Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallUse the least Aadhaar information a legitimate service will accept. When available, choose UIDAI’s Masked Aadhaar or Virtual ID (VID) instead of exposing the full number; obtain documents and generate credentials only through official UIDAI channels; lock biometrics or Aadhaar when the resulting authentication limits fit your situation; and regularly check authentication history and service notifications.
Before sending anything, verify who is asking, why it is needed, whether a lower-disclosure option is accepted, and how the recipient will store and use it. A digitally signed, password-protected e-Aadhaar helps establish authenticity and protects the file in transit, but it cannot control what a recipient does after receiving a copy.

| Option | What it changes | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Masked Aadhaar | Replaces the first eight digits with “xxxx-xxxx” and displays only the last four. | It remains an identity document containing other personal information, and acceptance depends on the recipient. |
| Virtual ID (VID) | Provides a 16-digit token that can be used instead of the Aadhaar number for supported authentication. | Not every service is established as accepting VID; confirm before relying on it. |
| Biometric lock | Blocks fingerprint, iris and face authentication while enabled. | You must temporarily unlock it for a biometric transaction, and a registered mobile number is essential for the service. |
| Aadhaar lock | Restricts authentication using Aadhaar and related identifiers across authentication modalities. | It can interrupt a transaction you expect to make; check current UIDAI unlock options first. |
| Authentication history and notices | Lets you review recorded authentication activity and receive information about certain offline-verification events. | Do not assume the history records every way a copy may have been shared offline. |

1. Check the request before disclosing anything
Verify the service and the purpose
Reach the organisation through an address or phone number you already trust, rather than a link in an unsolicited SMS, email or messaging-app post. Check the domain, app publisher and sign-in screen. A genuine-looking logo is not proof that a request is legitimate.
Ask the requesting team to state exactly what it needs: an Aadhaar number, an identity document, an authentication transaction, or only a confirmation of a few details. The fact that a service asks for Aadhaar does not by itself establish that it is entitled to a full copy in every situation. Whether a particular private provider may require Aadhaar or must accept an alternative depends on the provider and the applicable legal context.
Ask about lower-disclosure choices
Before preparing a document, ask whether the service accepts:
- Masked Aadhaar instead of a document showing all 12 digits;
- VID for an authentication flow that supports it;
- an on-screen UIDAI authentication or offline-verification process rather than a retained photocopy; or
- another officially accepted identity document.
Get the answer from the service’s verified support channel. Do not assume that a staff member, website or app accepts VID merely because UIDAI provides it.
2. Use Masked Aadhaar when a document is genuinely needed
What “masked” means
UIDAI defines Masked Aadhaar as an Aadhaar document in which the first eight digits are shown as “xxxx-xxxx” and only the last four digits remain visible. It reduces exposure of the number; it does not make the document anonymous. The file can still contain your name, photograph, date of birth, address or other identity information, depending on the version.

Download the official version
Use UIDAI’s official online services or app to obtain the masked file. Do not cover digits with an image editor or create a homemade crop that could misrepresent the document. Select the masked option provided by UIDAI so the recipient can see that the format is intentional and official.
Check acceptance before sending
Some workflows require a full number or use document scanning that does not accept masking. If the recipient will not accept the masked version, pause and ask why the full number is required, how long it will be retained, who can access it and how it will be deleted. Do not send a full copy merely because it is the quickest option.

UIDAI describes VID as a revocable, 16-digit token that can replace the Aadhaar number in supported authentication. It is designed to let an authentication provider receive a substitute identifier rather than your underlying Aadhaar number.
- Open UIDAI’s current My Aadhaar or other official UIDAI service page by typing the address yourself.
- Choose the VID generation or retrieval service and complete the requested verification using your registered contact details.
- Give the VID only to a provider whose authentication flow explicitly supports it. Never send a VID to an unsolicited contact that asks you to “activate” or “verify” it.
- Keep the transaction confirmation and note which organisation used the VID. If the service instead asks for the full Aadhaar number, stop and decide whether that separate request is justified.
VID is not a universal replacement for every document or every form of identity verification. Its usefulness depends on the provider’s technical integration and current instructions.
4. Download and handle e-Aadhaar safely
UIDAI describes e-Aadhaar as password protected and digitally signed. Those properties help protect the downloaded file and support its authenticity, but they do not impose controls on a recipient after you share a copy.

Protect the download
- Download from UIDAI’s official website or app, not from a forwarded attachment or third-party “Aadhaar download” page.
- Use a device with current operating-system and browser security updates, a screen lock and reputable anti-malware protection.
- Save the file in a private, access-controlled location. Remove duplicate copies from shared folders, public computers and messaging-app media folders.
- Do not send the PDF and its password in the same message. Give the password through a separate, verified channel only when the recipient genuinely needs the file.
- After the purpose ends, ask the organisation to delete its copy and remove your local copy from downloads, email trash and cloud recycle bins if you no longer need it.
A password-protected PDF is not a substitute for checking the recipient. Once you disclose the password and file, the recipient can copy, forward or store the contents.
5. Choose biometric and Aadhaar locking deliberately
Biometric lock
UIDAI says biometric locking covers fingerprint, iris and face authentication. While enabled, those biometric modes cannot be used until you unlock them. A registered mobile number is essential for the service.
Use biometric locking if you rarely need biometric authentication and can plan an unlock before a legitimate transaction. Keep in mind that an urgent bank, telecom or government transaction may fail while the lock is active. Unlock only through an official UIDAI channel, complete the intended transaction, and re-enable the lock when appropriate.
Aadhaar lock
Aadhaar locking is broader: UIDAI describes it as restricting authentication against Aadhaar and related identifiers across modalities. The regulations provide for authentication using VID when Aadhaar is locked, but you should check the current instructions and the provider’s supported flow before enabling it.
Do not turn on Aadhaar lock immediately before travel, a deadline-driven service request or another activity that may require Aadhaar authentication. Record how to unlock it through UIDAI and ensure your registered mobile number works.

What the regulations say about temporary biometric unlocking
“An Aadhaar number holder shall be allowed to temporarily unlock his biometrics for authentication, and such temporary unlocking shall not continue beyond the time period specified by the Authority or till completion of the authentication transaction, whichever is earlier.”
This sentence appears in UIDAI’s consolidated Aadhaar Authentication and Offline Verifications Regulations, 2021. It describes a time-limited control, not a guarantee that every provider’s app will implement the same screen or timing.
6. Review authentication history and notifications
Use the recorded history as an early-warning check
UIDAI lists authentication history as a resident service. Review entries periodically, especially after using a new bank, telecom, government or other digital service. Check the date, time, requesting entity and authentication result against your own activity.
Authentication history is not a complete log of every disclosure. The reviewed UIDAI material does not establish that it records every offline sharing of a photocopy, scan or e-Aadhaar file. Treat it as a useful transaction check, not as proof that no other copy exists.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

The authentication and offline-verification regulations address notification or acknowledgement for offline checks. Read UIDAI or service notifications rather than dismissing them as routine. If an unfamiliar event appears, save the date, time, reference number and requesting entity before contacting anyone.

Respond to an unfamiliar entry
- Do not click a link in the alert. Open UIDAI by entering its address yourself.
- Capture the details you may need for a complaint or investigation.
- Contact UIDAI through a verified channel and separately contact the named service using its official website or app.
- Change affected account passwords, revoke unknown sessions and ask the service whether it retained or disclosed your Aadhaar data.
- If money, a SIM, benefits or another account is at risk, contact the relevant bank, telecom operator or government department immediately through its published emergency channel.

Store a PVC card or printout in a secure place and carry it only when needed. A basic sleeve or document holder can prevent bending, stains and casual viewing, but it is not a control for digital authentication and does not prevent a recipient from copying information. Do not treat a sleeve as protection against electronic misuse.
Photographing a card for convenience also creates another digital copy. If you must keep a scan, use encrypted device storage, a strong device passcode and a clear deletion date.

8. A practical decision sequence for common situations
Opening or updating a bank account
- Confirm the request inside the bank’s official app, branch or verified website.
- Ask whether the bank can authenticate through VID or an on-device UIDAI flow.
- If a document upload is required, offer Masked Aadhaar first and confirm the bank’s retention and deletion policy.
- Do not email a full, unprotected PDF to an address supplied in an unsolicited message.
Getting a SIM or changing telecom details
- Use an official store or verified telecom app.
- Ask which identity method and document format the process accepts before unlocking biometrics.
- Unlock biometric authentication only for the transaction if that is the chosen method, then lock it again when practical.
Using a government portal
- Check that the address is the department’s official domain and that the connection is secure.
- Read the consent, purpose and retention text before submitting.
- Prefer a UIDAI-supported authentication or VID flow over uploading a reusable full-number copy when the portal offers that choice.
Sending a copy to an employer, landlord or other private organisation
- Ask why Aadhaar is needed and whether another identity document is acceptable.
- Confirm who can access the copy, how long it will be retained and how it will be destroyed.
- Use Masked Aadhaar only if the recipient confirms acceptance, and add no unofficial edits or annotations that could make the document misleading.
Common mistakes and safer corrections
- Sending the full number by default: pause and ask whether Masked Aadhaar or VID is accepted.
- Trusting a message because it contains personal details: independently open the organisation’s official channel.
- Unlocking biometrics and forgetting to relock: treat unlocking as a transaction-specific action and set a reminder to restore the lock.
- Assuming a lock makes every service work through VID: confirm that the particular provider supports VID before locking Aadhaar.
- Believing authentication history proves no disclosure occurred: remember that offline sharing may not appear there.
- Sending the PDF and password together: separate the channels and remove unnecessary copies afterward.
- Editing an Aadhaar image yourself: download UIDAI’s official masked version instead.
- Buying a sleeve as a digital-security solution: use it only for physical convenience; it does not block electronic access.
Monthly Aadhaar privacy checklist
- Review authentication history for entries you do not recognise.
- Check that your registered mobile number is active and under your control.
- Delete stale e-Aadhaar files from shared devices, old email threads and cloud folders.
- Review which organisations still retain copies and ask about deletion where the purpose has ended.
- Keep biometric or Aadhaar locking aligned with your actual need for authentication rather than leaving a lock enabled without knowing how to recover.
- Update your phone and browser, and use a screen lock and unique account passwords.
- Bookmark or type UIDAI’s official services instead of relying on links received in messages.
Limits of what these controls can do
Masked Aadhaar reduces the number exposed; it does not remove the identity information printed on the document. VID reduces direct number disclosure only where the provider supports it. Biometric and Aadhaar locks can prevent expected transactions until you unlock them. Authentication history can reveal recorded events but cannot prove that nobody retained an offline copy. Password protection and digital signatures support file security and authenticity, but they cannot govern a recipient’s later handling.
Use the controls together: verify the request, disclose the minimum accepted information, use official UIDAI channels, lock only when the trade-off is acceptable, and inspect activity afterward. For current service names, app options and unlock steps, consult UIDAI’s official pages before each important transaction.
