Ask before recording people, stop if anyone objects, and avoid using smart glasses in places where people reasonably expect privacy. Do not assume the status light tells bystanders about every camera use: on some newer Ray-Ban Meta models, camera-based AI features can use the camera without activating the light used for saved photos and videos.
What people can—and cannot—tell from the indicator
On Ray-Ban Meta glasses, Meta describes a white capture LED that blinks when a photo or video is captured for the glasses’ gallery. Meta says the light cannot be switched off for gallery capture. It also says second-generation glasses disable the camera if the LED is detected as blocked, with additional measures intended to detect physical tampering or destruction. These are the company’s descriptions of product safeguards, not an independent guarantee that everyone nearby will notice a capture. Meta’s July 2026 explanation of the indicator.

Gallery capture is not the only camera use. Ray-Ban’s current UK FAQ says some camera-based AI features on newer models—for example, asking the glasses to identify a landmark or plant—may use the camera without turning on that same LED. The FAQ says first-generation Ray-Ban Meta glasses still turn on the light for some of these features because of hardware limitations. Feature and indicator behavior therefore depends on the model generation and what the glasses are doing; do not use the LED as a complete account of camera or AI activity. Ray-Ban UK’s FAQ.
The Irish Data Protection Commission’s 2024 annual report describes changes Meta made after engagement concerning notice to people appearing in captured media: the outward-facing LED was enlarged to more than twice its earlier size, a blinking pattern was added during recording, and controls and anti-tampering measures were introduced. That is a reported design change, not evidence that bystanders reliably notice the light. Irish Data Protection Commission annual reports.

How to use smart glasses considerately
Before taking a photo or recording
- Tell people what the glasses can do when it is relevant, and ask before photographing or recording people in a conversation or gathering.
- Do not treat a visible indicator as a substitute for asking. Meta’s wearer guidance advises asking permission, respecting people’s preferences, stopping if someone objects, and avoiding sensitive locations or places where people expect privacy. Meta’s responsible-use guidance.
- Leave recording off in places such as changing rooms, medical settings, private homes, schools, and workplaces unless you have clear permission and a valid reason. If you are unsure whether the camera or assistant is active during a sensitive conversation, turn the glasses off or remove them.
Before entering a controlled venue
Check the venue’s rules separately from the law. Cinemas, performances, workplaces, and other controlled spaces may restrict smart glasses even where general public-space rules allow their use. Restrictions and proposals can change: an Associated Press report from October 2026 described cinema and retailer responses as well as proposed or developing measures in different jurisdictions. Check the current policy of the specific venue rather than assuming a rule applies everywhere. Associated Press reporting on smart-glasses restrictions.
Before transferring or sharing media
Meta says ordinary gallery photos and videos remain on the glasses until the wearer chooses to transfer them through the companion app; after import, they are stored in the phone’s gallery. Sharing is a separate action. Check who appears in a clip and whether it reveals sensitive information before posting or sending it, and get permission where appropriate. These gallery details should not be generalized to every AI request or every model: Meta and Ray-Ban provide separate model- and feature-specific information about AI data handling. Check the model and its settings
- Identify the generation. Find the glasses’ model information in the companion app or product documentation. Ray-Ban’s FAQ distinguishes first-generation indicator behavior from newer models.
- Review privacy and AI controls. In the companion app, inspect the current privacy and AI settings for the linked glasses. Labels and options can change with app and software updates, so use the controls shown for your device rather than relying on instructions for another generation.
- Match the setting to the use. A saved photo or video, a livestream, and a camera-based AI request are different activities; do not assume they have identical indicators or data handling.
- When uncertain, stop the camera use. Turn the glasses off or remove them before a private conversation or in a sensitive setting.
Do not cover, disable, or modify the capture LED. Meta says blocking it disables the camera on second-generation devices and describes additional tamper-detection measures. Defeating an indicator also removes a notice safeguard for people nearby. Meta’s July 2026 explanation.

Public use, privacy, and the law
There is no single rule that makes recording people in public always legal or always illegal. A UK government response says people may lawfully use smart glasses in public spaces in line with freedom of expression, but also notes that recording someone without consent to cause alarm or distress or for sexual gratification may constitute offences such as harassment, stalking, or voyeurism. It says sharing intimate images without consent is also criminal. This is UK-specific guidance, not a rule for other countries or a substitute for advice on a particular situation. Other jurisdictions may take a different approach, and legal proposals are not the same as enacted law. For example, AP reported in October 2026 that Norway’s government was proposing a temporary ban in some places and that California’s governor had vetoed a bill addressing certain unauthorized recordings. Those developments do not establish what is legal where you are now. Check current local law and the specific venue’s terms before recording.
Regulatory scrutiny also needs careful attribution. The Texas Attorney General announced an investigation and alleged that Meta’s policy describes an “always enabled” mode for processing video for Meta AI. That announcement is an allegation in an investigation, not a final regulatory finding. Texas Attorney General’s investigation announcement.
