How to Protect Carbon-Ceramic Brakes During Track Driving

A practical guide to protecting carbon-ceramic brakes on track: inspect the system, bed the right friction material, verify pad fitment, and follow the car maker’s procedures.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Protect carbon-ceramic brakes on track by following the exact car’s service and track-use instructions, checking the system before the event, bedding the friction material correctly, and using pads approved for that specific brake setup. Do not assume a generic cooldown, temperature target, fluid interval, or disc-replacement limit applies to every car: those details depend on the system and its manufacturer.

How do I protect carbon-ceramic brakes on track?

Start with the owner’s manual and any manufacturer track-use guidance for the exact car, model year, and brake option. Before driving, arrange a thorough brake inspection, confirm pad condition and brake-line condition, and verify that the pads and discs are a compatible combination. Bed new friction material using the procedure specified for the car and parts. During the event, pay attention to changes in braking or pedal feel; if a warning appears, the pedal feels abnormal, or damage is suspected, stop using the car and seek a qualified inspection.

These steps matter because carbon-ceramic is not a single interchangeable system. Road-car discs, pad compounds, cooling arrangements, and service procedures differ by vehicle. Ferrari North America’s 2018 guidance for noncompetitive track events says the brake system must be inspected thoroughly before track use and warns that incorrect bedding can damage friction material. It adds that, on carbon-ceramic discs, poor bedding can reduce braking performance and longevity. Those are Ferrari’s instructions for the scope stated in its document, not a universal service schedule for every make. Read Ferrari North America’s track-use guidelines.

What should I check before a track event?

Make the checks before the car reaches the circuit, while there is time to resolve a problem with the correct parts or workshop procedure. A quick visual look is not a substitute for the inspection criteria specified by the manufacturer. If you do not have the equipment or expertise to assess the brake system, ask an authorized dealer or a brake specialist familiar with the exact vehicle.

Confirm the rules and the car’s instructions

  • Check the owner’s manual and manufacturer track-use guidance for restrictions, maintenance requirements, and the correct inspection procedure for the fitted brakes.
  • Read the event’s technical and safety rules. An event may impose requirements beyond ordinary road use; do not assume that a car suitable for the road automatically meets every event’s rules.
  • Identify the actual brake option on the car. A model name alone may not establish which disc and pad specification is fitted.
  • Ask a qualified technician to use the model-specific service procedure when wear, damage, or replacement is in question. Do not substitute a generic measurement or visual judgment for the manufacturer’s criteria.

Inspect the friction material and brake lines

Ferrari North America’s 2018 noncompetitive-track guidance specifically calls for a thorough brake-system inspection that includes friction-material wear and brake lines. Make sure the inspection covers the pads and the rest of the system, not just the visible disc surface. A technician should assess the components using the correct procedure for that vehicle and brake option.

Do not infer that a disc is safe because it looks acceptable from the outside, or that a particular mark or wear level has the same meaning across different carbon-ceramic designs. The material supplied by Porsche and Brembo describes system features and broad usage context, but does not establish a cross-model inspection number or a general disc replacement threshold. Where wear or damage is suspected, get a model-specific assessment rather than deciding from a universal rule.

Verify the pad-and-disc combination

Check the exact vehicle, brake option, pad part, and installation procedure before ordering or fitting pads. Brembo says its carbon-ceramic pads are engineered for use with its carbon-ceramic discs and for specific car models. Porsche likewise describes the pads for its Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake system as specially developed for that system. These examples illustrate why a pad labeled “carbon-ceramic” is not, by itself, proof of fitment for your car.

Ask the parts supplier or qualified installer to confirm fitment against the vehicle identification and brake configuration, and to confirm the bedding instructions. Do not mix a generic pad with a carbon-ceramic disc on the assumption that the material category is enough. Brembo’s carbon-ceramic pad information describes its model-specific engineering; Porsche’s PCCB explanation describes its own system.

How should I bed carbon-ceramic brakes?

Use the bedding procedure specified by the vehicle maker or the manufacturer of the exact matched brake components. Bedding is not a generic sequence that can safely be supplied without knowing the car, pad, and disc. Ferrari’s track-use guidance says friction material must be bedded adequately and warns that incorrect bedding can damage it; for carbon-ceramic discs, Ferrari says that can lead to reduced braking performance and longevity.

Before the event, establish whether the fitted pads are new, whether they have already been bedded, and which instructions apply to them. If the parts supplier and vehicle maker provide different directions, do not improvise or combine steps: have the authorized service provider or brake specialist resolve which procedure applies to the exact setup.

  • Do not treat a bedding method found for another car or pad compound as applicable to yours.
  • Do not skip bedding because the car has carbon-ceramic discs; the cited Ferrari guidance explicitly includes friction-material bedding.
  • Do not invent speeds, braking repetitions, temperatures, or cooldown periods. The correct procedure is system-specific.
  • If bedding is incomplete or you suspect it was done incorrectly, ask a qualified technician what inspection or corrective procedure the manufacturer allows before returning to track use.

Does brake fluid need attention before track driving?

Yes, but the correct timing and specification come from the car maker, not from a universal carbon-ceramic rule. Ferrari North America’s 2018 guidance for noncompetitive track events recommends changing brake fluid before track use and again at the end of the session. Ferrari explains that moisture can lower the fluid’s boiling point; vapor bubbles can be compressible, increasing pedal travel and reducing brake performance. Follow that schedule only where it applies to the vehicle and event in question.

For another make, consult its manual or track-use documentation for the required fluid, inspection method, and service interval. Do not assume Ferrari’s before-and-after-session instruction applies to every road car, or that carbon-ceramic discs determine the fluid interval. If the fluid history is unknown, ask a qualified technician to assess it under the correct vehicle procedure before the event. Ferrari’s guidance is available in its track-use document.

What should I watch for while driving?

Pay attention to warnings and changes in braking behavior rather than trying to diagnose disc condition by feel alone. Stop using the car if a brake warning appears, the pedal becomes abnormal, braking performance changes unexpectedly, or you suspect damage. Have the system inspected by a qualified technician before driving it again. This is prudent safety guidance, not a manufacturer-published universal failure threshold.

Do not rely on a single temperature reading or a generic “safe” number to decide whether the brakes can continue. The reviewed manufacturer material does not set one temperature target for all carbon-ceramic systems. It also does not establish a common driver response for every warning or symptom; follow the vehicle’s instructions and the event’s safety procedures.

Do carbon-ceramic brakes need to cool down after a session?

There is no universal cooldown routine established for all road-car carbon-ceramic brakes in the cited material. Porsche describes curved cooling channels in its PCCB design, and Brembo describes its discs as cooling rapidly after braking, but neither source sets a general time, route, speed, or temperature that every driver should use after a session.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Follow the exact vehicle’s instructions and the event’s procedures between sessions and after driving. Do not apply a cooldown routine from a different brake design as if it were approved for yours, and do not use an unverified temperature limit to decide when the car is ready to park or return to track. If braking behavior changes or damage is suspected, arrange an inspection instead of treating cooling as a fix.

Can I use track pads with carbon-ceramic brakes?

Only if the pad is approved or confirmed as compatible with the exact vehicle and carbon-ceramic brake system. “Track pad” describes intended use, not guaranteed compatibility. Carbon-ceramic pads may be engineered for a particular disc and model, so confirm the precise pad part number, brake option, and bedding method before purchase or installation.

Ask the vehicle manufacturer, an authorized dealer, or a brake specialist familiar with the system to verify the proposed combination. Confirm whether the pad is intended for the fitted discs and for the car’s road and track use. A generic pad marketed for performance or track driving should not be assumed to protect the disc or preserve system performance. If no vehicle-specific compatibility is established, do not fit it on the basis of the product category alone.

How long do carbon-ceramic brake discs last on track?

There is no single life expectancy that applies across cars, drivers, and circuit use. Brembo’s 10 September 2024 aftermarket article gives an approximate life of 150,000 km in road use and 2,000 km in extreme track use for its CCM discs, naming Ferrari Challenge as an example of extreme track use. Those are Brembo estimates for its product and stated contexts—not an interval for every manufacturer’s discs, every track event, or every driver. Actual replacement decisions need to follow the specific vehicle’s inspection criteria.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The scale of the difference in Brembo’s figures illustrates why road mileage is a poor stand-in for severe circuit use. It does not predict the life of a particular car’s discs. Use the manufacturer’s inspection procedure, keep track of the car’s service history, and ask a qualified technician to assess wear when the evidence is uncertain. Do not wait for a generic mileage figure, and do not treat the approximate 2,000 km extreme-use estimate as a guaranteed minimum or replacement threshold.

Claim What the source states How to interpret it
Brembo CCM disc life Approximately 150,000 km in road use and 2,000 km in extreme track use, in Brembo’s 10 September 2024 article. An approximate estimate for Brembo CCM discs in the stated contexts; not a universal life prediction or replacement limit.
Brembo CCM disc weight Brembo says CCM discs are 50% lighter than cast-iron discs. A manufacturer-stated comparison for its CCM product, not a claim that every vehicle saves the same amount of weight.
Porsche PCCB weight Porsche says its PCCB discs offer around 50% disc-weight saving and approximately 20 kg overall vehicle-weight saving, depending on model, compared with cast-iron brakes. Porsche’s system-specific comparison; the overall saving depends on the model.

The figures above are manufacturer statements, not results from an independent comparative study. Brembo’s 2024 discussion is at its CCM aftermarket article; Porsche’s system description is at its PCCB explanation.

Why road-car carbon-ceramic brakes are not the same as pure carbon racing brakes

Do not transfer assumptions about pure carbon racing discs to a road-car carbon-ceramic setup. Brembo distinguishes pure carbon racing discs—which require high temperature to work properly—from road-car ceramic composite material, developed to provide useful braking across varied conditions. That difference is one reason a racing brake procedure or target temperature should not be assumed to apply to a road car’s carbon-ceramic brakes.

The distinction does not remove the need for system-specific instructions. Road-car carbon-ceramic systems still require compatible friction material, appropriate inspection, and correct bedding. Brembo’s overview of the material distinction is in The Innovation of Carbon-Ceramic Discs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I keep tracking the car or change to another brake setup?

The evidence does not support a universal recommendation to keep or replace a carbon-ceramic setup for track use. Make the decision for the specific car, use, and budget with the vehicle maker or a qualified brake specialist. Compare the manufacturer’s approval for track use, compatibility of discs and pads, the demands of the event and your driving, inspection and replacement costs, expected wear under that use, and any road-use requirements.

Brembo’s estimate for extreme track wear shows that use can materially change disc life, but it does not determine whether a different setup is the right choice for an individual car. If considering a change, confirm that the replacement parts are approved for the vehicle and its intended use. Do not assume a different pad or disc combination is a protective upgrade unless compatibility and use are established for that exact system.

A practical pre-track and post-session checklist

Before the event

  1. Read the owner’s manual, track-use documentation, and event rules for the exact car and brake option.
  2. Arrange a thorough brake-system inspection using the manufacturer’s procedure, including pad wear and brake lines.
  3. Confirm that the pads and discs are the correct matched parts for the car; verify part numbers and fitment with a qualified source.
  4. Check whether the friction material needs bedding and follow the specified procedure rather than a generic routine.
  5. Check brake-fluid requirements and service history. Use the vehicle maker’s schedule; Ferrari’s before-track and end-of-session recommendation applies to its stated noncompetitive-event guidance.

Between sessions and after track use

  • Follow the vehicle and event instructions; do not substitute an invented cooldown time or temperature target.
  • Stop using the car if a warning, abnormal pedal feel, unexpected braking change, or suspected damage occurs, and arrange a qualified inspection.
  • If wear or damage is suspected after the event, have the system assessed by a technician using the correct model-specific criteria before deciding whether it is safe to use again.

For inspection limits, replacement decisions, fluid intervals, approved pads, and track restrictions, the controlling reference is the correct procedure for the individual vehicle—not a general rule shared across all carbon-ceramic brakes.
