To reduce the risk of an AI agent making a purchase you did not intend, secure the accounts it can reach, limit its payment permissions, require approval where available, and monitor transactions. If a charge appears, first determine whether it came from an agent using permission you granted or from someone who gained access to your account; the steps to contain those two problems differ.
How can an AI agent make an unwanted purchase?
There are two main possibilities. An agent may have used payment authority you previously granted—for example, permission to shop without asking you at checkout. Or someone may have taken over an account, payment credential, or connected service and used it without your consent. A familiar-looking agent purchase can still exceed your intent; an unfamiliar purchase can point to account compromise.

Before revoking access or disputing a charge, identify the account, agent, merchant, and payment method involved. Check the agent’s activity or order history, the merchant receipt, and the relevant billing page. Look for an active subscription, a purchase by another authorized user, or a household member with access to the card. OpenAI’s guidance for unknown ChatGPT or API credit charges likewise advises checking invoices and considering whether someone else with card access made the charge (OpenAI’s guidance on unexpected charges).

Secure the accounts an agent could reach
Protect the accounts that could reset, authorize, or fund the agent account: start with email, banking, credit-card, payment, shopping, and AI accounts. Use a unique password for each. Turn on two-factor authentication (2FA), choosing an authenticator app or a supported security key over SMS when practical. The FTC explains that authenticator apps are less exposed to SIM-swap attacks than text messages and describes security keys as the strongest commonly available second-factor method (FTC: How to protect your personal information).

A security key helps protect sign-in where a service supports it. It does not limit an agent’s spending or prevent a purchase the agent is already authorized to make. Before buying a key, check whether each important email, financial, shopping, and AI service supports it.
Limit what the agent is allowed to buy
Review the agent’s connected apps, active sessions, saved payment methods, and purchase permissions. Remove connections you no longer use. There is no single revocation menu shared by all services, so use the relevant service’s own account and security settings.

Where offered, choose controls that narrow the agent’s authority: require explicit approval before checkout, restrict eligible merchants, set an amount limit, or use an agent-specific payment credential. Check what the control actually covers. A sign-in security setting is not a purchase limit, and a notification after an order is not an approval step.

Visa describes Intelligent Commerce as a system being developed and deployed, not a control every cardholder can assume is active. Its developer information describes agent-bound tokenized credentials, user authentication for agent instructions, and controls intended to keep payment actions aligned with those instructions; availability may vary by market (Visa Intelligent Commerce). Visa’s Trusted Agent Protocol is also in development and deployment. It is intended to let merchants verify an agent’s identity and transaction-specific authorization, not to provide a consumer setting that is necessarily active on a card (Visa Trusted Agent Protocol).
OpenAI’s September 29, 2025 Instant Checkout announcement describes a specific flow in which users confirm each step and encrypted payment tokens are authorized for particular merchants and amounts with user permission. The merchant accepts or declines the order, processes payment through its provider, and handles fulfillment and support. Treat those as details of that announced flow—not as guarantees about every AI agent or checkout service (OpenAI’s Instant Checkout announcement).

Turn on alerts and check account activity
Enable useful transaction alerts from your bank or card issuer, such as internet-purchase notifications or a threshold that suits your spending. Alerts help you spot activity; they do not stop an agent from completing a purchase or guarantee that every transaction will trigger a notification. Visa says its near-real-time alerts apply to selected eligible transactions, depend on issuer availability, and cover transactions routed through Visa (Visa Purchase Alerts).
Review payment activity and agent history often enough to recognize an order you did not expect. Do not assume that a network alert, token, or agent protocol settles a disputed charge: the service’s and payment provider’s processes still apply.

What to do if an agent made a purchase you did not approve
- Identify the charge. Check the transaction details, agent activity, merchant receipt, and billing page. Rule out an active subscription, another authorized user, or a household member before deciding it was unauthorized.
- Contain possible account compromise. If someone else may have accessed an account, change its password, enable or reset 2FA, sign out other sessions, and revoke connected-app access where the service allows it. Secure the linked email account too. OpenAI’s guidance says to complete security steps if an account was compromised (OpenAI’s guidance on unexpected charges).
- Contact your bank or card provider promptly. Use the official app, the number on your card, or contact details on a statement—not a link in an unexpected message. Ask whether to freeze or replace the card or payment token, and how to report or dispute the charge. The CFPB advises contacting the provider immediately about suspected suspicious activity. Its debit-card timing and liability guidance is US-specific, so follow the rules and deadlines that apply where you live (CFPB: What to do about a charge you did not make).
- Use the service’s reporting channel as well. For an unfamiliar ChatGPT or API credit charge, OpenAI directs users to its Fraudulent Activity webform and to select “Report unauthorized activity involving my account.” Contact your bank as well when appropriate (OpenAI’s guidance on unexpected charges).
- Keep records. Save receipts, dates, notification emails, and case numbers. They can help when following up with the merchant, service, or payment provider.
Keep payment card details out of chat prompts
Do not paste payment-card details into an AI conversation or upload them in a document or GPT. OpenAI says not to enter cardholder data—including card numbers (PANs), security codes (CVVs/CVCs), or PINs—into ChatGPT inputs, files, or GPTs. For OpenAI billing, submit payment details through its designated secure payment pages (OpenAI’s financial-data guidance).
