There is no risk-free way to protect savings from currency devaluation. Start by matching money you will need soon to the currency of those expenses, then distinguish a falling exchange rate from rising domestic prices: they can happen together, but they are different risks. For longer-term savings, consider options based on the inflation index, currency exposure, liquidity, and potential losses—not on a promise that any asset will preserve your purchasing power.
First, identify which loss you are trying to limit
Currency depreciation means your currency buys less of another currency. Inflation means it buys less in your own economy. The two can be related, but one is not a reliable measure of the other: a bond linked to a country’s consumer-price index does not automatically protect against a fall in that country’s exchange rate.

Your savings can also lose purchasing power without the balance falling. If interest on cash is below the rise in the prices you pay, the same nominal amount buys less over time. Investor.gov identifies inflation risk as the principal concern for cash equivalents over longer periods.

- If you are worried about domestic prices, check the inflation measure relevant to your spending and whether available securities are linked to it.
- If you are worried about the exchange rate, consider the currency of future bills and the risks of holding assets denominated in other currencies.
- If both matter, evaluate them separately. A product designed for one risk may not offset the other.
Keep near-term spending accessible
Cash and bank deposits can be useful for bills due soon and emergencies because they are accessible and their value does not fluctuate like a traded investment’s market price. Their trade-off is that their purchasing power can erode when interest falls short of inflation. Investor.gov describes cash and cash equivalents as the safest of its three broad asset categories, while noting that they generally offer the lowest return and carry inflation risk.

Keep an amount suited to your near-term obligations rather than moving every reserve into a volatile investment in search of a higher return. For deposits, check the account’s currency, withdrawal conditions, institution eligibility, fees, and the limits and conditions of your local deposit-insurance scheme. Deposit insurance applies to covered bank failure under the relevant rules; it does not reimburse inflation losses or adverse exchange-rate movements.
Compare inflation-linked government securities where available
Some governments issue securities whose principal or interest is linked to an inflation index. These can help address inflation measured by that index, but their terms, availability, taxation, and protection differ by country. The following examples are specific to the United States and should not be assumed to exist on the same terms elsewhere.

| Feature | U.S. Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities (TIPS) | U.S. Series I savings bonds |
|---|---|---|
| Inflation measure | Principal is indexed to U.S. CPI-U, not an individual household’s spending basket or a foreign currency. (U.S. TreasuryDirect) | The inflation component is recalculated every six months using CPI-U. (U.S. TreasuryDirect) |
| How the return is structured | A fixed coupon is paid on inflation-adjusted principal, so payment amounts can vary. Principal can rise with inflation and fall with deflation during the term. At maturity, the holder receives the inflation-adjusted principal or original principal, whichever is greater. (U.S. TreasuryDirect) | The composite rate combines a fixed rate, which stays with the bond for its life, and an inflation rate that resets every six months. The combined rate can rise or fall. (U.S. TreasuryDirect) |
| Access and price risk | Marketable; can be sold before maturity, but the market price can fluctuate and an early sale may return less than expected. (U.S. TreasuryDirect) | Non-marketable and subject to purchase and access rules. Check current redemption terms before buying. (U.S. TreasuryDirect) |
| Purchase limit | Not stated in the cited TreasuryDirect comparison. | The TreasuryDirect comparison, accessed in 2026, lists a limit of $10,000 per Social Security number per calendar year. Verify the current limit and eligibility before purchase. |
TreasuryDirect explains the TIPS maturity adjustment this way: “When the principal of a TIPS increases, you get the increased amount when the TIPS matures.” That does not mean the price is protected if you sell earlier, or that the CPI-U index will match your personal costs. I bonds also use CPI-U, but their non-marketable status makes their access different from TIPS. Compare index, holding period, redemption rules, taxes, fees, and the currency of the expense the money is meant to fund.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteUse foreign-currency holdings only for a defined purpose
A deposit in another currency may make sense when it matches a known expense in that currency, such as a planned payment abroad. Holding it can reduce the need to convert immediately before the bill is due. It is not a guaranteed refuge: that currency can also depreciate, and converting may involve spreads and account fees. Access restrictions, bank solvency, and government-imposed currency controls can also matter.

Deposit protection is jurisdiction-specific. In the United States, FDIC guidance says eligible foreign-currency-denominated deposits at insured institutions can qualify under its rules, with coverage calculated in U.S. dollars using its conversion rules. That is not a statement about deposits in other countries or every account, and it does not insure against exchange-rate losses. Check the applicable deposit insurer and the institution’s status in your own jurisdiction.
Diversify longer-term investments without treating diversification as insurance
For money you do not need soon, a diversified mix of investments may reduce reliance on one issuer, asset type, or market. SEC investor education discusses stocks, bonds, mutual funds, and exchange-traded funds as common investment categories, and says allocation should reflect time horizon and risk tolerance. Diversification can reduce concentration risk, but it cannot assure gains or prevent losses.

International investments can add exposure to different markets, but exchange-rate changes can increase or reduce returns. The SEC also warns that some jurisdictions impose currency controls that can restrict or delay transfers out of the country. An international fund is not the same thing as a foreign-currency bank balance: the holdings, legal protections, liquidity, and factors affecting value differ. Before investing, review what a fund owns, its costs, domicile, tax treatment, and currency exposure.
Approach real assets and commodities cautiously
Gold, property, and commodities are sometimes considered when investors worry about money losing value, but none is a guaranteed hedge against a particular currency’s decline. Their prices can be volatile and they may add storage, transaction, maintenance, liquidity, or concentration risks. There is no evidence-based fixed allocation that can be prescribed for these assets across currencies and circumstances.

Make the decision in this order
- List major expenses. Write down each expense’s currency and due date. Keep money for imminent obligations accessible in the currency in which those bills must be paid.
- Name the risk. Decide whether the concern is domestic inflation, exchange-rate depreciation, or both. Identify the relevant local price index and currency rather than assuming one measure covers both.
- Check local rules. Confirm deposit-insurance limits, eligible account types and institutions, withdrawal terms, taxes, and any restrictions on converting or transferring currency. Consult your country’s treasury, central bank, deposit insurer, and tax authority for local rules.
- Compare inflation-linked products. Where available, check the index used, maturity or redemption timing, early-sale or access rules, fees, tax treatment, and the currency in which the investment pays.
- Set a long-term approach you can sustain. For longer-horizon money, weigh diversification, costs, time horizon, and your ability to tolerate losses. Rebalance to a deliberate plan rather than reacting to currency headlines.
- Reject promises of certainty. Be wary of guaranteed real returns, crisis-timing claims, concentrated bets, unregulated solicitations, and leverage marketed as protection.
The U.S. examples above are governed by U.S. rules; local products, eligibility, deposit guarantees, tax treatment, and transfer restrictions vary. This is general information, not individualized financial or tax advice.
