose and use independently.
Before installing, find out what the app will collect
Decide whether you need an app—and which details it needs
Start with the app’s purpose. Ask whether you need its features and whether you could keep the same information in a protected note or on paper with less disclosure. No storage method is risk-free, but an app may involve a provider, account, device permissions, analytics, or other data flows that a paper record does not.

Check the app’s privacy policy and the privacy information in its app-store listing before entering intimate details. Look for:
- What it collects, including information from your device, location, wearable, or connected health platform.
- Why it collects each type of information and whether it is used for advertising, analytics, research, or another purpose.
- Whether data is shared with vendors or other third parties, and what those parties may do with it.
- How long information is retained, whether encryption is described for data in transit and at rest, and what happens to backups or records kept for legal reasons.
- Whether you can export or delete your account and data, and how to make those requests.
The Federal Trade Commission recommends that health apps make a clear privacy policy available and explain their collection, use, sharing, and security practices. A policy is a description of the company’s practices, not proof that an independent party has audited them.

Look for unnecessary identity requirements
Consider whether the app requires identifying details that are not needed for its basic function. If you create an account, use a strong, unique password and turn on multifactor authentication if the app offers it. Do not assume that a health-focused design, a clinic-like name, or an app-store listing means a company is subject to HIPAA.
Limit what the app can learn while you use it
Share only useful information and permissions
Enter only details that help you use the feature you want. Avoid adding a full name, precise location, contacts, or unrelated health information unless there is a clear reason. HHS advises people to avoid unnecessary or randomly selected apps and to withhold location access unless it is needed.

Review the phone’s permissions for the app. Depending on the app and device, check location, contacts, photos, microphone, Bluetooth, notifications, and access to a health platform or wearable. Disconnect integrations you do not use. HHS’s phone guidance, last reviewed June 29, 2022, offers a starting point for reviewing app permissions on iOS and Android; device menus change across versions, and denying a permission can limit a feature.

Turn off ad personalization or cross-app tracking controls where available. Those controls may reduce some tracking, but they do not necessarily stop an app from collecting information inside its own service or sharing it under other settings or legal grounds.

Protect your phone and account from local exposure
Use a passcode, set the device to lock automatically, and consider biometric unlocking if appropriate for your circumstances. Hide sensitive notification previews on the lock screen, avoid sharing the device account, keep the operating system and app updated, and do not reuse passwords or follow untrusted links. These steps help protect information accessible through your device; they do not prevent app-side collection.
Turning off a permission does not make a phone invisible. HHS notes that a carrier may retain identifying network and cell-tower data. The strongest way to limit what a device can expose is to limit sensitive information sent to or stored through it.

Understand what privacy rules do—and do not—cover
HIPAA is not a blanket protection for consumer apps
HIPAA governs covered entities, such as health plans, most health care providers, and clearinghouses, and their business associates. HHS says that, in most cases, HIPAA does not protect health information a person enters into an app for personal use or information stored on a personal phone or tablet. An important exception is an app provided to a person by a covered entity or its business associate. Ask who provides the app and what privacy rules govern the relationship rather than relying on a “HIPAA compliant” label.

The FTC explains that health information can include data that conveys or enables an inference about health. Browsing, location, purchase information, app activity, device identifiers, and wearable data can help connect an otherwise opaque record to a person or health concern. A record does not have to contain an explicit diagnosis to be sensitive.

The FTC may have a role outside HIPAA
The FTC Act prohibits unfair or deceptive practices, including practices that contradict a company’s privacy promises. The FTC’s Health Breach Notification Rule applies to specified vendors of personal health records, related entities, and service providers that are not covered by HIPAA. The FTC’s 2024 amendments clarified the rule’s application to health apps and similar technologies; they did not make every app subject to HIPAA or mean every incident is a legally reportable breach. Which rules apply depends on the organization and how the data moves.
Reproductive-health privacy rules have a narrower scope
HHS’s regulatory initiatives page reports that a June 18, 2025 court order vacated most of the 2024 HIPAA Privacy Rule to Support Reproductive Health Care Privacy. HHS said the remaining Notice of Privacy Practices modifications were undisturbed, with compliance due February 16, 2026. This account describes the status reported on that HHS page; legal rules can change. The rule concerns HIPAA-regulated entities and does not turn ordinary consumer-app data into HIPAA-protected data. State and non-U.S. protections vary, so do not assume the same rules apply everywhere.
When you stop using an app, delete the account—not just the icon
- Find the app’s account or data deletion process. Follow the provider’s official instructions; uninstalling the app alone may leave the online account and stored information in place.
- Check what deletion covers. Review the provider’s explanation of what it deletes, how long the process takes, and whether backups or records retained for legal obligations are excluded.
- Disconnect related services. Revoke the app’s phone permissions and disconnect health platforms, wearables, and linked accounts. Check separately whether information remains with a connected platform or provider.
- Keep a record of the request. Save the confirmation and any relevant policy or notice so you can follow up if the provider does not complete the process as described.
If you suspect a privacy problem or breach
Save the app’s policy and any relevant notices, then contact the provider through its official support channel. You may also consider reporting deceptive or unfair practices to the FTC. The FTC says some non-HIPAA health apps are covered by its Health Breach Notification Rule, including in certain cases involving unauthorized disclosure of identifiable health information. Whether a particular incident is covered or legally reportable depends on the facts; not every privacy concern qualifies as a reportable breach.
What earlier app studies can—and cannot—tell you
A 2024 paper by Cao, Laabadli, Mathis, Stern, and Emami-Naeini reported earlier findings that 61% of 23 popular women’s health apps allowed location tracking and 87% shared collected data with third parties. The authors also reported earlier research finding that 30% of period-tracking apps did not display a privacy policy. These are historical findings discussed in that paper, not a current audit or a measure of every sexual health app available today. Check the specific app’s current disclosures rather than treating an older percentage as a verdict on it.
