Choose a stereo pair if music listening matters and you can place separate speakers to the left and right of the TV. Choose a soundbar if you want a compact, consolidated TV-audio setup with fewer separate components. Neither option is a universal sound-quality winner: the right fit depends on your room, listening habits, equipment and connection requirements.
What separates a stereo pair from a soundbar?
A stereo pair places one speaker on each side of the TV and plays left and right channels from those distinct positions. That layout also suits two-channel music. Active speakers have amplification built in; passive speakers need an amplifier or receiver.

A soundbar gathers its speakers and, usually, amplification into one unit that sits near or below the screen. Some models add a subwoofer, surround speakers or upward-firing drivers, but those extras and their capabilities vary by model.
Which setup fits your priorities?
| Factor | Stereo speakers | Soundbar |
|---|---|---|
| Music and stereo material | Separate left and right positions suit two-channel playback. Active speakers can work with a TV if their inputs match its outputs. | Some models handle music well, but performance and features vary; the category alone does not predict results. |
| Space and placement | Needs room for speakers on both sides of the TV; stands may be necessary if the furniture cannot hold them. | A more compact, consolidated arrangement that can sit near or below the screen. |
| Amplification and components | Active speakers include amplification. Passive speakers require a suitable amplifier or receiver. | Usually combines speakers and amplification in the bar. A subwoofer or rear speakers add boxes and power needs. |
| Surround and height effects | A stereo pair alone is not a multichannel surround array. | Some models support surround or height effects, depending on the hardware, audio formats, source and placement. |
Check how the system will connect to your TV
Before buying, compare the TV’s audio outputs with the sound system’s inputs and check which audio formats both devices support. A connector’s presence does not guarantee that the equipment can pass or decode every format.

- HDMI ARC/eARC: Sends TV audio to a compatible soundbar or audio system over HDMI. eARC has greater capacity for advanced formats than ARC, but support varies by device. Check the specifications for the TV and audio system, not just the port label. Dolby’s connection guidance explains connecting an Atmos soundbar through a compatible ARC/eARC port.
- Optical: A possible alternative when both devices have optical ports. What Hi-Fi’s connection guide says optical can carry stereo and compressed Dolby Digital or DTS surround, but not lossless Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD Master Audio.
- RCA or 3.5 mm: These are options only when the specific TV and audio equipment provide matching connections. RCA can carry left and right channels to a stereo system.
- Bluetooth: Some TVs and speakers support it, but it is not universal. What Hi-Fi generally favors a wired connection for audio performance and synchronization; results depend on the particular devices and setup.
A passive stereo pair connects through its amplifier or receiver, so check how that component will receive audio from the TV. For any connection, confirm that the TV is set to output audio to the external system. HDMI CEC may allow the TV remote to control volume or power, but behavior depends on the devices and their implementation.
What to know about surround sound and Dolby Atmos
A two-speaker stereo layout and a soundbar with surround or height capabilities are different kinds of setups. A soundbar’s effects depend on its specific hardware, supported formats, source material and placement; connecting a soundbar over HDMI does not by itself guarantee Atmos playback. Check the TV, source, content and soundbar specifications, and select bitstream output where the equipment requires it. Dolby’s Bring Dolby Home FAQs provide setup guidance.

- Simplified 5.1ch Dolby Atmos Setup: Enjoy immersive 4D sound with real Dolby Atmos and 5.1-channel audio. Five built-in speakers, including two side-firing drivers, create wide surround without rear speakers. Precision DSP ensures <0.5 ms latency for smooth, theater-like sound. Setup takes less than 1 minute.
- Voice Clarity Enhancement: VoiceMX technology uses advanced DSP algorithms to isolate and enhance vocal frequencies in real time. Dialogue remains crisp and easy to follow by separating speech from background effects and music, even at low volumes or during intense scenes.
- 300W Output with 6-Driver System: Featuring five precision-tuned full-range drivers and a dedicated wired wooden subwoofer, the system delivers up to 300W of peak power for bold, room-filling sound. With a frequency response of 45 Hz–18 kHz and a maximum SPL of 99 dB, it reproduces everything from subtle nuances to explosive cinematic effects.
- 18 mm High-Excursion Driver: Powered by BassMX technology, the wired wooden subwoofer features a 18 mm high-excursion driver, a 5.3L tuned cabinet, and a high-density magnetic circuit. This design delivers deeper, tighter bass with greater air displacement and enhanced low-frequency performance—bringing more realism to every scene.
- HDMI eARC for True Dolby Atmos: HDMI eARC supports up to 37 Mbps of bandwidth, unlocking the full potential of lossless Dolby Atmos 5.1-channel audio. Compared to standard ARC, eARC delivers richer surround effects and greater detail. CEC integration allows the TV and soundbar to work together with unified control.
For a soundbar with upward-firing Atmos-enabled speakers, Dolby advises: “To get the best experience from your soundbar, place it so nothing is between the Dolby Atmos-enabled speakers and the ceiling.” A blocked ceiling path can interfere with the intended height effect.

Pick stereo speakers when…
- You can position one speaker on each side of the TV.
- Music and two-channel listening are central to the setup.
- You are willing to use an amplifier or receiver if your speakers are passive.
- Your TV and speakers, or TV and amplifier, share a compatible audio connection.
Pick a soundbar when…
- You want one compact unit rather than two speakers flanking the screen.
- You prefer a consolidated TV-audio system, with optional extra components only if needed.
- You have checked that the model supports the audio connections and formats you care about.
- You are considering surround or height effects and can meet the model’s placement requirements.
Also consider what you will connect beyond the TV: TV apps, a phone, a turntable or another source. Do not assume a system supports a particular streaming method or input simply because it is a soundbar or a stereo pair; check the model’s specifications.

Buying and setup checklist
- List the TV’s audio outputs. Check its manual or specifications for HDMI ARC/eARC, optical, RCA or another output.
- Check the audio system’s inputs. Confirm that the intended soundbar, active speakers or amplifier has a matching input.
- Confirm format support end to end. If surround or Atmos matters, verify what the TV passes through and what the sound system decodes. Check the source and content as well.
- Work out amplification. Active speakers do not need a separate power amplifier; passive speakers need a suitable amplifier or receiver.
- Measure the available space. Ensure a stereo pair can sit on both sides of the TV, or that a bar fits near the screen. For upward-firing Atmos hardware, keep the path to the ceiling unobstructed.
- Check control and synchronization. Verify remote volume and power behavior, input switching and any lip-sync adjustment for the exact models.
- Connect and select TV audio output. Use the supported wired connection where possible, then choose the external audio system in the TV’s audio settings. Follow the equipment manuals for ARC/eARC and format settings.
There is no universal sound-quality winner
The available category guidance supports practical differences in layout, components, connections and potential audio features, but it does not establish that stereo speakers or soundbars sound better in every living room. The choice turns on whether you can accommodate separate left and right speakers and prioritize music, or would rather have a compact, TV-focused system. Compare the exact products and their supported connections before deciding.
