How to Protect Electronics From Theft, Damage, and Airport Security Checks

Pack valuable electronics in your carry-on, keep spare batteries and power banks in the cabin, and check watt-hour limits and checkpoint instructions before flying.

Keep laptops, phones, tablets, cameras, power banks, and spare lithium batteries in your cabin baggage whenever practical. That reduces handling and keeps valuable devices with you; it also aligns with U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and Transportation Security Administration (TSA) guidance. The rules differ by item: spare batteries and power banks must stay in the cabin, while a device with its battery installed may go in checked baggage only under specific conditions. Screening procedures vary by checkpoint, so follow the instructions you receive rather than assuming every laptop must come out of its bag.

Before you pack: a quick airport checklist

  1. Check each battery’s watt-hour (Wh) rating. Look on the battery label or in the manufacturer’s specifications, then check your airline’s current rules and destination requirements. Larger batteries may need carrier approval, and airline or international rules can be stricter than the FAA guidance summarized below. See the FAA’s passenger battery guidance.
  2. Put valuable or fragile electronics in your carry-on. TSA recommends carrying expensive and fragile electronics in carry-on baggage. A padded sleeve can be a practical extra cushion inside the bag, but it is not an official requirement or a tested guarantee against damage. See TSA’s electronics guidance.
  3. Pack loose batteries and power banks in your carry-on. Protect their terminals from short circuits and keep them from being crushed or otherwise damaged. If an overhead bag is taken for gate-checking, remove spare batteries and power banks and keep them with you in the cabin.
  4. Do not fly with a hazardous damaged battery. A damaged, defective, or recalled lithium battery or device may be prohibited from baggage if it presents a fire or overheating risk.
  5. Allow time for screening. Follow instructions at the checkpoint. An item may be subject to additional screening or refused, and the TSA officer makes the final decision.

Where should you pack a laptop, phone, tablet, or camera?

For valuable or fragile electronics, a carry-on is the sensible default. It keeps the device accessible and reduces the number of times it is handled outside your control. TSA specifically recommends carry-on packing for expensive and fragile electronics. For added cushioning, choose a sleeve that fits the device’s dimensions, closes securely, and fits inside your carry-on; this is practical packing advice, not a TSA or FAA requirement.

Keep devices within your personal control as you move through crowded areas and the checkpoint. This is ordinary caution, not a proven theft-prevention method. The available guidance does not establish that a tracker, cable lock, luggage lock, or anti-theft bag prevents airport theft, so do not treat any of them as a guarantee.

Do you have to take electronics out at airport security?

There is no universal removal instruction established for every checkpoint and screening setup. TSA says electronics can receive additional screening and that the officer at the checkpoint makes the final decision. Follow the current instructions where you are screened; do not unpack a laptop in advance on the assumption that every checkpoint requires it.

For U.S. travelers, TSA handles security screening, while the FAA’s passenger battery rules address aviation hazardous materials. These are separate roles. Requirements and screening procedures can differ outside the United States, so check the relevant airport, airline, and destination guidance when traveling internationally. The FAA’s PackSafe passenger hub distinguishes its hazardous-materials guidance from TSA prohibited-item and security guidance.

Can you put a power bank or spare battery in checked luggage?

No. Spare lithium batteries—including power banks—must be carried in cabin baggage, not checked baggage. Keep them protected from damage and prevent their terminals from contacting conductive items that could cause a short circuit. Manufacturer packaging or tape over exposed terminals are examples of protection described in FAA guidance.

FAA guidance gives this instruction because checked baggage is not an acceptable place for spare lithium batteries. See FAA guidance on lithium batteries in baggage.

How many watt-hours can you bring on a plane?

For U.S. passenger-aircraft guidance, the FAA lists these limits for rechargeable lithium batteries. Watt-hours (Wh) measure battery energy; check the printed rating or manufacturer information rather than estimating from a device’s size.

Battery rating FAA passenger guidance What to check
0–100 Wh Allowed Confirm the airline and destination do not impose stricter conditions.
101–160 Wh Airline approval required For spare lithium-ion batteries, no more than two in this range may be carried, and airline approval is required.
Above 160 Wh Not permitted on passenger aircraft Do not assume an exception; check with the airline if the rating or applicable category is unclear.

These are FAA passenger-guidance thresholds, not a promise that every airline or country accepts a battery under the same conditions. The airline may apply stricter requirements. The FAA’s current battery guidance for airline passengers is the place to verify the U.S. limits and approval conditions.

Can a laptop or other device go in checked baggage?

A device containing an installed lithium battery should travel in carry-on baggage when possible. FAA guidance permits it in checked baggage only if it is completely powered off—not asleep or in standby—and protected from damage and accidental activation. Carry-on remains the simpler choice for an expensive or fragile device and avoids relying on those checked-baggage conditions.
