IINA is the best first alternative to VLC for most Mac users who want a player designed around macOS. It combines an mpv playback engine with Mac-oriented controls and features such as Picture in Picture. If you need a player for an older Mac, VLC may still be the better fit; if you mainly want to cast local video to a TV, investigate Elmedia and verify its current compatibility and plan limits.
How to choose a VLC alternative on Mac
Start with what “streaming” means in your setup. Playing an online stream inside an app is different from casting a video file on your Mac to a television. Also check your macOS version before choosing: a player’s features do not help if your Mac cannot run the available release.

- For a Mac-oriented interface and flexible playback: start with IINA.
- For an older Mac or broad format and protocol support: VLC remains a practical option.
- For sending local video to a TV: investigate Elmedia, but confirm current device support and which features require payment.
IINA: the best default VLC alternative for most Mac users
IINA is a free, open-source macOS player built on mpv. Its project emphasizes Mac integrations, including trackpad gestures, media controls, and Picture in Picture, while also offering customizable controls and configuration. The project’s official site lists version 1.5.0 and requires macOS 12.0 or later, with macOS 11.0 listed for Intel Macs. Check the official IINA site for the current download and compatibility details.
The project also documents subtitle search, playlists, chapters, filters, mpv scripts and configuration, a command-line tool, and browser extensions. Its source code is available on GitHub. IINA is free and open source under GPLv3; the project says it does not include tracking or telemetry.

Online streams, subtitles, and casting in IINA
IINA’s project lists an Online Media plugin for enhancing online streaming and downloading, as well as an OpenSubtitles plugin for subtitle search and downloads. These are plugin-based capabilities, so check the project’s current plugin information and instructions for the workflow you need.
A community-maintained AirPlay plugin can cast the current file to Apple TV while IINA remains the remote. That is not the same as built-in, universal casting support: confirm that the plugin and your target device support your intended setup before relying on it.

Watch for a separate paid App Store listing
The free, open-source project at iina.io and GitHub should not be confused with a paid App Store listing using the IINA name. A purchase requirement shown on that listing does not mean the official project has become paid.

VLC: still useful for older Macs and broad compatibility
VLC remains a reasonable choice if you value broad playback support, streaming protocols, or compatibility with an older Mac. VideoLAN describes VLC as free and open source, able to play most multimedia files as well as DVDs, Audio CDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols. Its Mac download page lists VLC 3.0.24 as a universal 95 MB package, with separate Intel and Apple Silicon downloads.

VideoLAN lists Mac OS X 10.7.5 or later for the current line and directs users of earlier operating systems to older releases; it notes that support has ended for the listed legacy releases. This is a different compatibility floor from IINA’s, and an older release may not receive updates. Check VideoLAN’s Mac download page for the current release and your Mac’s architecture.

A vendor-affiliated comparison updated October 21, 2025 describes Elmedia as supporting AirPlay, Chromecast, and DLNA, with some advanced features requiring its Pro tier. These claims are a starting point, not an independent test or a guarantee of compatibility with every TV or streaming device.
