Store an old painting indoors in a secure place with steady temperature and humidity, away from damp, heat, leaks, vibration, and accidental contact. Handle it as little as possible. Before moving or wrapping it, check the paint and frame: if paint is flaking, impasto is fragile, or the frame is loose or weak, ask a paintings conservator how to stabilize and protect it first.
Choose a stable storage space
Consistency matters more than trying to force every painting into one supposedly perfect setting. The Canadian Conservation Institute (CCI) says a stable relative humidity (RH) of 40–60% is safest for paintings on canvas or wood; it identifies 50% RH as a central value used to promote uniformity between lending institutions. Its acceptable temperature range is 16–25°C. These are general guidelines, not guarantees for every painting: its support, condition, previous environment, and the speed and severity of changes all affect risk. Avoid sudden or severe fluctuations. CCI Environmental Guidelines for Paintings; CCI Know Your Paintings.

Pick a clean, secure room with enough clear space to move the painting safely. A temperature-and-humidity monitor can help you observe room conditions, but it does not control them, and CCI does not endorse a particular consumer device. Keep cleaning supplies and workshop materials out of the storage area.

- Avoid damp or flood-prone basements: leaks, flooding, and humidity can put the work at risk.
- Keep paintings away from poorly insulated exterior walls, heating or cooling units, and vibration. Perimeter walls may be subject to temperature and humidity fluctuations.
- Restrict access and leave a practical route for moving the work without bumping it.

Select housing for the painting’s size and condition
There is no single wrapping or housing method suited to every painting. Consider whether it is framed, how stable its paint is, whether a cover could touch the surface, what protection it needs, and how much space it occupies. Canvas, wood panel, and other supports can respond differently to environmental changes, so the painting’s construction and condition matter.
| Situation | Possible protection | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Framed painting in stable condition | A protective backing board, where appropriate, can help shield the back. A sound frame can support and protect the work during handling and storage. | An original frame may be historically integral; do not assume it should be replaced or altered. |
| Unframed painting with exposed edges or a vulnerable surface | A handling-travel-storage (HTS) frame may provide a protective structure. | Its fit and use should suit the painting and its condition. |
| Smaller work needing enclosure | A custom container made from stable materials such as Coroplast or acid-free multi-ply matboard may be suitable. | Container design depends on the object; these materials are not a universal DIY prescription. |
| Work needing a barrier from dust, dirt, or water | CCI describes polyethylene or Mylar sheeting as protective options that retain visibility. An HTS frame may also be covered with polyethylene sheeting. | Wrapping can be unsuitable if it risks contact with fragile impasto or unstable paint. Do not place plastic against vulnerable paint without conservation advice. |
CCI recommends fitting a painting with a frame and protective backing board when appropriate. Its storage guidance discusses sheeting, containers, backing boards, and HTS frames; its framing guidance explains the role of frames. For valuable, fragile, or unusual work, consult a qualified paintings conservator or a conservation-supply specialist before building or applying protective housing.

Inspect before handling or moving it
CCI warns that “Most damage to paintings and their frames occurs during handling.” Before lifting, inspect the paint and frame for flaking, loose decorative elements, weak corners, tears, or other signs of instability. If the painting or frame cannot be handled safely, do not move it until a conservator or museum technician has stabilized it in place. See CCI Basic Handling of Paintings.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Plan first: clear the route and prepare the destination before lifting. Make sure there is enough help to support the painting safely.
- Hold the frame or a suitable support, not the painted surface. Do not press on the back of a canvas.
- Support the work evenly. When moving a painting horizontally from a crate, support its corners as advised by CCI.
- Avoid temperature extremes during transport. Keep the move as direct and controlled as practical.
Old paint and supports may be brittle or already damaged, making careful handling especially important.

Wrap only when the surface can tolerate it
Polyethylene sheeting or Mylar can help shield a painting from dust, dirt, and water while allowing it to remain visible. For paintings in transit or in uncontrolled storage, CCI recommends airtight, impermeable polyethylene wrap in relevant cases. The appropriate material and application depend on condition and acclimatization needs; that guidance does not make direct-contact wrapping safe for every surface. Fragile impasto and flaking or unstable paint can be damaged by contact, so do not wrap such a painting yourself without a conservator’s advice.
CCI’s care advice is available at Caring for Paintings. If a painting needs protection but its surface is vulnerable, use a structure that prevents contact rather than improvising a tight wrap.

Know when to call a conservator
Ask a paintings conservator for advice before moving or covering a work if you find flaking paint, fragile raised texture, a tear, loose frame elements, weak frame corners, or any other instability. The same applies when the painting is valuable, unusually constructed, or its condition is uncertain. A conservator can assess the support and paint, determine whether stabilization is needed, and advise on suitable housing. General storage guidance cannot replace an examination of an unstable object.
