Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Protect an Android banking app by keeping the phone and apps updated, leaving Google Play Protect on, installing the bank’s app only from a trusted official listing, reviewing powerful app permissions, and securing the phone with a strong screen lock. These layers reduce risk; no scanner or setting can guarantee that a device or bank account is safe.
1. Keep Google Play Protect enabled
Google Play Protect checks apps when they are installed and periodically scans apps already on the device. Google says it can warn about, disable, or remove apps it identifies as harmful, including apps installed from outside Google Play. It is a useful layer, not a guarantee that every new or targeted threat will be detected. See Google’s Play Protect guidance.
To check it, open Play Store → profile icon → Play Protect. Confirm that scanning is enabled, and run a scan if you have noticed something suspicious. The wording may vary by Android version and device.
Google reports that Play Protect scanned over 350 billion Android apps daily and that its real-time scanning identified more than 27 million new malicious applications from outside Google Play in 2025. These are Google-reported figures about its scanning operation; they do not show an individual user’s chance of infection or the share of banking malware caught. Google’s 2025 security reporting

2. Install the genuine bank app
Use the bank’s official website to reach its app-store listing if you are unsure which result is genuine. Check the publisher name before installing. Do not install an APK or follow an unexpected banking-app link sent by text, email, social media, or a caller. Be especially wary of messages urging you to install an “urgent security update” or turn off protections. Google recommends using trusted app sources. Google’s Android security guidance
3. Review sensitive permissions
Some permissions give an app broad access to device functions or information. Google’s developer guidance highlights SMS, notification-listener, and Accessibility access as high-risk when an app has no legitimate need for them. Malicious apps can misuse Accessibility access to control device actions or expose financial information. Google’s Play policy notes: “Common targets of phishing include banking credentials, credit card numbers, and online account credentials for social networks and games.” Google Play malware policy and permissions guidance

Review which apps have these permissions and revoke access that is unnecessary or has no clear purpose. Look in Settings for Accessibility, Notification access, SMS, and Device admin apps. Menu names and locations differ by Android version and manufacturer, so use Settings search if you cannot find a category. Do not grant a permission merely because an app asks for it.
4. Install Android and banking-app updates
Operating-system updates often include critical security fixes. Enable automatic updates where available, install Android security updates when offered, and update the banking app through its official store listing. The exact update path depends on the device; check Settings for System update or Software update, and use Google Play to update apps. The FTC explains why phone updates matter for security. If your phone no longer receives security updates, ask its manufacturer or carrier whether a supported update is available. A device that cannot receive fixes has fewer ways to address newly discovered vulnerabilities.
5. Secure the phone itself
- Set a strong PIN or password and enable automatic screen locking.
- Know how to locate, lock, or erase the phone if it goes missing.
- Never share your unlock code with callers or people claiming to be bank support.
These steps help limit what someone can do with a phone they can physically access. Google and the FTC provide further phone-security guidance. Google guidance for a lost Android device; FTC phone-security guidance; FBI fraud and safety guidance

6. Use public Wi-Fi with care
Advice on public Wi-Fi is not completely uniform. FBI best practices advise against public or unsecured Wi-Fi, while the FTC says public Wi-Fi is usually safe because encryption is now widespread and cautions that it can be hard to tell whether an app encrypts its connection. When convenient, use a trusted cellular connection for sensitive banking activity rather than relying on an unfamiliar network. FBI internet-fraud guidance; FTC guidance on public Wi-Fi
7. Decide whether you need another security app
Android already includes Play Protect. The official guidance cited here does not establish that every banking user needs paid antivirus software or identify one product as superior. If you consider an optional security app, check what malware and phishing protections its vendor actually documents, whether it supports your Android version, how it handles your data, and its price and renewal terms. Do not disable Play Protect just to install another scanner. Google Play Protect guidance
What to do if you suspect malware or account theft
- Stop using the suspect phone for sensitive logins. If you have a strong reason to suspect infection or see a suspicious transaction, do not continue signing in to banking or other sensitive accounts from that device.
- Contact the bank through a trusted route. Use a known official phone number or a separate trusted device, not contact details in a suspicious message or pop-up. Ask the bank to secure the account and review transactions, then follow its instructions.
- Change credentials from a clean, trusted device. Do not enter replacement passwords on the phone you suspect is compromised.
- Get device-specific help. Keep access to your bank through another trusted device while you seek help from the phone’s manufacturer or a qualified support provider. A factory reset may remove some infections, but it can erase data and does not by itself guarantee account security. Back up essential personal data and follow manufacturer guidance before resetting.
There is no single recovery sequence that fits every bank; the bank can advise on its own account protections and next steps. FTC phone-security guidance
Which Android features protect against financial-call scams?
Google’s 2026 verified financial-call protections were described as features developed with select financial institutions. Availability depends on participation, and these protections address call spoofing rather than malware generally. Do not treat them as a replacement for the app and device safeguards above.
