Treat the agent as a separate service receiving personal information—not as a private extension of yourself. For highly sensitive or consequential forms, filling them out yourself may be the safer choice.
Is it safe to let an AI agent fill out a form?
There is no universal yes or no. Risk depends on the form, the agent’s permissions, and the provider’s data practices. A routine form with a few required details presents a different decision from one containing financial, health, identity, or other sensitive information.

NIST’s National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence says weak identity, authorization, and governance for agents can create risks including data leaks, compliance failures, prompt injection, and unpredictable behavior. For identity-proofing contexts, NIST also cautions that information that seems ordinary on its own can become identifying when combined or processed by AI and machine-learning systems. That is a useful reason to avoid giving an agent extra details just because they seem harmless individually. See NIST’s identity-proofing privacy requirements.

When to fill out the form yourself
Consider completing a form personally if it requests highly sensitive information, could have significant legal or financial consequences, or requires judgment about what to disclose. This is a risk-based choice, not a claim that every such form is unsafe to use with an agent.
Check what the provider does with your information
Before entering personal data, look for clear answers in the provider’s privacy notice and settings. Check whether it stores prompts, form contents, screenshots, or browser activity; uses inputs to train or improve models; shares information with service providers or subprocessors; and offers a way to delete stored data. Also check whether those controls apply to your account, region, and the specific agent feature you plan to use.

The FTC says AI companies must honor their privacy and confidentiality commitments, including promises about use of customer data for training or updates. It emphasizes clear notice and affirmative consent when data is retained or used for other purposes. The FTC’s January 2024 staff post states, “There is no AI exemption from the laws on the books.” This is U.S. regulator guidance, not individualized legal advice. Read the FTC guidance.
If you cannot tell what is retained, how it may be used, or how to request deletion, do not assume the information is private. Either avoid using the agent for that form or leave out personal details until you can verify the provider’s practices.

Limit the information and access the agent gets
Share only what the form requires
Enter required information, but omit optional fields when they are not needed. Keep unrelated personal details out of the agent’s prompt, and do not upload extra documents “just in case.” NIST’s work on agent authorization and privacy risk supports this least-information approach; it is a practical precaution, not a guarantee that data will not be retained.
Restrict connected tools and permissions
Give the agent access only to what the task needs. If it can operate without access to email, cloud drives, contacts, saved credentials, or unrelated browser tabs, do not grant those permissions. Avoid broad or persistent access when a narrower, temporary permission will do. Exact controls vary by service, so check the agent’s permission screen before starting.

Do not let page instructions expand the task
Webpage text is not automatically trustworthy. If a form or page unexpectedly tells the agent to disclose additional information, change recipients, or override your instructions, stop and inspect it yourself. NIST identifies prompt injection and unpredictable autonomous behavior as risks to address; instructions encountered on a page should not authorize sharing beyond the task you chose. NIST’s project hub discusses these agent risks.

Where possible, keep the agent from submitting automatically. Check the completed form yourself, including fields that look routine and any choices that authorize sharing or action.

- Names, addresses, dates, and account numbers
- Uploaded files and attachments
- Checkboxes, consent choices, and preselected options
- The recipient, destination, and website domain
- Any field the agent filled from a saved profile or another source
Correct mistakes and remove information that is not needed. If the agent has changed the task, added unexpected data, or selected a consent option you did not authorize, do not submit until you understand and fix the change. NIST’s project highlights authorization, auditing, and prompt-injection mitigation as agent-security concerns; reviewing the form before submission is a practical user safeguard, not a quoted NIST requirement. Close out access when you finish
End the session and revoke temporary permissions if the service provides those controls. Closing a tab or session is not proof that the provider deleted prompts, screenshots, or other records from its systems; use the provider’s deletion controls or instructions if you want to request removal.
