How to Protect Virtual Machines and Containers Together in Kubernetes

Secure a shared Kubernetes environment for VMs and containers with layered API, workload, network, isolation, data-protection, and recovery controls.

Protect a mixed Kubernetes cluster by securing the control plane and identities, applying least-privilege controls to Pods, restricting network paths, protecting data and backups, and choosing stronger runtime or node isolation where the trust boundary calls for it. These controls address different risks: a VM guest boundary does not replace Kubernetes API, node, storage, or network security. Kubernetes guidance is a foundation, not a substitute for the current documentation for your VM operator, distribution, runtime, storage system, and network plugin.

What does “together” mean for your cluster?

Before choosing controls, map who shares what. Kubernetes multi-tenancy can mean different teams sharing a cluster, or workloads with different trust levels sharing nodes, networks, storage, and control-plane services. The isolation needed depends on the use case; a namespace is useful for organizing and scoping access, but should not automatically be treated as a hard security boundary. See the Kubernetes multi-tenancy guidance.

  • Which people and automation identities can create, update, or inspect workloads?
  • Can VM users access the Kubernetes API, and what permissions do they need?
  • Do VM and container workloads share nodes, network paths, persistent storage, or administrative teams?
  • Which workloads handle sensitive data or have compliance requirements that call for stronger separation?

This map determines whether namespace-level controls are sufficient, or whether separate nodes, networks, or virtual control planes are warranted.

How should you secure cluster access and identities?

Start with the Kubernetes API and the identities that can affect it. Use appropriate authentication and authorization, grant RBAC permissions only for required tasks, and protect kubelet endpoints. Keep workload service accounts distinct; do not mount API credentials into a workload unless it needs them. Kubernetes’ cluster security guidance also makes extensions and integrations part of the review: check requested permissions before installation, especially broad access to Secrets or permission to create Pods in privileged namespaces.

These permissions matter in a mixed cluster because a VM operator and its integrations may act through Kubernetes resources. Review their actual permissions and the identities that use them rather than assuming the guest operating system is the only relevant administrative surface.

Which controls belong on container workloads?

For container Pods, use the Kubernetes application security checklist as a baseline. Apply a suitable Pod Security Standard and configure each workload for least privilege:

  • Set runAsNonRoot: true and use a least-privileged user and group.
  • Set allowPrivilegeEscalation: false; do not run a container in privileged mode.
  • Use readOnlyRootFilesystem: true when the application is compatible.
  • Grant only the Linux capabilities the workload actually needs.
  • Scan images before deployment and validate image signatures.

These are Pod and container controls, not replacements for hardening a VM guest operating system or the virtualization layer. VM-specific settings depend on the selected implementation.

How should you choose an isolation boundary?

Use the workload’s sensitivity, trust context, compatibility needs, hardware or device requirements, operational capacity, and resource constraints to select an isolation level. Kubernetes supports RuntimeClass for selecting a different runtime configuration. Its application checklist points to sandboxing approaches such as gVisor or Kata Containers for sensitive workloads, and mentions confidential VMs for high-trust environments. These are options, not a universal ranking or a guarantee for every workload.

The Kubernetes project states: “The Kubernetes project does not recommend a specific container runtime, and you should make sure that the runtime(s) you choose meet your information security needs.” Read that in the context of its Cloud Native Security and Kubernetes guidance: runtime selection is one part of a broader security design.

FortiGate-60F Network Security Appliance Plus 1 Year FortiGuard Unified Threat Protection (UTP) and FortiCare Premium (FG-60F-BDL-950-12)
  • HARDWARE PLUS SECURITY SERVICES: FortiGate-60F Firewall Appliance bundled with 1 year of FortiCare Premium and FortiGuard Unified Threat Protection.
  • UNIFIED THREAT PROTECTION (UTP): Secures against advanced online threats with comprehensive web filtering and anti-botnet technologies.
  • OPTIMIZED FOR MEDIUM-SIZED BUSINESSES: Tailored for businesses needing robust security without the infrastructure of larger enterprises.
  • RELIABLE CUSTOMER SUPPORT: FortiCare Premium ensures high-quality support and service continuity.
  • EFFECTIVE PROTECTION: Employs advanced filtering technologies to safeguard against sophisticated threats.

For workloads with different trust contexts, consider placing them on separate nodes when the threat model justifies it. Stronger sandboxing or node separation can bring compatibility, capacity, policy, and operational costs. A VM guest boundary is only one layer; it does not remove risks involving the cluster API, nodes, storage, networks, or operator permissions.

Are namespaces or virtual control planes right for tenancy?

Namespaces and virtual control planes address different tenancy needs. Kubernetes describes namespaces as well-supported and comparatively lightweight; virtual control planes can provide isolation for cluster-wide API resources, but require additional resources and management. Neither choice by itself protects data-plane traffic or storage.

Approach What it helps isolate What remains to secure Operational trade-off
Namespaces Organize workloads and scope many Kubernetes resources and permissions within a shared cluster. Node, network, and storage risks still require appropriate controls; a namespace is not automatically a hard security boundary. Kubernetes describes namespaces as comparatively lightweight and well-supported.
Virtual control planes Can isolate cluster-wide API resources for tenants. Data-plane isolation, including workload traffic and storage, still needs separate protection. Additional resource use and management complexity compared with namespaces.

Choose based on the required API and resource separation, and pair either model with data-plane protections appropriate to the threat model. The Kubernetes multi-tenancy documentation discusses these approaches and their limits.

How do you limit network and storage exposure?

Restrict workload traffic

Use NetworkPolicy to allow expected Pod traffic and deny other paths where appropriate. First confirm that the cluster’s installed network plugin enforces NetworkPolicy; writing a policy does not provide enforcement if the networking implementation does not support it. If the threat model calls for stronger separation, consider node-level segmentation or separate networks.

Protect different kinds of data separately

Protect Kubernetes API objects with encryption at rest where appropriate. That is distinct from encrypting application data on persistent volumes: use the storage integration or application controls for volume data, and authenticate connections to network storage. Kubernetes’ cluster security guidance covers cluster-side security considerations; exact storage settings depend on the backend.

Backups are another separate path. Encrypt them and verify that they can be restored. A successful backup job alone does not demonstrate that recovery will work.

How should you monitor activity and prove recovery?

Kubernetes audit logging records a chronological sequence of security-relevant cluster actions. Protect the audit logs and the monitoring chain that collects and alerts on them so they remain useful during an incident. Pair logging with a recovery process that has been tested through restore exercises, rather than treating backup creation as proof of recoverability. See the Kubernetes Security documentation.

What must be verified for your VM platform?

General Kubernetes recommendations do not establish exact configuration for every distribution, VM operator, runtime, network plugin, or storage backend. Identify the actual components in your deployment and use their current official documentation for implementation-specific settings.

  • VM manifests and operator-specific security settings.
  • Guest OS patching and access controls.
  • Operator RBAC permissions and the identities that exercise them.
  • Live migration behavior and its network and authorization requirements.
  • Storage snapshots, backup integration, and restore behavior.
  • Runtime, network-policy enforcement, and distribution-specific defaults.

Do not apply container Pod security fields as though they harden a VM guest or hypervisor. Confirm behavior against the documentation for the Kubernetes release and the specific VM and infrastructure components you run.
