No. HDR10 is the baseline HDR format for 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, so Dolby Vision or HDR10+ support is not required to play HDR discs. Those formats add dynamic metadata, but you only see that enhancement when the disc, player, TV, and any device carrying the video signal all support the same format.
What changes between HDR10, Dolby Vision, and HDR10+?
| Format | Metadata | What it means for UHD Blu-ray |
|---|---|---|
| HDR10 | Static metadata | Baseline HDR format. Dolby’s UHD Blu-ray authoring guide says Dolby Vision Profile 7 discs include an HDR10-compatible base layer. |
| Dolby Vision | Dynamic metadata | On UHD Blu-ray, Profile 7 uses a dual-layer design: an HDR10 base layer plus an enhancement layer containing Dolby Vision data. |
| HDR10+ | Dynamic metadata | Metadata can provide scene-by-scene or frame-by-frame instructions for brightness, contrast, and color. HDR10-only devices can play HDR10+ content as HDR10. |
Dynamic metadata lets a compatible system adjust tone-mapping instructions across a film or scene rather than relying only on static metadata. It does not guarantee that every release will look better on every television: mastering, display capabilities, and device processing also affect the image. The cited format documentation does not establish a universal picture-quality winner.

Will a 4K Blu-ray play without Dolby Vision or HDR10+?
Usually, yes, when the disc and equipment support the relevant HDR10 fallback. Dolby’s UHD Blu-ray Authoring Workflow Guide explains that a Dolby Vision Profile 7 disc’s HDR10-compatible base layer allows non-Dolby Vision HDR10 decoders to play the signal in HDR10. HDR10+ Technologies likewise says an HDR10-only device can play an HDR10+ signal in HDR10.
In that situation, the system does not display the Dolby Vision or HDR10+ dynamic-metadata layer; it uses HDR10 instead. Confirm the exact disc and device behavior in their specifications rather than assuming every combination handles output identically.

What needs to support the format?
Dolby Vision or HDR10+ playback depends on a complete compatible video chain. Check each part, not just the player’s logo list:
- Disc: The particular release must include the format you want.
- Player: The player must support that format and be configured to output it.
- TV: The television must support the same format to display it.
- AV receiver or soundbar: If video passes through one, it must support the format and pass it through correctly.
- HDMI connection: The input, cable, and connection must meet the requirements of the devices in the chain.
A Dolby Vision-capable player cannot make a non-Dolby Vision television display Dolby Vision. If you suspect an AVR or soundbar is blocking the signal, connecting the player directly to the TV can help isolate the issue.

How to decide whether you need both formats
If you already own a player and HDR TV
Check the exact model specifications and the format listed for the disc you plan to watch. If the system lacks the disc’s dynamic format, HDR10 may still provide HDR playback through the format’s fallback behavior. You do not need to replace working equipment just to play UHD Blu-ray.
If you are buying a player
Choose based on the formats supported by your TV and the discs you intend to watch. If you specifically want both Dolby Vision and HDR10+, verify that the manufacturer lists both for the exact regional model and firmware. TechRadar’s 2025 4K Blu-ray player guide names the Panasonic DP-UB820 as a dual-format option; check Panasonic’s current official specifications, model suffix, firmware, and availability before buying.

- Confirm the disc and player both support Dolby Vision.
- Check that the TV supports Dolby Vision and that the AVR or soundbar, if used in the video path, is compatible.
- Use an appropriate HDMI input and connection. For the UBP-X800M2 setup, Sony specifies an 18 Gbps-compatible HDMI cable.
- Check the player’s Dolby Vision output setting. Sony’s UBP-X800M2 instructions say Dolby Vision output is off by default; with that setting off, Dolby Vision content is output as HDR10. The setting and default can differ on other models.
- If the receiver or soundbar may be interrupting the signal, connect the player directly to the TV to test the path.
Sony’s UBP-X800M2 Dolby Vision setup instructions also say that Dolby Vision content is output as HDR10 when connected to an HDR TV without Dolby Vision. Follow the instructions for your own player and display, since these details are model-specific.
