1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTo protect painted or clear-coated wheels, clean them regularly only when cool, use a wheel cleaner explicitly approved for that finish, loosen stubborn deposits gently with a soft non-abrasive tool, and rinse thoroughly. Avoid abrasive tools, harsh or incompatible chemicals, and aggressive brushing: Ford warns that heavy-duty cleaners combined with brush agitation can wear away clear coat over time. Check your vehicle or wheel maker’s instructions, because approved products and cleaning guidance vary by model and finish.
Start with the wheel’s finish and care instructions
Confirm that the wheel is painted or clear-coated and check the vehicle or wheel maker’s current care instructions before choosing a cleaner. Product labels may distinguish factory-painted or clear-coated wheels from other finishes, so do not assume a product is suitable just because it is marketed as a wheel cleaner. Ford’s online manual is vehicle-specific, and its cleaning advice may not apply to every wheel or model: Ford owner information.

Use the cleaner only if its label explicitly permits use on your wheel’s finish, and follow the label’s application, dwell-time, and rinse directions. Meguiar’s identifies D143 non-acid cleaner for factory-painted and clear-coated wheels; the company describes its Ultimate All Wheel Cleaner as acid-free and pH-balanced. These are examples of product claims, not a comparative recommendation or a finding that one product works better than another: Meguiar’s D143 product information and Meguiar’s Ultimate All Wheel Cleaner.

- Wait until the wheels are cool. Do not apply cleaner to warm or hot wheels. Hyundai’s 2025 owner’s manual advises cleaning cooled wheels; consult the manual for your vehicle’s specific guidance: Hyundai manuals and warranties.
- Apply a compatible cleaner as directed. Use only the amount and dwell time stated on its label. Do not let an unapproved product sit on the finish.
- Loosen remaining deposits gently. If grime remains, use a soft sponge or other suitable non-abrasive tool with light pressure. Ford recommends a soft sponge for accumulated deposits in its cited owner guidance.
- Rinse thoroughly. Remove cleaner and loosened dirt according to the product directions; do not leave residue behind.
Avoid abrasive cleaners, wire or steel brushes, and acids or alkaline detergents unless the wheel maker and product label explicitly approve them for the specific finish. Hyundai advises mild soap or neutral detergent and cautions against abrasive tools and acid or alkaline cleaners. Ford warns: “Industrial-strength (heavy-duty) cleaners, or cleaning chemicals, in combination with brush agitation to remove brake dust and dirt, could wear away the clear coat finish over a period of time.” Ford owner information.
#1 Best Overall
- Maximum Gloss and Shine – Get a deep, mirror-like shine that instantly enhances the look of your wheels. Use it as a standalone wheel sealant, or apply it over your existing ceramic coating to boost both shine and performance.
- Repels Brake Dust – Cerakote's true ceramic formula creates an ultra-slick, extremely durable barrier that repels brake dust and helps prevent buildup, keeping your wheels looking cleaner between washes.
- Effortless Cleaning – Whether you have painted, powder coated, polished, or chrome wheels, Cerakote creates an extremely hydrophobic surface that repels water, road grime, and other contaminants. This keeps your wheels looking cleaner longer and makes cleaning your wheels even easier.
- Quick and Easy Application – One simple application is all you need to get professional-level results that last. Simply spray it on, buff it off, and enjoy the difference with minimal effort.
Set a cleaning schedule from your vehicle’s guidance
Follow the schedule in the manual for your vehicle and driving conditions rather than assuming one interval suits every wheel. Ford recommends weekly cleaning in the cited manual; Hyundai emphasizes that wheels should be cooled before cleaning. These are vehicle-specific instructions, not a universal rule for all cars or finishes. If brake dust and road grime build up sooner, clean using the same finish-safe method rather than reaching for a harsher chemical or more forceful brush.
Consider wax or sealant only if it is compatible
Wax or polymer sealant can be an optional additional protection layer if the wheel maker permits it and the product directions identify the finish as compatible. Cragar’s 2025 wheel-care guide lists wax or polymer sealant as a protection option: Cragar wheel-care guide. The guidance reviewed does not establish a universally best product, a measured protection benefit, or a reliable application interval, so use the instructions for the particular wheel and product rather than assuming a coating will prevent brake dust or grime.

How to choose between wheel cleaners
Compare products on the details that affect safe use, not on broad claims alone:
Recommended Free Tools
- Finish compatibility: Does the label explicitly name painted or clear-coated wheels?
- Chemistry and restrictions: Is it non-acid or otherwise described as suitable, and are any finishes excluded?
- Agitation: Can the product loosen deposits with rinsing, or does the label call for a tool? If a tool is needed, use a soft, non-abrasive one.
- Directions: What are the required application method, dwell time, and rinse steps?
For any optional wax or sealant, check wheel-maker approval and the product’s compatibility instructions as well. The manufacturer descriptions cited here do not establish that one cleaner or protection product outperforms another.
