How to Protect Electronics From Overheating During a Heat Wave

Protect electronics in a heat wave by avoiding direct sun and parked cars, checking each device’s temperature limits, and letting hot devices cool before use.

Keep electronics out of direct sunlight and parked cars, follow the temperature limits for each device, and ease off demanding tasks or charging when a device is already hot. If a phone displays a temperature warning, disconnect it from power if applicable, move it somewhere cooler, and let it cool before using it again.

Keep heat away from your devices

  • Move phones, tablets, laptops, and accessories out of direct sunlight. A sunny windowsill or car dashboard can become much hotter than the surrounding room.
  • Do not leave electronics in a parked car during hot weather. Apple warns that car temperatures can exceed iPhone and iPad storage limits and Mac operating limits. Google specifically warns against exposing Pixel 10 models to temperatures above 45°C (113°F), including on a car dashboard.
  • When indoors, choose a cooler spot away from windows, heating vents, and other heat sources.

Check the limits for your specific device

Operating limits and storage limits are different, and they vary by product. These are manufacturer specifications for the named product families, not universal limits for electronics.

Device family Ambient use range Storage range Source
iPhone and iPad 0°C to 35°C (32°F to 95°F) −20°C to 45°C (−4°F to 113°F) Apple Support
Mac laptops 10°C to 35°C (50°F to 95°F) −20°C to 45°C (−4°F to 113°F) Apple Support and Apple Batteries
Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, and Pixel 10 Pro XL The safety guide says not to expose the devices above 45°C (113°F); it does not state a normal ambient-use range. Not stated in the cited safety-guide passage. Google safety guide

For cameras, game consoles, TVs, routers, e-readers, power banks, and other devices, check the relevant manual or manufacturer support page rather than applying one of these ranges.

Reduce heat from use and charging

Intensive activity can warm a device, especially in already hot surroundings. Apple identifies processor- or graphics-intensive apps, camera use, high-quality video streaming, and GPS navigation in hot conditions as possible contributors to warmth or reduced performance. If a device is heating up, pause demanding tasks and let it cool.

Charging can add heat. Apple advises removing a case if an iPhone or iPad gets hot while charging because some case styles can generate excess heat. Apple also warns that charging in high ambient temperatures can further harm battery capacity; high ambient temperatures can permanently reduce battery capacity. Avoid charging a hot device in the sun or in a hot car.

For a Mac laptop, use a stable work surface that allows good ventilation. Keep vents unobstructed; a cooling pad or ventilated stand is optional, not a substitute for a cool environment and clear airflow.

Recognize when a device is protecting itself

Heat-related behavior can include slowed or paused charging, a dimmed or black display, reduced cellular signal, or reduced performance on iPhone and iPad. A Pixel may reduce performance or connectivity, stop charging, enter low-power mode, or turn off its display or the device. These are protective responses, but they are a cue to remove the heat source and let the device cool.

What to do if a phone shows a temperature warning

  1. Stop using the phone. Disconnect it from power if it is charging.
  2. Move it out of direct sunlight and into a cooler environment.
  3. Let it cool before using or charging it again. Follow any on-screen guidance and wait for the warning to clear.

Apple recommends turning off an iPhone or iPad that displays a temperature warning, moving it away from sunlight to a cooler environment, and allowing it to cool. Google similarly advises disconnecting an overly hot Pixel from power, moving it somewhere cooler, and not using it until it has cooled.

Ordinary warmth versus overheating

A device can feel warm during setup, backup restoration, software updates, wireless charging, intensive app use, or high-quality streaming. Apple says an iPhone or iPad without a temperature warning can continue to be used in the described circumstances. Treat a temperature warning or abnormal heat differently: stop use, remove the device from heat, and allow it to cool.
