To limit what an AI agent can read on your Mac, give it access only to the files or folder its task needs, avoid granting Full Disk Access unless essential, and review its permissions in System Settings > Privacy & Security. macOS sandboxing can restrict an app, but the protection depends on how that app is configured and what access you approve. FileVault protects data when it is stored offline; it does not block an authorized app from reading files available to your logged-in account.
How do I stop an AI agent from accessing my files on a Mac?
Start with the task, not the agent’s request: decide which documents it actually needs. If the app supports selecting files or a working folder, provide only that material rather than your whole home folder or drive. Keep sensitive files outside the selected work area, and do not grant broader access just to make setup easier.

- Choose a limited work area. Put only the documents needed for the task in a dedicated folder, or select individual files if the app offers that option.
- Decline unnecessary broad permissions. In particular, do not enable Full Disk Access for convenience. Grant it only if the app’s essential function genuinely requires it and you accept the wider access.
- Review what macOS has allowed. Open System Settings > Privacy & Security and inspect the relevant privacy permissions. The exact permissions shown depend on the app and macOS version.
- Remove access when the task is done. Revisit the same settings and revoke permissions the app no longer needs. Also remove sensitive documents from its working folder if they should not remain available to it.
These are general macOS controls, not a guarantee that every agent is restricted in the same way. An app’s sandboxing, entitlements, launch method, and permissions you grant all affect its effective access. Apple explains that sandboxed apps can work with user-selected documents and declared capabilities, while an app’s own sandbox container is available to that app. Apple’s App Sandbox documentation describes the model.

What does macOS sandboxing protect?
App Sandbox is an operating-system access boundary: it limits which files and other resources an app can reach. A sandboxed app may still access files a user explicitly selects, as well as resources permitted by its declared capabilities. Its own container is not a safe place to store files from that app’s perspective; the app can access its container.

Sandboxing is not a blanket assurance that an AI agent cannot see sensitive information. Its real boundary depends on the app’s configuration and the grants made by the user. Apple’s documentation for App Sandbox and accessing files from the macOS app sandbox explains the relevant model. Do not assume that an app is sandboxed—or that its sandbox is configured narrowly—without checking information about that specific app.
Why avoid Full Disk Access?
Full Disk Access is a broad permission, so an agent should not receive it merely because it makes setup simpler. Apple states: “Your app can’t automatically gain full disk access through an entitlement or with code: the person using your app must choose to grant access in System Settings > Privacy & Security.” In other words, the user has to approve it. See Apple’s documentation on file access and sandboxing.

Before approving, ask whether the task can be done with selected files or a limited folder instead. If you do grant broad access, review it afterward in System Settings > Privacy & Security and turn it off when it is no longer needed. The exact list and presentation of permissions may vary across macOS releases.

No. FileVault encrypts the startup volume to protect data at rest, including if the storage device is removed and accessed without valid login credentials or a recovery key. It is not a runtime permission boundary: while you are logged in, an authorized app may be able to read files your account can access. Apple describes FileVault’s protection in its FileVault support documentation.

Use FileVault for protection against offline access to the Mac’s storage. For limiting an agent while you are using the Mac, narrow the files it can access and review its macOS permissions.
What about App Store apps and Gatekeeper?
Gatekeeper helps macOS assess whether downloaded software is from an identified developer and prompts for approval when opening downloaded software. Apps distributed through the Mac App Store are sandboxed, but that does not make permission review unnecessary: check which capabilities and privacy permissions an app requests, and grant only what its task requires. Apple describes Gatekeeper and protections for downloaded apps and the App Sandbox.

These distribution and launch checks answer a different question from access scope. They do not establish what a particular AI agent can read, whether it sends data to a service, or how its vendor processes files. Those details require app-specific evidence, such as current privacy documentation and information about the app’s signing, sandbox status, and permissions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat not to rely on as a file-access boundary
- Instructions in a chat: Telling an agent not to open a file is not the same as macOS denying the app access to it.
- A hidden folder: Hiding a folder does not replace an operating-system permission boundary.
- “Local AI” by itself: A claim that processing is local does not establish which files the app can access. Check permissions and the app’s current privacy information.
- FileVault during an active session: Encryption at rest does not stop an authorized, running app from reading files available to your account.
Apple’s announced Full Disk Access changes
Apple Developer News has announced plans for additional controls intended to require an explicit action when someone grants Full Disk Access. That is an announced direction, not a basis for assuming a particular control is already present in your macOS release. Use the permissions currently shown in System Settings > Privacy & Security when reviewing access. See Apple’s Full Disk Access update announcement.
